Center Supervisor's MessageAs August progresses, much of the Milwaukie Center’s staff effort will be put towards our second annual Clackamas County On Tap and Uncorked. This event is a major fundraiser for the Milwaukie Center’s Meals on Wheels program and also

acts as a way to highlight the beautiful Sara Hite Memorial Rose Garden. It is a collaboration of the Friends of the Milwaukie Center and the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District. Working in partnership helps give this event the resources to really stand out as a total community event. If you have never visited the rose garden, it is a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with friends and family while supporting a great cause. If you like wine, beer or spirits, there will be plenty to choose from, and if you don’t, it will still be a warm and celebratory atmosphere to enjoy with food carts and live music. This second year should be a lot of fun. I hope to see you there on September 8!

eVOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Now that summer is over, school shopping is almost finished, and the kids will be back in school, it’s time to start thinking about volunteering at the Milwaukie Center. Take a moment to read the list of our present volunteer opportunities, and who knows, you just might see something of interest. Contact Judith Kallio, Volunteer Coordinator, (503) 794 8034, and she will advise you of any updates.

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.

– Dalai Lama

The Friends wrote checks to various departments at the Milwaukie Center for $24,000. Nutrition and Transportation each received $5,000, Human Services received $12,000 and A Place at the Center received $2,000. These funds are in addition to $2,000 in Class Scholarships, $2,000 for the Client Assistance Fund, $1,000 for the Handyman Fund, $4,000 for Under 60 Meals-on-Wheels support and over $25,000 in newsletter support. There are many other things the Friends contribute to in order to help the Milwaukie Center provide the best programs and services possible. We owe it all to our very generous supporters, we simply couldn’t do it without you!

HONORING THEIR MEMORY

When a loved one has been lost, one way to honor their memory is through a gift to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center Endowment Fund. Many times family members and friends are never quite sure what to do, but would like to make a gesture of respect. Let them know about donations in your loved one’s name to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center. We will acknowledge the donation and notify family members of the gift. Call the Friends office for more information.

FALL CLASSESFall classes will be online August 7. Online registration for NCPRD will open Tuesday, August 14. For non-residents, registration will be open Tuesday, August 21. Schedules are available in the lobby of the Milwaukie Center. If you are interested in signing up for Tai Chi Beginner, Complete Conditioning, Functional Fitness, Yoga (Saturday), Tiny Tots Pre-Ballet and Complete Conditioning, you may want to sign up for the class on registration day or soon afterwards; these classes fill quickly. If you want to try a class before signing up, you are welcome to try the class during the summer term. Most classes will end the third or fourth week of August. Please check the summer schedule or call (503) 794-8092.

Save time for staff, instructors and students. CCC requires that we have 10 or more students enrolled a week before class begins in order for the class to run. If you receive a call a week before a class begins, then we are calling to let you know class has been canceled. We try calling two weeks before to give time to sign up. However, if you can sign up at least three weeks before class begins, then you can save staff time from making these phone calls.

Steve Rose, ukulele instructor

On Tuesday, June 19, the Oregon Department of Revenue (DOR) ruled that the City of Happy Valley, Oregon did not follow appropriate state law in withdrawing from the North Clackamas Parks & Recreation District.

The ruling invalidates the previous boundary change, meaning that Happy Valley remains part of NCPRD.

If you are a Happy Valley resident who has already registered for summer programs at the Milwaukie Center that start after 7/1 using the out-of-district rates, you will receive a refund for the difference between that and the in-district rate. We will be contacting all Happy Valley residents who have registered with more details. For more information, please visit ncprd.com/happyvalley.

NUTRITIONIST ALISON’S HEALTHY EATING TIPS

One thing I love most about summer is the availability of fresh herbs at a reasonable cost. My all-time favorite is basil, which is great, because it is so dang nutritious!

Basil is a rich source of vitamin A, good for eye health and immunity. It also has vitamins K1, C and folate. Basil stimulates digestion, reduces flatulence, and kills intestinal parasites. And it is rich in magnesium, a mineral which helps muscles relax.

O. basilicum may also be useful in lowering risk of Alzheimer’s disease! Acetylcholine (ACh) is a neurotransmitter that helps information to be processed in the brain. Patients with Alzheimer’s have lower levels of ACh. The antioxidant effects of basil have been shown to help maintain ACh levels.

An easy way to add fresh basil to your diet is to chop fresh leaves and toss them into a salad, or on top of almost any dish! And then of course, there is nothing like a fresh batch of pesto! Enjoy summer, and the sweet, peppery taste of fresh basil.

QUILTERS & CRAFTERS!Donate materials and craft items for the next quilt show sale! Year round, the quilt committee receives, sorts, measures, folds and takes care of donations to the Center so they can be sold at the sale.

We need your donations of material and craft items, particularly cotton and cotton blend fabrics.

This last year, we raised over $10,000 for programs and services at the Center! Just drop your donations off at the Friends office; it’s tax deductible!

FIT TIPS WITH HERTA

The Benefits of Exercise for Cancer Patients

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, currently in treatment, or on the “other” side trying to find your new normal, everyone can benefit from exercise. Battling cancer and the treatments that follow can take their toll . . . emotionally, psychologically, and especially physically. Side effects include fatigue, depression, loss of energy, loss of appetite, sleep disruptions and a feeling of a loss of control over your own body.

Exercise, even the smallest amounts, can have great positive effects for the entire body. Benefits include increased blood flow which means increased amounts of oxygen being circulated, the release of endorphins which are natural “pick-me-ups” and can improve mood, better sleep, more energy, an increase in appetite and less stress.

How do you know what’s right for you? Consult your physician first, but most individuals should be able to start with a short, slow walk, even if it’s just 5-10 minutes at a time. Focus on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), getting up and down safely, balancing, and flexibility.

INTRODUCING A NEW TEACHER! JOE MACCA

Joe Macca was born in Portland, Oregon in 1970. He received his BA in Film from the University of Oregon in 1992, followed by his MFA in Painting from Portland State University in 1999. His work has been featured in solo and group shows across the country and in Portland, including a 2012 solo show at Marylhurst’s Art Gym, which presented both his pristine colorfield abstractions and postcards and ephemera that explored more of the internal complexities of living and being an artist in the 21st century. Macca’s work has been featured in New American Paintings, Artweek, The Oregonian, and the Portland Mercury. Joe currently teaches Drawing and Painting at Portland Community College and Clark College.

NEW! Drawing Anything you see you can draw, even beginners can become true artists! Using a step-by-step approach, you can learn the “tools of seeing” and trick your brain into only seeing in terms of shapes, textures or colors. Projects include drawing objects, still life and working from photographs. The objective is acquiring a knowledge of the strategies for successful observational drawing, gaining a working knowledge of the vocabulary of drawing, and familiarizing yourself with the materials of drawing. (No class Nov. 12) Fee: $70 (62+ $53) Time/Date: 2-4 p.m. M 10/1-11/19

Herta McClenahan is an ACE-certified Personal Trainer, Orthopedic Exercise Specialist and Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist.
