Wednesday November 28, 2018 From Sue Election Day Stall On Saturday we had loads of Grade 2 parents enthusiastically supporting our Election Day sausage sizzle and cake stall. Some were particularly vocal in spruiking the quality of our sausages, egg and bacon rolls and scrumptious cakes to voters and anyone passing in Hampton Street. Their enthusiasm was infectious because we sold out of cakes shortly after 1pm and sausages shortly after 2pm. For those of us who have sold a sausage on election days before; it was patently obvious that the numbers were down at many polling booths because a large number chose to vote prior to the Saturday. Despite small numbers voting at Hampton than in previous years, we managed to generate a profit of over $3,000 on the day. I extend my gratitude to the numerous mums and dads who gave up their time to support our school. We received 180 cakes and my goodness, these looked enticing! Thank you to the 180 chefs who took the time to bake for our school. Special thanks go to Sally Armstrong who capably and efficiently organised this event; Sally had considerable assistance from: Natalie Paszko, Maria Morfis, Melissa da Silveira, Louise Booker, Sophie Graves and Amanda Lucock, many of whom arrived before 7am to help set up and a number were still at school at 4.30pm cleaning up! Then on the day a team of helpers included: Sue Phillips, Kim Phillips, Sally Stewart, Pauline Kinnaird, Celina Thickins, Traci Cenedese, Richard Beare, Chris Sando, Martin Hastwell, Danny Donbavand, Alex Kelsey, Greg Bentley, Caroline and Dave Smith, Andrew Atchison, Jeanette Boyd-Turner, Ty Halse, Predrag Trajkovic, Matt da Silveira, Rodrigo Cervantes, Jo Kwok, Lara Tascone, Sally Foreman, Abbie Cooke, Jess Lawrence, Emily Beasley, Skye Fixe and Lowa Paszko. Special thanks to our very committed student workforce on the day: Jake Fix, Niko White, Connie Kinnaird, Liam Kinnaird, Max Smith, Alice Boyd-Turner, Amelie Taylor, Leila Halse, Bianca Sando, Tam Sando and Wes Sando. These children offered to do whatever was needed and their enthusiasm was infectious. Many thanks also to our fantastic school support team: Kirsty Reynolds, Tino Karras, Nicole St Leon, Andrea Maglio and Cathy McLorinan. We gratefully acknowledge the support of these wonderful local businesses: Bakers Delight Hampton, 5 Ways Food Service, Quality Meats Hampton Street, Woolworths Hampton, South City Meats and Bendigo Bank Sandringham. Please pay them a visit to say thanks. This was a wonderful community effort with an industrious team who produced a great outcome!

Friendship Captain Mitch Nolan Last night Mitch Nolan from 6A addressed the Hampton Rotary Club on his role as friendship captain at Hampton Primary this year. Mitch presented an extremely well prepared speech and commented on a number of highlights for him personally including: feeling pride in his initial appointment as captain, he was surprised to be elected by his peers gaining confidence in addressing whole school assemblies feeling satisfaction in being able to help children sort out disputes

having good friends who supported me as Friendship Captain being able to help children get into a happy mood having children in the yard approach him to say hello at lunchtimes enjoying acknowledging individual children at assemblies who have been enacting school

norms Choreography Competition Last Friday we had our school based competition for the Choreography competition in the BER building which was jam packed with children wanting to savour every bit of excitement. This event always arouses much interest and competition amongst the teams. Historically choreography and dance have been very popular at Hampton for a number of years. All teams performed confidently and tried very hard to dance in synchrony. The three assessment categories included: creativity with choreography the skill and technique with the dancing presentation - including the costumes, makeup.

Strong interest was generated at the Year 5 and 6 level with three teams showcasing their talents and all were very impressive. Well done to: Team 1: Grace Mitchell, Charlotte Christie, Lola Davis, Killian Greenan, Olivia Parker,

Noa Staunton, Sophia Quinn, Loa Hostein, Juliette Moss, Lily Jones and Jess Hart

Team 2: Amy Perara, Annabel Perara and Sadie Ockerby Team 3: Ella Henwood, Zoe Hewlett, Bianca Stewart and Sarah St John The Grade 3 and 4 teams included: Team 1: Tam Sando, Audrey Davis, Betty Reed, Connie Gelso, Isi Reith, Frankie Steele

and Evan Crowe Team 2: Jessica Lopez, Lucille Tindall, Zahra Jacobs and Willow Hunt In addition our younger teams were similarly enthusiastic and talented: Team 1: Sophie Reith, Josie Hussey, Emmerson Kokken, Willow O’Meara, Libby

