Celebrate the Top Dogs in Obedience and Rally!

Thank you for joining us for the 19th annual AKC National Obedience Championship (NOC) and the inaugural AKC Rally® National Competition. You have worked hard to meet the qualifications; we congratulate you and are pleased to welcome you and your dogs to these events.

The National Obedience Championship and Rally National Competition are part of a larger event the AKC has named the “Extravaganza.” These events are being held in conjunction with the National Agility Championship (NAC). In total, the Extravaganza has attracted more than 1,600 dogs to compete for the highest honors in their sports. Please take the time to visit and appreciate the outstanding dogs and owners participating in each of these events.

For the NOC, thousands of competitors have exhibited throughout the year in order to qualify for this event. The field has been narrowed to the top-ranking dogs in each breed as well as the top 25 dogs overall based on Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH) points. Ninety-six teams will compete over the next two days for the honor of being named National Obedience Champion.

NOC competitors come from 30 states and Canada, and represent 36 different breeds. These obedient dogs will perform a series of exercises such as heeling, scent discrimination and retrieving over jumps; judged on skill and accuracy as well as the natural movement of the handler and willingness and enjoyment of the dog. All dogs will compete both days, in eight rings with two to three exercises per ring.

The Rally National Competition will consist of four classes of competition – Novice, Advanced, Excellent and Advanced Excellent. Dogs have qualified by earning titles plus qualifying legs with high scores. 168 teams representing 50 breeds plus All-American dogs from 36 states and Canada will compete in this inaugural event.

The AKC also expresses its appreciation to the over 60 volunteers that have offered their time and expertise to make this event a success. Without them, an event of this size would not be possible.

AKC Code of SportsmanshipPREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year ofAKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsman-ship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and com-panion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why oursport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodicallyarticulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.

• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.

• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebreddogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.

• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.

• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.

• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other thanthe merits of the dogs.

• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.

• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing thesport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able toappreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.

AKC RALLY® NATIONAL COMPETITION – DESCRIPTION & SCORING

The AKC Rally® National Competition will consist of four classes. Each Novice, Advanced and Excellent entry will compete twice in the class entered and each Rally Advanced/Excellent (RAE) entry will compete two times in both the Advanced and Excellent classes.

Cumulative scores and times will be used to determine placements in each of the four classes. If there are any ties for placements, each team will run once for score and time. In the case of ties for RAE placements, the team will run an Excellent course.

For this National Event, scoring will be in accordance with the AKC Rally® Regulations with the following exceptions:

• The first attempt/performance of each station will be evaluated and scored accordingly. Failure to perform the principal parts of each station on the first attempt/performance will result in an IP (Incorrectly Performed -10 points) penalty. There will not be any 3 point retry penalties. The maximum penalty for each station will remain at 10 points.

Meet Our Rally JudgesPat Knepley

Rally first came to my attention in 2000 and I have been active in teaching, competing, and judging it ever since. I introduced Rally to Spokane Dog Training Club and Lilac City Dog Training Club members in the basement of my home. It was an immediate hit and both clubs began offering rally classes. Spokane Dog Training Club offered it at their trials as a Non-Regular class and now as a titling sport.

I applied for and became a provisional AKC Rally® Judge in 2005 and was approved for Novice that same year. AKC approval for Advanced and Excellent came in 2006. I was on the 2006 AKC Rally® Advisory Committee. Seeing the AKC offices in Raleigh was a real treat and meeting other judges for the first time was very enjoyable. It was a hard few days but the improvements to the sport were well worth it.

My CDX OA OAJ Sheltie got her RE before she was retired and my newest puppy will be pursuing his Rally career as soon as he›s ready. My husband decided to join me and asked me to train him for table steward.

It is a tremendous honor to be invited as one of the Rally judges for the first AKC Rally® National Competition in Tulsa. I hope the exhibitors enjoy the experience as much as I know I will.

Barbara McClatcheyThe first time I saw Rally, in around

2001, a friend had suggested that I watch a demonstration at a large show. It did not look at all like Obedience, with people milling around in a large ring and reading signs, and then going into the ring and heeling with their dogs. Later, when a rally class was promoted at a facility in Houston as a way to improve Obedience heeling, I signed up for it and found the Rally concept intriguing and its performance exhilarating. I began showing in Rally as a non-titling class, and in 2002 and I became an AKC Non-Regular Obedience judge in order to judge Rally as a Non-Regular class.

The first year of AKC Rally® as a titling class (2005) was an exciting time. I was able

to judge the first AKC Rally® titling class in the state of Texas in January 2005, at a cold, windy outdoor trial south of Houston. In addition to judging, I showed and titled my



Barbara McClatchey (continued)own four Pomeranians during that year, and my Tiffany became the first RE and then the first RAE Pomeranian. I continue to train and show my current three Pomeranians and one Papillion in both Obedience and Rally, which I have found to be complementary to each other.

