Sacred Heart School Friday August 31st, 2018
Let’s Begin the Year with Confidence
Matt 19:26: “With God, all things are possible.” It is a new school year! Time to get back in the groove. It is so fun to see all of the excited kids jump into a new school year and
bring their A game. With a little help from Moms and Dads, who buy everything we need, get us on a routine and pack our
healthy lunch, the students are ready to roll. School is their job and they are good at it. I challenge you to stop by Sacred Heart
School any time and see if the kids are on top of their game. You will find them engaged in class discussion, working hard on
assignments and proudly explaining the finished product. I know, this may sound a bit exaggerated but Sacred Heart School
is special. The students from preschool to 6th grade are amazing kids and they are working every day to be the light of Christ.
Challenges are met with enthusiasm. Struggles and failures are explained as growth in virtue. School makes sense. A little
prayer, a little fun, a little more work and a lot of joy. That is God’s formula and we are blessed to be the people who can share
it. The goal is confidence. The mission at Sacred Heart School is to be structure and diligent so we can graduate students who
are confident: balanced of mind, academics and faith. How do we make students confident? First, we have to gain your confi-
dence and theirs. We do that by having a structured purpose all year long.
Confidence is having faith in someone. Self-confidence is trusting that you have what it takes to handle whatever happens.
You feel sure of yourself and enjoy trying new things, without letting doubts or fears hold you back. When you have confi-
dence in others, you rely on them. When you have confidence in yourself, others can rely on you. Our confidence comes from
God. We look to God for all things and we trust that his love for us will bring us all closer to Him. So every day the teachers
and everyone involved at Sacred Heart set out, with purpose, to reach our mission. It is simple and God has given us the map
to success. So let’s work together this year to always be the light of Christ. To trust and love each other as we strive for confi-
dent and balanced students.
God Bless,
Anne Atkin, principal

HAPPY FIRST WEEK BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!
It has been a WONDERFUL first week getting to know all of the kids down in the pre-
school room. The first couple days in class we were busy learning all of the class rules,
schedule, and how things work in class. We have also been busy getting to know one an-
other. Also this week, we have been busy learning the proper way to hold crayons: Thumb
is bent, pointer points to the tip, tall man uses its side. We tuck the last two fingers in
and take them for a ride. We also started work in our green Get Set For School work-
books and in our Religion workbooks.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns throughout the school
year: [email protected]
I hope you all have a great weekend and I am looking forward to this great school year!
Miss Jessica

News from Kindergarten
Dear Families It has been a wild week in kindergarten. We have learned our routine, the rules of the classroom and made lots of new friends. It has been busy but we are all starting to settle in. This week we have been spending lots of time on projects to help us get to know our friends better and how to be a good friend. We were also reviewing the correct way to write our numbers 0-5. Hand-writing can be challenging and frustrating be-cause we have to really pay attention to how we form the numbers. Please help your child with this and make sure they are writing them the correct way. Thank you for giving me the oppor-tunity to work with your children, they have al-ready found their way into my heart. Mrs. Marry
News for 3rd/4th
Welcome to a new school year! Here are just a couple of items that would be helpful for parents to know for this year. First of all, homework. Besides the 20 minutes of reading to be done at home daily, the students will be assigned spelling words to write once a week and a math worksheet will be assigned once or twice a week this year. (That's my goal anyway). I also recommend that parents check out where their child is as far as our math speed drills go and practice those facts. Regarding the math homework, I don't take a grade on those papers, I just mark to show if they are done so if there is a question don't lose any sleep over it! I assign it for practice and for the students to get into the habit of doing homework. As you know, we have a school wide goal of each student reading at least 20 books at their reading level. I verify that students have read these books by interviewing them about the book and asking such questions as what is their favorite part or character and why, what is the theme, problem, or solution of the book or how did it end or begin. Other questions are also possible. Nothing needs to be written or turned in. Also, regarding gym class, only fourth grade need to change into gym clothes which is on Monday and Thursday. Third grade are allowed to but don't have to. However, third graders do need to have gym shoes they can run in comfortably. Finally, students need to have attire for gym and proper uniform (including belts and proper Mass day uniforms) in order to participate in Home-workopoly.
News from 5th/6th grade
The 5th & 6th grade has gotten off to a wonderful start this week. Here are a few of the highlights from the week:
We have start our 40 Book Challenge, with Gabby, Darcie, Adam, and Sophia finishing their 1st book already! Ask your student about what the 40 Book Challenge is all about.
In Math we have begun Chapter 1 which is all about place value. You should have seen two math assignments come home as homework this week.
In Language Arts, we read a story from Patricia Polacco called Thank you, Mr. Falker. During this story we discussed what it means to Notice and what it means to Wonder.
I have put just a couple of our assignments from the week into powerschool; please take a few minutes over the weekend to log on and make sure that everything is working. Lastly, Your student has a letter about choosing an instrument with them (they may choose between violin, viola, and cello). Please fill this out and return on Tuesday September 4, 2018. If you have any questions please email me: [email protected]

Reading Goals for the
school
20 Minutes every night
Reading is “brain food”
Our brains develop as we “feed” them with
experiences. The experience of reading
(whether you’re the reader or the one being
read to) activates and “exercises” many of the
areas of the brain. The visual cortex works as
your eyes track the words on the page and
look at the illustrations. Your memory makes
connections between what you already know
about the topic of the story and its content.
You integrate new information learned
through reading further strengthening and
growing your network of knowledge. Reading
provides one of the most enriching and com-
plex brain activities available in life.
20 minutes a night= 1,800,00 words per year
