Adrian Smith says he doesn’t fault President Donald Trump for reaching out to Democrats on immigration issues, but says he’s not ready to back a proposal that would give legal protections to immigrants illegally brought to the country as children. Smith, who represents Nebraska’s vast, ru- ral 3rd District, said Thursday he’s “not offended that the presi- dent is reaching out.” But he criticized Democratic leaders for prematurely releasing details. Asked if he would back a pro- posed bill that would extend legal protections to immigrants known as “dreamers,” Smith said he has concerns about “an amnesty-type of vote,” adding “if we take folks here today – technically illegally and we all of the sudden say they’re le- gal, that does send some messages that I have a hard time with.” RETURN EDUCATION FLEXIBILITY Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has spent parts of two days in Nebraska, visiting a variety of schools. DeVos says she wants to return education flexibility to the states. “Most crea- tive and innovative solutions to rethinking school and to meeting students’ needs are going to come at the local level,” DeVos tells reporters after her visit to the Lincoln Public Schools “Zoo School” held at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Sec. DeVos learns from students how the zoo plays into their education. DeVos spent parts of two days in Nebraska, touring first the Midland University Omaha campus Wednesday evening. DeVos visited Nelson Mandela Elementary School in Omaha Thursday morn- ing, then dropped in on classes at St. Mary’s Catholic School across the from the state Capitol in Lincoln and visited the inno- vative “Zoo School,” a science focused program Lincoln Public Schools holds at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. DeVos makes no apologies for visiting a Catholic elementary school along with visits to public schools. RICKETTS URGING JAPANESE OFFICIALS Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts says he’s urging Japanese offi- cials to talk to the U.S. about tariffs after Japan announced in July that it would impose a 50 percent tariff on frozen beef imports. Ricketts said in a news conference call Thursday that the tariff will suppress some of the demand for beef, but that exports will continue. His discussions about beef came during a Japanese trade mission. Ricketts says he’s confident Japanese demand for Nebraska-made beef is growing. The U.S. and Australia account for 90 percent of Japan’s frozen beef im- ports. The usual tariff rate for frozen beef imports is 38.5 per- cent. Under World Trade Organization rules, Japan can intro- duce safeguard tariffs when imports rise more than 17 percent year-on-year in any given quarter. *11:30-1:30 LUNCH IN THE CHURCH BASEMENT (PULLED PORK & CHEESY POTATOES) *NOON-3:30 SNACK SHACK *NOON-3:30 SILENT AUCTION *3:00-4:00 LIVE AUCTION *NOON-4:00 GAMES ON CHURCH GROUNDS For more information and to see auction items, visit our Facebook page at St. Patrick Church, McCook

Stratton on 103.9 The Hawk. Pregame coverage starts at 7 p.m. The

Jay Bruce did all he could to stay on his feet as his teammates

doused him in water and baby powder while pulling at his jersey in

an historic mob scene on Thursday night. The Royals put up an

admirable fight, but the veteran outfielder delivered the knockout

blow that kept the Indians' incredible streak going. The Indians

rallied for one run in the ninth inning and pulled off The Streak's

first walk-off in the 10th, when Bruce's run-scoring double sealed a

3-2 victory that extended Cleveland's American League-record

winning streak to 22 games. Progressive Field quaked like the team

hopes it will throughout October, and Bruce walked away drenched

and happily bruised. Game two of the series is tonight. Pregame

coverage on The Big Talker 1300 KBRL-AM starts at 5:30 p.m.

A Single helmet for the Air Force’s new F-35 fighter

cost over $400,000.
