2015 Happy New Year to one and all I donrsquot think one can ever say it too much hellip especially if you are a breast cancer survivor or one of the wonder-ful people that help make what we do successful

And happy anniversary to Friends in Pink We made it Irsquom sure our founder is looking at us with a smile on her face Friends in Pink aka Pink Tie Friends Inc aka Friends of the Breast Care Center of the Treasure Coast is 10 years old It took a lot of people including survivors volunteers donors and benefactors to make this happen While there are too many to mention you know who you are and I humbly thank you all Most important our recipients thank you Without everyone being on board with Nancy OrsquoNeillrsquos vision more than 225 inadequately insured people would have never re-ceived nor continue to receive needed breast cancer care

A lot is in the making to secure the future of Friends in Pink as we look ahead Strategically the time has come to seri-ously consider Friends in Pink in perpetuity Therefore we are working on creating an endowment fund Establishing an endowment for the future of Friends in Pink is critical because there will always be someone who needs financial assistance with breast cancer surgery and treatment We plan to have our first event dedicated to this effort in 2015

Volunteers are the life blood of Friends In Pink and we will remain volunteer driven for a very long time But this year we will see the establishment of a Volunteer Guild and name Volunteer Coordinators A guild will give our volunteers more authority to determine their level of par-ticipation in events activities and fundraising And we will have these guilds and coordinators for each county in which we have recipients In most cases our Volunteer Coordinators will manage those volunteers whose activi-ties will include event coverage and office tasks such as

filing to manning office phones for instance All activities will be carried out in a manner that will best benefit the recipients of Friends in Pink hellipthe reason why we exist

No (wo)man is an island So goes it for our Board of Directors We need the guidance and input from the community of Treasure Coast prominent people who feel as committed to our mission as we are Beginning this year we will establish the Friends in Pink Adviso-ry Board These individuals will be a constant source of executive guidance and information for the driv-ing force of Friends in Pink your Board of Directors

Last but certainly not least we will have a single point of leadership for our fundraising efforts Experienced with successful events and campaigns too numerous to mention our new Fundraising Chairperson will suc-cessfully raise money for Friends In Pink through various channels A lifetime Treasure Coast resident Jeannette Weiss will take the helm of our fundrais-ing this year We look forward to her ideas and guid-ance Shersquos already working on several ideas Please join me in welcoming and supporting Jeannette as she combines her PR role with these new responsibilities

Well those are the highlights of our 10th anniversary hellipooooooh hellip except for our kick off A lovely retro venue is the scene of our 10th anniversary celebra-tion On Jan 31 2015 at the Flagler Center in Stu-art from 6 ndash 10 pm we will honor longtime support-ers and invite new ones to our Friends In Pink Gala

Tickets are still available on FriendsInPinknet or you can call Vivien at 772-344-1365 or Amber at 772-284-3007 This 1950s themed event is all inclusive and will include dancing music fun food and drink all to raise money for our Friends in Pink Recipients Join us

Plan for tax season

Charitable contributions made to qualified organizations may help lower your tax bill The IRS has put together the following eight tips to help ensure your contributions pay off on your tax return 1 If your goal is a legitimate tax deduction then you must be giving to a qualified organization Also you cannot deduct contributions made to specific individuals politi-cal organizations and candidates See IRS Publication 526 Charitable Contributions for rules on what constitutes a qualified organization

2 To deduct a charitable contribution you must file Form 1040 and itemize deductions on Schedule A

3 If you receive a benefit because of your contribution such as merchandise tickets to a ball game or other goods and services then you can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received

4 Donations of stock or other non-cash property are usually valued at the fair market value of the property Clothing and household items must generally be in good used condition or better to be deductible Special rules ap-ply to vehicle donations

5 Fair market value is generally the price at which prop-erty would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller neither having to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of all the relevant facts

6 Regardless of the amount to deduct a contribution of cash check or other monetary gift you must maintain a bank record payroll deduction records or a written commu-nication from the organization containing the name of the organization the date of the contribution and amount of the contribution For text message donations a telephone bill will meet the record-keeping requirement if it shows the name of the receiving organization the date of the contri-bution and the amount given

7 To claim a deduction for contributions of cash or property equaling $250 or more you must have a bank record payroll deduction records or a written acknowledg-ment from the qualified organization showing the amount of the cash and a description of any property contributed and whether the organization provided any goods or ser-vices in exchange for the gift One document may satisfy both the written communication requirement for monetary gifts and the written acknowledgement requirement for all contributions of $250 or more If your total deduction for all noncash contributions for the year is over $500 you must complete and attach IRS Form 8283 Noncash Chari-table Contributions to your return

8 Taxpayers donating an item or a group of similar items valued at more than $5000 must also complete Sec-tion B of Form 8283 which generally requires an appraisal by a qualified appraiser
