Each year the Maleny Apex Aus-tralia Day Breakfast and the Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club Aussie Day celebration continues to grow.

2016 was no exception, even allow-ing for the prospect of heavy rain being expected to cross the area.

This great family day is a place where newer members of the com-munity can find out about organisations that are active in the area and just how they can join those organisations.

It is also a great family day where families can get active together with the running of events such as gumboot throwing, mini soccer games, athletics events just to name a few.

There was also a display of vintage

and veteran cars from the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club.

The Maleny Rural Fire Brigade gave static displays of fire prevention techniques. Blazer the Fire Service Mascot was also in attendance and was a hit with the younger family members.

The Maleny RFB are always on the lookout for more volunteers.

It is not until you attend a day such as this that you really realise just how many community organisa-tions there are in the Maleny area.

It matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to time. One of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rules. The most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the “NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL”.

Private Health Insurance on the rise againPrivate Health Insurance companies have made an application for another rise in premiums this year. Premium policies have risen by over 30% in the past five years and this year the rise is expected to rise at the same rate which means that many consumers will be paying a possible extra $300 per year.

As premiums continue to rise many consumers simply opt out of private health and depend entirely on the public health system as they cannot afford private health insurance.

Truthful Jones Tells... that his uncle Mick from Ireland visited him in Maleny. Un-cle Mick took Mum and their son Pat to Brisbane for the first time.

Mum had an appointment with a doctor, so the two men went off for a walk along Queen Street. As they passed a building, the door opened automatically. They de-cided to go in, having to dodge as the doors tried to close before they were properly inside.

“Gosh, Dad, I hope we can get back out again,” said Pat.

While in the auditorium, they watched as a woman, old and wrinkled, hobbled past. She made her way to a marble wall and a section of it mysteriously slid open. The woman stepped in and the wall closed behind her.

Dad and Pat stood watching as a counter above the door climbed from 0 to 20. It paused for a few moments and then counted back down to 0. There was a ‘ding’, the wall opened and a beautiful, spry young woman stepped out, walking brightly out of the build-ing.

Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged!

“Son, go get your mother…!”

Moral: You can never put any-thing past those relatives who visited Truthful from Ireland can you!

Maleny Precinct Masterplan 2015 - 2031 released

Improved functionality, usage and capacity at key sport and recreation sites within the Maleny locality are just some of the benefits outlined in the Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan 2016-2031.At the general meeting of the Sunshine Coast Council held at Caloundra on January 28th the latest version of the master-plan for the Maleny Community Precincts was released.

This plan not only covers the Maleny Precinct land at North Maleny but include the Maleny Show-grounds and the Witta Sports-ground.

In approving this master-plan the council has not made a commit-ment to fund all recommendations from the Maleny Sport and Recrea-tion Master Plan.

One of the major improvements will be the extension of walk/cycle pathways to connect Maleny Show-grounds to the Maleny Community Precinct.

Local Councillor Ms Jenny McKay said, “The final plan approval came after a long and extensive commu-nity consultation about what the community needs were. After all this is a project is projected over the next 16 years.”

Future stages of development will be determined in accordance with council’s future Capital Works budgets, successful applications for external funding and contributions that can be made from clubs and groups who occupy and use these spaces.

Maleny area dodges a bullet with storm

With severe storms predicted over the period Thursday January 28th until February 1st it appeared that the predictions would be correct.

Thursday afternoon until Friday morning Maleny township received 25mm of rain whilst further afield areas such as Mapleton received 129mm. Some areas got as much as 10% of their annual rainfall in just one day.

Let us hope that our area is lucky enough to escape without the severe storms during this period of very unstable weather conditions.

With a federal election looming later in the year - maybe Septem-ber, October or November the silly political season is soon to be upon us.

Politicians looking to retain their jobs will now ask us to overlook their short comings and give them another opportunity to do it all again.

This is the time that many poli-ticians promise the world if they are re-elected. Remember that most of them singularly do not have the ability to deliver any of their promises unless it is a hung parliament which seldom is the case. This means that indepen-dents seldom have much ability to drive agendas.

It is also important to remember that promises that are delivered have to be paid for by you and I as the government has no money of its own. There is no such thing as a FREE LUNCH.

That is not to say that nothing should be done to save money, but we have to be a little more conscious about what we order and ensure that we are getting what is best for Australia as a whole and is not merely some-thing that might be a good idea. We need to get as much bang for each dollar as we can.

The interest bill is already greater than ONE Billion dollars a month and that amount is rapidly grow-ing. Just think what could be done with that money if it was not paid in interest payments.

Question closely candidates be-fore making a decision.

The Musings of an old codger!

Mary Cairncross Park gets council approval for upgrade

The popular Maleny iconic Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve facility has received approval from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council at a general meeting at Caloundra on the 28th January, 2015 to fast-track funding for a major upgrade. The park covers an area of 56 acres and about 2kms of formed walking tracks through the subtropical rainforest.

This would allow for a funding grant of $ one million State Government funding towards the project. The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Man-agement committee has already raised about $250,000 towards the project through their “gold coin donation” for entry to the park.

The application has to be in the hands of the State Government by January 31st, 2016.

The proposed upgrade would include a new education centre and new cafe building. This upgrade would enhance the Education Centre that is staffed by volunteers who are able to conduct guided tours of the park. The Education Centre includes a Diorama show-ing the history of the Australian rainforests.

Mary Cairncross Park continues to see an increased numbers of visitors, totalling more than 200,000 attending the park during all seasons of the year.

Not all you read on Facebook is the truth!

As recent as this week, information has been circulating on social me-dia about changes that require the shackles used when towing a trailer to be rated as well as police enforcement of this requirement in the Gympie area.

Vehicle Standards can advise that under the current legisla-tion, while the safety chains that are used to connect a trailer to a towing vehicle are required to comply with Australian Standard AS 4177.4 Caravan and light trailer towing components, there is no legal requirement for shackles to comply with a particular Australian Standard.

However, in the interest of road safety, the Department of Trans-port and Main Roads strongly recommends that vehicle opera-tors use shackles that are either certified to AS 2741-2002 Shackles or are identifiable as having a suitable design for the trailer and towing vehicle combination.

These requirements are not new and have been consistent across most States and Territories for many years.

Unfortunately people continue to post information that can cause un-necessary concern to unsuspecting readers. Whilst it might take a few extra seconds to find out the truth before posting it is a good policy to check the veracity of the information before posting to avoid confus-ing or embarrassing others.