Watkin, Ned Westacott, Noah Fahey, Izzi Bokan, Ingrid Monaghan and Adalynn Booysen

Team 2: Emily Wei, Angela Wei, Phoebe Marcus and Stephanie Phillips

I extend my congratulations to all dancers who entered the competition and wish the section winners the best of luck at the interschool competition which will held on Friday 7 December at 1pm in the quadrangle, weather permitting. Assembly Well done to 2D who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday and to the Year 3s who led the singing of ‘One Song’ which the audience enthusiastically embraced. The lyrics for this song are terrific and focus on the power of a united front and sharing the load. This song was inspiring. Academic Excellence Congratulations go the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly yesterday: Kiara Bowd from 3E for displaying an inquiring mind and a capacity to think logically,

analyse information and consider possibilities, she enjoys a challenge and will occasionally approach a problem from a different perspective; her results in literacy and numeracy are outstanding

Sebastien Lynch from 3E for displaying a motivated and determined approach to his learning where he relishes a challenge; his results in literacy and numeracy are outstanding

Gideon Ziesing in 5B for displaying considerable ability and confidence in working in all areas of mathematics where his logical thinking and enjoyment of a challenge produce very impressive results

Charlotte Grace in 5B for consistently displaying a positive approach to school and a desire to improve; her to capacity to apply critical and creative thinking skills are evident in her excellent results in all areas of literacy.

Kindergarten Visits We have been visiting kindergartens recently to discuss children who will be commencing at Hamp-ton in Foundation next year. We currently have 91 children enrolled; they come from 22 different kindergartens. Our main feeder kindergartens are those relatively close to the school - Holy Trinity and Helen Paul. It is helpful for our staff to see the children in their familiar settings at kindergarten and to discuss specific needs, behaviour and friendships with the directors respectively. We have conducted 6 transition sessions already and have 2 more planned for December with the meet the teacher and grade session on the 11 December and the buddy picnic on the 13 December. The in-formation and observations greatly assist with the allocation of children to 2019 grades. Artistic Talent on Show

The art work shown above showcases the artistic talents of your Year 6s who used textiles to create characters and scenes from their recent production of The Lion King Jnr. The process involved children needling wool into the felt; this was quite a tedious task although it resulted in a subtle and very effective 3D perspective. Their use of colour, perspective and facial expressions absolutely confirm the obvious talent of our students! Thanks to Danni Peebles, one of our art teachers who led this activity and inspired the children to use felt and wool as a medium. Student Citizenship Award We have recently been invited to participate in the 2018 Goldstein Medal civics program to recognise and celebrate the contribution young leaders make to our community and encourages participation by others.

A Goldstein Medal will be awarded to one student at our school who: is in their penultimate year at the school demonstrates leadership amongst their peers exhibits in their behaviour a commitment to the ethos of the school demonstrates excellence in attitude and achievement is a strong and consistent participant in school and community activity and exhibits an awareness of others and their needs. Each student who is awarded a Goldstein Medal will receive an individual Goldstein Medal (lapel badge which can be worn on their uniform for the following year) and a book prize. A perpetual Honours Board displaying the engraved name of each year’s successful recipient will be provided to our school. Our teachers are currently considering worthy recipients for this award. It will be presented on Tuesday 18 December at the school assembly. Dad’s Camp Our dads and their children survived the dads and kids camp last weekend with 68 dads and 100 kids attending. The enthusiasm and joy resulting from 2.5 days away from home were not diminished by the rain and cooler temperatures. Preliminary feedback indicated that everyone had a ball and all and sundry have already signed up for next year’s camp! There were a couple of minor injuries and sickies but overall, everything was sorted with a minimum of fuss. One particular highlight was the connections made between dads and dads, dads and kids and of course kids and kids across all year levels! The organiser of this camp, Mark Alexander, father of Lachie in FC, confirmed that the highlights were numerous and included: dads and kids soccer game won by the kids - but dads were severely outnumbered about 70

kids to 30 dads! The bonfire on Saturday night with marshmallows and science experiments (all inert substance camp staff prepping all food and cooking for us all dads pitching in on duty groups leaving camp cleaner on departure than it was on arrival funds raised which he hopes will be over $1,000 the general vibe of seeing and hearing kids laughing and squealing ALL weekend and dads

with a smile on their face having a ball and this is despite miserable weather! Huge thanks go to Mark for his energy, time devoted to organisation and promotion of the camp and his passion for connecting dads with their kids.