It was an honor and a joy for me to be a member of the 2010 AKC Rally® Advisory Committee and I appreciate the present opportunity to judge at the first AKC Rally® National Competition. When someone asks whether I most enjoy showing in or judging Rally, I have to reply that although I love to show; judging is more fun because it lasts longer. I am impressed by all the wonderful teams I judge, and I look forward to seeing some spectacular teamwork in Tulsa.

Meet Our Rally Judges

Deborah NeufeldDeborah Neufeld has been involved with

Obedience competition since 1981 and Rally since mid-2000, shortly after Bud Kramer introduced it. She is an AKC Rally® and Obedience Judge, who developed and taught the first Rally classes for Orlando Dog Training Club. Deborah was honored to be invited to represent the sport of Rally on both the first and second AKC Rally® Advisory Committees. Deb also writes a regular column for Front and Finish, and is a co-moderator for the Rally Judges list on Yahoo Groups. One of her proudest moments was earning the RAE title with her Boxer, Tia.

She currently resides in Kissimmee, Florida with her husband, Chip, a Boxer, a Cavalier, and a Toy Fox Terrier. All her dogs train for Rally as well as Obedience. Deborah appreciates the honor of being chosen to judge the first AKC Rally® National Competition, and is looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Jean NocillyI first became aware of Rally at a demonstration at the Cleveland Crown Classic

Shows. It was a preview of the proposed new sport that AKC was considering adopting. After Rally was recognized by the AKC, I dusted off my Champion UDX Bouvier, Anchor, and worked through the levels with her. I thoroughly enjoyed it and decided that my next dog would earn an RAE. In the course of earning Grover’s RAE, I decided that I would like to work towards becoming a Rally, as well as an Obedience judge. Grover brought me on an exciting journey in AKC events. In addition to earning an RAE, he also earned his conformation and herding championships, a UDX, an

Sandy WalrothSandy Walroth has been involved with

Obedience since mid 1988 and Rally since early 2000. She introduced the new sport of Rally to the southwestern Pennsylvania area later that year. She developed and taught the first Rally classes for Westmoreland County Obedience Training Club and continued teaching there for many years. After moving to Texas, she became active in the Houston Obedience Training Dog Club, where she has updated the Rally program with each AKC program change.

She is currently teaching Rally, in addition to obedience and agility, for Houston. She has also presented many Rally seminars and clinics since 2002. She has been judging Rally for the AKC since 2001 as a Non-Regular class and as a titling class since 2005. Sandy had the honor of serving on the 2010 AKC Rally® Advisory Committee. She owns a large Rally Obedience, a Rally Teach, and a Rally Judges list on YahooGroups. Her first Rally titles came on January 2, 2005 on two Shelties and an Aussie. She is showing her current Aussie in Excellent; her young Sheltie will be starting soon. Both dogs also train for Obedience. Sandy is looking forward to seeing all the wonderful performances at the AKC Rally® National Competition, and wishes all teams the best of luck.

AX and AXJ. Grover and I were proud to compete in 2006 at the National Obedience Championship in Long Beach, California. My second RAE was earned by Mariah, who is also my second herding champion. Her sister, Dust, has 7 RAE legs. Both sisters are currently working towards their UD and TD titles. My two younger Bouviers, Callie and Nike have earned their Rally Novice titles.

In 2009 I began the next chapter of my Rally experience by becoming a Rally judge. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I find judging Rally to be the perfect complement to judging Obedience. I am honored to be a part of the first AKC Rally® National Competition.

AKC Code of SportsmanshipPREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year ofAKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsman-ship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and com-panion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why oursport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodicallyarticulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.

• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.

• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebreddogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.

• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.

• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.

• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other thanthe merits of the dogs.

• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.

Meet Our Obedience JudgesChuck Anderson

My path to having the honor of judging the new AKC National Obedience Championship began in 1979 when I earned my first CD. I have owned four Golden Retrievers and all four have earned the title of Obedience Trial Champion. I showed my first Golden to his breed championship and OTCH as well as earning his tracking title and field working certificate. I began judging Obedience in 1989 and then went emeritus during the time my wife, Sharon was the AKC Agility Director. I returned to judging in 2008 when she retired. I have shown dogs for 33 years. I previously have owned three training schools, a boarding kennel and have been an obedience instructor in all levels from pet owners to competition classes. I also founded Chuck and Don’s Pet Food Outlet stores but now am semi-retired. I also formed the Northstar Obedience Association in Minnesota which hosted the Gaines Obedience Championship; as well as judging some of those events. Thank you to the American Kennel Club for asking me to judge the outstanding dogs that I will see in the ring this weekend.

Ronnie BizerIn 1980 I received a beautiful golden

retriever named Love for my birthday. I took her to the park district obedience class just to work on the usual problems of come and walk on a loose leash. There the instructor asked if I had ever considered going on with her. Going where???

