TARGET AUDIENCEThis program is designed specifically for advanced practice providers interested in updating their practice and refreshing their knowledge related to common disease states, comorbidities, and complications.

PROGRAM AGENDA

OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

• Discuss how to approach common sensitive topics in the medical field such as consent, harassment, gender inequality, racism, and bias

• Classify potential pathology commonly evaluated in family practice

• Analyze local anesthesia choices commonly used in the office setting

• Appraise suture choice based on pathology and anatomy

• Describe incision choice, wound healing, and scar maturation for common office-based surgical procedures

• Examine considerations for performing office surgery such as supplies, equipment, time required, reimbursement, and specimens

• Discuss common behavioral and developmental issues found in pediatrics and determine how to better understand and respond to issues such as prematurity, intrauterine drug exposure, developmental delay, intellectual disability, language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, sleep disorders, and lifestyle problems

• Discuss the health implications and treatment options related to morbid obesity as a chronic disease

• Review the weight loss results and complications of the most commonly performed bariatric surgical procedures

• Assess cutting-edge products and procedures for bariatric surgery and weight management

• Examine the current research, pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics of marijuana

• Identify provider’s responsibilities for certifying patients and the safe guards for prescribing medical marijuana

• Discuss the Pennsylvania legislature’s point of view on medical marijuana

• Review how clinical documentation can affect both quality scores and reimbursement for hospitals and providers

• Summarize the basic concepts of inpatient hospital coding

• Discuss how documentation of certain conditions can affect the severity of illness and risk of mortality scores of your patients

• Discuss the principles for immediate postrenal transplant care

• Describe infectious and noninfectious complications related to renal transplants

AAPA ACCREDITATIONUPMC has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to designate AAPA Category 1 credits for activities designed primarily for its own learners and other learners within its network.

AMA ACCREDITATIONThe University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA DESIGNATION The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Other health care professionals are awarded 0.65 continuing education units (CEUs) which are equal to 6.5 contact hours.
