DESCRIPTION
Open data has the potential to power tools that provide solutions to real problems. Although the UK is the world leader in releasing open data, its use in informing real world solutions has been limited and fragmented, with innovative startups sometimes lacking support and data expertise to scale to a sustainable business level.Here you will find information on the final winners of the first three Open Data Challenges - individuals who have developed a solution to a specific social issue and been supported through their journey by the Open Data Challenge Series to win £40,000. Topics covered will range from helping parents engage with their child’s learning to enabling community energy groups to engage with energy efficiency interventions.

What’s the big deal with Bike Theft?◈ Around 500,000 bikes are stolen every year costing the UK over £1 billion.
◈ The problem is so bad that the average new bike owner can expect to have their bike stolen in under 23 months.
◈ Victims often feel that the police will do nothing to help them, leading to only 1 in 4 thefts being reported.
◈ Bike theft is one of the biggest reasons for giving up cycling second only to road safety
◈ Victims often told by police not to expect it back, and to look at local markets and online classifieds

So how do we plan to solve it?Like any industry thefts are driven by demand, the suppliers (thieves/fences) aim to make a profit and in the current used bike market this is easily accomplished.
Check That Bike is a service that aims to change this by providing an answer to the question “is that bike stolen?” to potential buyers of used bikes.
◈ Uses frame numbers and unique IDs to query whether a bike is stolen
◈ Information comes from both police forces and commercial sources
◈ Extra advice available to help buyers avoid stolen goods
◈ The Netherlands took a similar approach and halved bike thefts in3 years.
Impact so far◈ 17,000 visitors since January
◈ 6,000 checks
◈ 653 stolen bikes identified
◈ Recovering property worth £174,351
◈ Indirectly benefiting the UK by £1.3 million
◈ New public API used by 29 developers
◈ Open data initiative supported by 5,500 cyclists

We are currently working with a Solicitor to obtain data from a selection of Police Forces in the UK on a regular basis.
◈ Integrate with other servicesWe are currently working with classified websites and cycling websites to integrate checking functionality within their own service.
◈ Get more people checking bikes with CheckThatBike!Embarking on a campaign to promote the service and introduce the idea that buying stolen goods is not an acceptable thing to do.