Well, here I am today judging the AKC National Obedience Championship with over 200 titles to my name including an OTCH, 15 UD’s plus several UDX’s, tracking, agility,

conformation, and rally titles. I have personally worked Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Labrador Retrievers, a Papillion, a Brittany, and a Rough Collie. Isaac, my rottie boy, recently earned his VCD4.

Kanosak Canine Training was incorporated in 1990 and I have been a professional dog trainer since then. I’m one lucky person having a job that I love; even missing it when on vacation! Judging just seemed like a normal extension of my profession.

Personally, I am a mother of three, grandmother of six, taught science and health for 14 years, managed a large humane society for over four years, and have held other jobs along the way.

I am honored at being chosen to judge the NOC this year.



Meet Our Obedience JudgesTerri Clingerman

I started competing in obedience in 1991 with Labrador Retrievers. My Novice A dog, Honey, was 10 years old when she earned her CD. I thought she was too old to learn how to jump 1¼ her height in order to continue on so I retired her. I started over with a puppy, and Speed and I had many “firsts” together. He was my first CDX, first UD, first JH, first TD, and first OTCH. We also competed at one of the early NOIs in St. Louis. It was a thrill to compete with other top dogs from around the country! I earned OTCHs with two other Labradors (Chase and Danny) and with my first Border Collie Rhys. Currently I have Border Collies and Cardigan Welsh Corgis. My Border Collies introduced me to the world of herding, and now I even have my own small flock of sheep. Cardigans are a well kept secret; they’re a big dog in a small package and are delightful to live with.

My dogs and I enjoy competing in nearly all of AKC’s venues. In addition to obedience, we’ve earned titles in hunt tests, agility, herding, and tracking. I also compete with my Cardigans in conformation, and handled both of them to their championships.

I’ve taught classes for several clubs over the years and also coach people individually. I started judging in 2005 and really enjoy it. I get to be a part of someone’s special day. It’s a thrill for me as well as for the exhibitor when they celebrate that special leg or title. It’s also a way for me to give back to the sport that has given me so much. I’ve made many wonderful friends while competing in dog sports, not just locally but all over the country. I’m honored to be judging this year’s National Obedience Championship and am looking forward to judging all of the wonderful teams. Good luck to everyone!

Curt A. CurtisMr. Curtis, began training dogs at the age of eight

in 1960, and has been training and working with dogs since. At the age of 16 he began to instruct and train professionally working full time at a kennel in the Portland, Oregon area while attending school. In 1972, Mr. Curtis founded Esquire Canine College in Portland where he met his wife Karla a student. In 1977, Mr. Curtis’s profession moved the two of them to the Medford, Oregon area where they began Obedience Incorporated.

Curt has conducted dog training and tracking classes in Portland, Eugene, Corvallis, Medford, Grants Pass and Salem, Oregon. During this same period of time Mr. Curtis acted as a consultant and trainer to several Police Canine Programs, in obedience, tracking, scent detection and man work. Mr. Curtis is currently approved to judge all AKC Obedience, Rally and Tracking Classes.

In 2005 Curt was hired by the American Kennel Club to oversee the Companion



Meet Our Obedience Judges

Susan EmersonDogs have been a part of my life for over 60

years. We always had Labs when I was growing up, but they were my Dad’s hunting dogs. In 1975, an Alaskan Malamute decided she needed to live with me, so I took her to obedience classes with the intent of having a well-trained pet. She was a great dog, but I never showed her. Over the next 10 years, I lived in three different states and it wasn’t until I moved back to Minneapolis in 1990 that I got my next dog. I originally went to the Humane Society to get a yellow Lab, but they didn’t have any. So I took home the cutest little Border Collie and called her Maggie.

We went to the same obedience school that I went to in the 70’s for pet training. After watching a demonstration of the different levels of obedience classes, I decided I wanted to do that with Maggie. Many of the other students showed and I loved the camaraderie and the fun we had when we traveled to all the shows. Maggie retired with a UDX earned in 13 shows and lived for over 15 years. She was a great dog and she could still do articles until her last few days. Cue, my rescue Border Collie who was blind in one eye, showed in herding, where he earned a HIT and placed second in his herding class at our National Specialty, when he was 10 years old. He lived to be 13.

Jake, my 14 year old Border Collie, retired from obedience due to medical issues, with a UD and 4 OTCH points. He is also a breed champion and received first award of merit at our National Specialty. My dog that I am currently showing is Bett, a smooth coat Border Collie. We just earned our UD and we are on to our UDX! Both Jake and Bett earned their RE titles as well.