Mandarin News Last Saturday, there were eleven Hampton School students who sat the International Chinese Language Test for Young Learners (YCT). Five of them attended Level 1 test and six attended Level 2 test. The YCT test is for students who learn Mandarin at a young age to measure their achievement. The test has been running for some years in Australia, but Hampton Primary School is the first state school to offer this examination for primary students. The majority of our students who sat in the Level 1 and Level 2 tests have only been learning Mandarin in our school program; we do have a couple of students who participate in additional, out of school hours Mandarin

sessions. I am pleased to see the effort our students have devoted to learning the Chinese language. Well done to our students who sat the exam and to Jeffic and Yi for the administration.

Academic Excellence Today I received an email from the parents of two students who attended Hampton Primary some time ago. Both students were determined to do their best in the classroom and on the sporting field. Their eldest boy Liam Kruger has now completed Year 12 at Melbourne High School with distinction. He recently received the Melbourne High School Diploma Summa Cum Laude at their Speech night, as well as the Rugby Award and the Sports Champion Award. Liam is pictured on the left with the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau presenting his diploma.

This is a very great honour for Liam, I extend my congratulations to him! Sue Knight Principal

From John Mental Health and Movember As you would be aware from Sue’s comments last week our Hampton community has been heavily affected by mental health issues with the suicide deaths of three men this year. Mental health and suicide can be a confronting topic and presents challenges to all of us. However with suicide being the leading cause of deaths in men aged between 15 and 44 it is an issue we cannot avoid for the men and dads in our lives now or for the men and women our children will become. As was said at the most recent funeral I attended last week, ‘…mental health is everyone’s issue’. As previously mentioned the success of events like the Dads’ Club and the weekend camp can play a vital role in supporting men and create opportunities to come together to relax, talk, share and have fun. We encourage you to support these events for our community and particularly for those men it can help connect and support – often we can’t tell who needs that support. Another way to support mental health is to raise funds to support awareness and treatment of mental health issues. This month you would have seen many of the male staff adding to their facial hair with a moustache for Movember. As this month of awareness and support finishes I would like to offer the opportunity to our community to support men’s mental health by donating to the Hampton MoBros at the link below. This is not a request and comes with no expectation but is just an opportunity to support a worthy cause. https://moteam.co/hampton-ps-mobros?mc=1

Child Safe Standards The Child Safe standards are a part of the compulsory documentation that all organisations in Victoria that provide services or facilities for children are required to have to ensure that the safety of children is promoted, child abuse is prevented and allegations of child abuse are properly responded to. In coming weeks I will be sharing different documents that highlight what Hampton is doing to respond to support students and the community in this important area. This week is our focus in on our ‘Statement of Commitment to Child Safety’ …

Statement of Commitment to Child Safety Hampton Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Our school community recognises the importance of, and responsibility for, ensuring our school is a safe, supportive and enriching environment which fosters the respect and dignity and self-esteem of children and young people, and enables them to learn and thrive in their development. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity while keeping child safety paramount. We ensure that the children and young people at our school feel empowered and have every opportunity to have their voice heard in decisions that affect their lives. Particular attention is paid to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children and children from culturally and or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as the safety of children with a disability. Hampton Primary School has zero tolerance of child abuse. Every person involved in Hampton Primary School has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role they play, individually and collectively, to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and young people is at the forefront of all they do and every decision they make. The Student Wellbeing Team leads the community in relation to child safety at school. The Assistant Principal and the Principal are the child safety leaders. We value the input from families and carers in regard to child safety and the associated importance of ensuring all lines of communication are open at all times. The Assistant Principal and Principal will ensure there is written guidance available on appropriate conduct and behaviour towards children. Hampton Primary takes a preventative, proactive and participatory approach to child safety. We work together to empower the children in our school to participate in decisions which affect their lives. We foster a culture of openness that supports everyone to safely disclose risks of harm to children and where children feel comfortable to raise any issues. All staff will complete a range of training and professional learning sessions annually so that they feel able to report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly including Mandatory Reporting, Child Safe Standards and Safe Schools. The school aims to ensure only the most suitable people will work with children, including teaching staff, education support staff, administrative staff, other employees and parent and community volunteers. The administrative staff check to ensure that all volunteers, including parents have a Working With Children Check ( exceptions include when parents are volunteering at working bees, school carnivals and fundraisers) and that the Working With Children Check register is maintained. As a community, our actions will ensure that all the children in our care feel safe. We will support all members of the Hampton Primary School community to feel empowered to report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to the appropriate authorities. Where the safety and wellbeing of children is at risk, we will share information appropriately and lawfully with other organisations as required.

