FOL Board Notes !!

From the Director’s Desk…

Dear Friends,

We’ve had an exciting start to our Summer Reading Program. See Angela’s report on page 2. Our Business Membership continues to grow and we will

start doing short focus stories on them this Fall. Our checkbook balance is $8,096.36, as of June 30th. We will have several expenses coming soon as we partially sponsor the Summer Reading Program.

Jerry Porter

The past month has been an extremely busy one. Summer reading has really been going well this summer. The Atlanta Area Rotary club is the official sponsor, but we also got a donation from Woodforest National Bank. Angela Autrey is the coordinator, and she is doing a great job.

Just three weeks after my 30th anniversary cruise to Alaska, I was blessed with a beautiful grand-daughter. Ella Kathleen was born five weeks prem-ature, but weighed in at 6 lbs. and 14 oz.! She has a few normal premature things going on, but I think she will work all of those out. I was able to take off a week to help my daugh-ter recover from her sur-gery and also managed to get in a few snuggles. She will call me Sugar. Of course I have to add a pic-ture of her here.

Computer classes will resume in the fall, and a special class will be at the Senior Citizen’s Center. More information about that will come at a later date. We are always trying

to meet the needs of our patrons, and patrons should contact us with any ideas for books, programs, or meetings we should add.

This is budget time, so pray that the city manager and council look favorably at the budget I have sub-mitted. We are including requests for money to up-date the Jesse Miles Brooks Conference Room. We do have some grant money for that purpose and just need to maximize the impact of that grant money with the addition of some city budget money. Again, if you have sugges-tions or want to volunteer to be involved in that pro-ject, just let us know.

The Littles Give a Party What could be more exciting than having a “double” celebration? John L Peterson writes a story of his literary family, the Littles about when the family decided to plan a birthday party ...AND... a 4th of July party for Granny Little. But the problem for the youngsters of the family is that it’s a surprise party, so they can’t tell Granny. The story is augmented with illustrations by Roberta C. Clark and the cover is illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers. This will be an enjoy-able book to read to your child or grandchild on July 4th!

The resources housed in the up-per floor are property of the Atlanta Public Library, but are maintained by both the Cass County Family His-tory Center (CCFHC) and the Cass County Genealogy Society (CCGS). They are available for research, but can NOT be checked out!

The Cass County Gene-alogical Society will meet Tuesday, July 10th, 6:30 p.m., at the Horne Enter-prise Building, Pinecrest Drive at South Louise, At-lanta, Texas.

Our guest speaker will be a long-time member of CCGS, Randy Brock, who will be sharing his Brock Family history, and history of the Bryans Mills area. For further infor-mation, call 903-796-4456, or 903-796-6662.

We would like to let our members and the public know that we have a section of Quarterly Exchanges displayed in the Genealogical Section of the Library. These are Quarterly or Semi-Annual publications of other ge-nealogical societies in other Texas Counties and other states. One can also find these publications that are bound by volumes on the shelves in that county or state area, while loose ones are located on the bottom shelves of that respective state. Newly re-ceived Quarterlies are first filed in the metal wall holder on the other side of the wall that is at the top of the stairs.

After a certain period of time, we remove them and file these in the state which they cover. Quarterlies consist of stories of families, businesses, schools, churches, land rec-ords, deeds, wills, etc.

One will also find queries about what they are research-ing, inquiring about infor-mation from other states, espe-cially ancestors who have mi-grated westward. Occasional-ly, we will have Genealogical Societies who will exchange books they published with the books we publish. We register and file these on the shelves.