When I first started training for competition, my instructor encouraged us to give back to the sport, so after 10 years of competing, I applied for Novice status and started judging obedience in 2001. I love judging and watching teams work together. A judge’s perspective of the team is unique and the special bond between handlers and their dogs is a joy to watch. I am honored to have been selected to judge the 2013 National Obedience Championship. Good luck to all the exhibitors and enjoy this special weekend.

Although Mr. Curtis started training with a Black Lab, the past 50+ years have allowed him to work with numerous dogs from all groups, in obedience, rally, tracking and conformation. Currently, Curt is working a Black and Tan Coonhound in obedience, rally and tracking.

Marilyn LittleMs. Little became aware of the Sport of

Dogs in 1970 with her purchase of Charlie, an oversized, over-enthusiastic Yellow Labrador Retriever male. She has over 60 Champions and multiple UD titles. Judging was the next step; she was approved to judge all levels of obedience in 1984 and is approved to judge fourteen of the Sporting breeds.

Currently she is a member of Sahuaro State Kennel Club, President; Papago Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Phoenix, Vice-President; Labrador Retriever Club, Judges Education co-chair; Sporting Dog Association of Arizona; Labrador Retriever Club of Southern California and American Dog Show Judges Association.

Jeffrey KernMy interest in Obedience started in 1994

with the purchase of a female black Labrador Retriever named Java. Java retired in 2002 with her UDX and many OTCH points. After several years in retirement I brought her out one last time and won HIT at the South Florida Labrador Retriever Club Specialty from the Open B class. I am also the breeder/owner of numerous American Cocker Spaniels Champions under the Kennel name, Valor. I am currently licensed to judge all Obedience and Rally classes. Interested in all performance events, I train my dogs in obedience, agility, herding and tracking.

Today my time is split between work, training and exhibiting Brew, my five year old Champion Border Collie from Wildfire Kennels and Ivy, my four year old Kerry Blue Terrier from Elbrley Kennels. I am a member of the Border Collie Society of America and the Greater Ocala Dog Club in Ocala Florida where I currently serve as club secretary. I have had the honor of judging the German Shorthair Pointer National Specialty, the American Shetland Sheepdog Association National Specialty and the Border Collie Society of America National Specialty. Becoming an Obedience Judge is another extension of the sport that I love and a way for me to give back to the sport. I enjoy traveling and judging all the great obedience teams around the country. I am employed by Dell Services as a Senior Software Advisor. It is a privilege and honor to have been chosen by the American Kennel Club to judge this prestigious event.




Patricia ScullyMs. Scully rode as an equestrian, and

qualified for the American Horse Show Association Maclay and Hunter Seat Medal horsemanship classes. Pat is a graduate of Cornell University, and worked as a cardiovascular pharmacologist for Pfizer, Inc. in the fields of angina and hypertension research. Ms. Scully has been active in the sport of purebred dogs, and in the Pug breed, for 50 years. Pat is a licensed judge for Obedience and Rally in the United States and foreign countries. She has finished Pugs in Obedience and Conformation in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, and Mexico.

She has been the AKC Delegate for the Obedience Training Club of Hawaii, Inc.

since 1985 and a member of the AKC Board of Directors since 1997, a former member of the AKC Delegates Coordinating Committee, and the former Chairman of the AKC Delegates Committee for Obedience, Tracking and Agility. Patricia has served on the following Board of Directors Committees: Ad Hoc for Judges Development, Appeals, Audit, Business, Clubs & Events, Pension, and Public Relations & Public Affairs and is a former AKC Board liaison for the following Delegate Committees: Herding, Earth Dog & Coursing; Field Trial & Hunting Test Events; and Obedience, Tracking & Agility.

She was honored to serve on the 1999, 2003, and 2007 Obedience Advisory Committees, and the 2006 AKC Rally® Advisory Committee. Other positions include: former Director, President, Show Chairman, Obedience Chairman, Honorary Lifetime Member, and Hall of Fame inductee of the Pug Dog Club of America, Inc.; Director, President, Treasurer, and Obedience and Rally Chairman of the Tuxedo Park Kennel Club, Inc.; Honorary Lifetime Member of the K-9 Obedience Training Club of Essex County, NJ, Inc.; former Director, Obedience Chairman, and Honorary Lifetime Member of the Ramapo Kennel Club, Inc.; former President of the Association of Obedience Clubs & Judges, Inc.; and a member of the 1996 AKC Presidential Search Committee.

Awards include the Gaines Medal for Good Sportsmanship (a three time recipient), 2012 AKC Lifetime Achievement Award for Companion Events, the Richard H. D’Ambrisi National Obedience Award in 1988, and the 2009 Ramapo Kennel Club’s AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.

The Sport of Dogs takes Ms. Little on the road multiple weekends a year, either judging or exhibiting, all over the country and provides her the opportunity to meet interesting people, judge super dogs, and share those unique dog experiences with other fanciers. You will still find Ms. Little competing with her Labradors under the OKAK prefix.