Tech Talk with Tim

We were extremely disappointed to have to postpone our student, staff and parent sessions with cyber expert, Susan McLean last Wednesday. Unfortunately Susan had to attend to some personal circumstances and was unable to join us for any part of the day. This was beyond our control but we are working hard with Susan to find a new date to reschedule. We will communicate this to our community as soon as this date is confirmed. What do our Year 4, 5 and 6 students think of the BYO iPad Program? Since the inception of the 1:1 BYO iPad Program at Hampton Primary School in 2014 we have surveyed our students each year to review the program and identify potential improvements for the next year. Here is a snapshot of our student survey from this year:

BAYCISS ANNUALCHRISTMAS APPEAL

This Christmas we will be supporting BayCISS to make everyone’s Christmas a little bit brighter! BayCISS (Bayside Community Information and Support Service Inc), is a not-for-profit community

organisation that has been established for nearly 40 years. Their Community Information Centres, have professionally trained volunteers that assist people with community information, support, advocacy and referral services. Their Hampton East Centre also has

a counselling service and a legal advice program. Donated Goods

BayCISS is always seeking donations of the following goods: Non-perishable and non-date expired groceries Hygiene items Baby goods such as nappies and formula Toys and gifts for families in need

If you would like to donate an item towards our Toy & Food Drive it can be dropped off at our main school office up until Friday 14th December.

We thank you in advance for your kind donation! Junior School Council HPS 2018

Here are some guidelines to help assist with your Christmas giving: Gifts:

• Please do not wrap gifts. This allows us to easily identify appropriate gifts for our service users.

Feel free to include some wrapping paper or a gift bag for them to use.

• Please only donate new items. Sadly, the gift you donate may be the only present someone

receives this Christmas. We know Christmas isn’t only about receiving gifts, but this is one way we

can help families feel special.

• We accept gift vouchers! Gift vouchers mean a parent/guardian who is struggling doesn’t miss

out on the joy of purchasing a gift for their child. Gift vouchers are also an ideal gift for teenagers.

• Each year we are overwhelmed with gifts for younger children, but always run out of gifts

suitable for teenagers and parents. Please consider these older age groups when purchasing gifts.

Groceries:

• Where appropriate please ensure items have long expiry dates and are non-perishable

• Supermarket Gift Vouchers make a great addition to food hampers, allowing the recipient to

purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and meat at Christmas:

• Think Christmas: people will be receiving these packages as gifts. Where possible, donate

brand-name products and include some special items to help people celebrate on Christmas Day.

• Consider packing your groceries into a washing basket, reusable shopping bag or laundry

bucket that can be reused by the recipient.

• Consider providing choices that suit families with young children, people with allergies, the

elderly or newcomers to Australia.

GARAGE SPACE URGENTLY WANTED Hi All, My name is Frank Hajncl and you may well know me from around the school. My association with HPS is long-standing. Having been a student here myself, my three (now grown) children also came through the HPS system. I've worked on Lost Property for the school for the past 15 or so years, lend my dulcet tones to the microphone on school athletic days and help out some Grade Three/Four kids with reading and writing comprehension. That's me. Throughout this year, I've somehow acquired a couple of classic cars - a 1929 Plymouth and a 1970 Cadillac Coupe Deville. I'm now in a bit of a quandary as I don't have adequate storage space, with only a carport on my property. Is there anyone out there in HPS land who has a large garage with a spare car space or two and who would be willing to come to some arrangement with me? Ease of access and proximity would obviously be key elements to consider. As a side issue (not pressing, of course), the Caddy has an eight-track player and it would be great to get hold of some cartridges to play in it. If anyone has any lying around doing nothing, please let me know. If you could help me out with either of these issues, please contact me on 0497 554 542 - leave a message if I don't answer. Awaiting your call with bated breath. Frank Hajncl
