CYRIL GEORGEcoming soon Winter 2015/2016friends

In 2015, Assistant Professor of AlaskaNative Languages X'̱unei ­ Lance A.Twitchell secured grant funds from theRasmuson Foundation to help create anew centerpiece for Egan Library—theCyril George Alaska Native KnowledgeCenter.  This space will honor ḴaalḵáawuCyril George, an esteemed Tlingit elderfrom the Deisheetaan Clan of Angoon,who passed away in 2014.  As X'̱uneiwrote in the grant application, this projectwill “continue to reshape our campus inways that focuses energy on the visibilityand centrality of indigenous voices.”  

This project is also supported by agenerous gift from Kathy Ruddy, a closefriend of Cyril George. After consultationwith Library management, Alaska Nativefaculty and staff leaders, and UASFacilities Planning staff, a space on theMain Level of the Library was selected asthe future home of the Cyril Georgecollection.  This space is literally right atthe heart of the library, extending frombehind the Reference Desk to theReading Alcove and also repurposing aportion of the library currently used formicroform collections.

COLLECTIONcoming soon Winter 2015/2016friends

Gift and grant funds will be used to purchase new shelving for the Cyril George AlaskaNative Knowledge Center.  The collection itself will initially be drawn from the EganLibrary’s current collection of books and media on Alaska Native cultures, as well as onlanguage revitalization and indigenous peoples worldwide.  There will also be areas forstudy.  In the future, there is interest in adding additional media stations and newfurnishings, as well as continuing to grow the collection. Future funding will also besought to enhance the area with artwork, potentially including the creation of four Tlingithouseposts around the structural columns in the space.
