KELLO GG MIDDLE SCHOOL BI - MONTHLY ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER MARCH 31 , 2017 FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear Kellogg Families- We made it through the grey and rainy days of March and look forward to the start of a bright and hopefully, sunny Spring! There are many things to get excited about if you are a Knight. Track season has started and we have over 200 students out enjoying the many events available to them. It isn’t too late for more Knights to join, so send your student to the office to pick up a sports packet and they can get started in the fun. We have had an amazing first week with the sun breaking out for practice, and hope that this luck continues! FRIDAY KNIGHT LIVE

What’s that smell?!!? We are getting to that time of year when the sun shines a little longer, the air is warmer and middle school

kids get stinky! The combination of puberty and warm temperatures can make for an all around unpleasant environment in the classroom. We need your help! As a parent, what can you do? • · The nose knows. Pay attention and if you notice a scent emanating from your teen, take action! • · Talk to your teen about it. Let teens know that body odor is normal, and everyone deals with it. • · Have your teen BATHE with soap, DAILY, if not more. This includes washing hair with shampoo

also. A lot of the time, this will solve the problem. The school nurse has hygiene packs available for students.

• · Clean clothing. Ensure that your teen is wearing clean clothing and not just tossing on yesterday’s socks and underwear! For athletic activities, consider the kind of clothing that will wick the sweat away from the body. Also, check your kid’s shoes. They can be awfully stinky!

• · Deodorant or antiperspirant. Antiperspirants reduce sweating, which can cut down on body odor. Deodorants just neutralized the odor. Don’t be afraid to purchase two sticks, one for home and one for the gym or backpack. Again, the school nurse has hygiene packs available that include deodorant/antiperspirant.

• · Last but not least…talk with your teen’s doctor. Occasionally there are medical conditions that can cause body odor.

All joking aside, teen hygiene is an important lifelong social skill. Kids who don’t pay attention to their hygiene are at risk of being targets of teasing by other students. Please talk to your kids and support them during these tumultuous teen years!

$2000 WINTER/SPRING CHALLENGE!

CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES!

If every student's family and every staff member brought in:

Just 10 BOX TOPS (=$1) that would bring in $700! Just $100 worth of BALLINGER THRIFTWAY RECEIPTS (=$1) that's another $700!

Those two efforts alone would raise $1400 for our kids. Throw a $1 bill in there for good measure, and that brings the total to over $2000 raised!

(Okay, so.... double those efforts and we will have raised $4000 by the end of the school year. Just

sayin'....).

Let's do it! I'll send monthly updates on our progress! Thank you!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOX TOPS PARENT, CATHY BENTLEY
