Here’s your chance to see the White House in its holiday finest when we tour 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Wednesday, Dec. 15. We’ll depart from the Village Center at 9:45 a.m. and should return by 1 p.m. Sign-ups for residents and one guest begin immediately at the Village Center. When signing up, attendees must provide name, date of birth, social security number and country of origin. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, Dec. 7 — no exceptions. Nonresidents may sign up Dec. 4. On the day of the tour, attendees will be required to present photo identification with information exactly matching the name previ- ously submitted for clearance. A complete list of prohibited items will be available at the Village Center. Umbrellas, wallets, cell phones and car keys are per- mitted. All persons entering the White House will be screened through a security process. The cost of the trip is $12 per person and includes transportation and gratuity. White House tours are subject to last minute cancella- tion. There are 50 spaces available.

Get in the holiday spirit withthe RockettesThere is nothing like the holidays in New York, and afew tickets remain for the trip to see the Radio CityChristmas Spectacular on Monday, Dec. 6.

This magical show stars the world famous RadioCity Rockettes, who dazzle audiences with routineslike “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” The majesticLiving Nativity and Santa’s exciting 3-D sleigh rideare just two more scenes in America’s favoriteChristmas show.

We will leave the Village Center at 7:30 a.m. andarrive in New York in plenty of time to have lunch (askus for restaurant suggestions) and admire the deco-rated Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. We’ll leaveimmediately after the show and stop for a dinner onthe way home (lunch and dinner are on your own). Weshould return home by 9 p.m.

The cost of the trip is $139, which includes a ticketin the first mezzanine (there is an elevator), transporta-tion, and all gratuities. Children over the age of five arewelcome, accompanied by a parent or grandparent.

Don’t miss ‘Carousel!’Join us for a day in the country on Thursday, Dec. 16,when we journey out to Olney for lunch at the Inn atBrookeville Farms and a matinee performance ofRodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel.”

Choose (when you sign up) an entrée: grilled sirloinsteak sandwich with mushroom-thyme saute, hickorysmoked chicken breast on an Asiago roll, or roasted redpepper and goat cheese pizza. First course will be amixed green salad and dessert will be a frozen choco-late bourbon souffle.

Following lunch, we’ll drive to the Olney Theatre toenjoy “Carousel,” which features classics like “If ILoved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and“You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

We will leave the Village Center at 11:15 a.m. andreturn by 5:30 p.m. The cost is $79, which includeslunch, a discounted seat in the Orchestra, transporta-tion, and all gratuities.

Mr. Pitch will recount the flight of President Madison,the capture and torching of the White House and theCapitol, the epic defense of Fort McHenry, the birth of thenational anthem, and the American victory at New Orleans.

Recipient of the Maryland Historical Society’s BookPrize for his book, The Burning of Washington: The BritishInvasion of 1814, Mr. Pitch is invited annually to give aspeech at Fort McHenry on the anniversary of FrancisScott Key writing the national anthem, and has beenfeatured on the History Channel.

Stories of a Secret Service AgentSpecial Agent Jim Gallagher will discuss his life in lawenforcement — as a detective, Secret Service Agentand Federal Air Marshal in the Department of Home-land Security — at the Village Center on Tuesday,Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Gallagher was assigned to the White HouseDetail during the Reagan and George H. Bush adminis-trations. During this time, he spent a year on theBarbara Bush First Lady Detail. He was also the secu-rity detail leader for many world leaders visiting theUnited States, including Arial Sharon of Israel, Presi-dent Karzai of Iran, King Abdullah II of Jordan, PrimeMinster Tony Blair of the United Kingdom and thePrime Minister and President of Ireland.

Senior Artists Alliance to exhibitthis month in Friendship GallerySenior Artists Alliance is a non-profit organization dedi-cated to promoting artists sixty years old and older. Thisgroup will exhibit in the Friendship Gallery during themonth of December.

The Alliance was founded to give senior artists opportu-nities to exhibit their work professionally, provide a forumfor artists to exchange informationand experiences, develop opportuni-ties for marketing, and provideeducational meetings and specialinterest groups.

The show runs from Dec. 2 toDec. 30. pieces, and their own originalworks.

Wednesday, Dec. 15 – BeltwayBrass — The Beltway Brass Quin-tet is a project group led byZachary Smith of the nationallyacclaimed Dixie Power Trio. Itsmembers reside in the Washington,D.C., area and quite frequentlyspend hours slogging aroundD.C.’s infamous beltway. It was onthis stretch of highway that theidea for the Beltway Brass wasconceived in 2003. The repertoirefor the quintet is unusual in itsemphasis on 20th century jazzharmonies and stylings. Zachary

Smith has written almost all of thearrangements for the group,manyof which can be heard on their firstCD, Holiday Drive.

Wednesday, Dec. 22 – FridayMorning Music Club- Thisconcert will feature the talents ofstudent performers Monica We,piano; Debra Stanley, soprano;Seyeon Ahn, piano; and GrayDickerson, violin.

Battling the blues:depression and the holidaysDepression affects one in ten of us and may be more common in seniors experi-encing a variety of losses. The holidays often worsen problems with depres-sion. Two programs at the Village Center this month are designed to help.

On Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m., Barbara Osbourne of the behav-ioral health department at Suburban Hospital will talk about how todistinguish clinical depression from just a bad day. She will also discussnew medications and their effectiveness and give tips on dealing with theseasonal festivities.

The following week on Wednesday, Dec. 15, free depression screen-ings for anyone over the age of sixty will be given at the Village Center.Donna Chavers, Director of Senior Services at the Affiliated Santé Group,will lead an interactive discussion about depression at 1 p.m. Beginning at2 p.m., she will privately screen individuals using an assessment tool thatinvolves answering about ten simple questions and will take from five tothirty minutes per person.

Appointments are not necessary for the screenings. Registration isrequested, but not required, for both programs.

Youth Orchestra performsSeasonal SoundsCelebrate the holidays with an afternoon concert by theGrace Methodist Church Youth Orchestra on Satur-day, Dec. 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the VillageCenter. Among the pieces to be performed are “Faith ofOur Fathers,” the “Theme from E.T.”, and Handel’s“Hallelujah.”

The Red Hat SocietyA Washington Post Weekend story recently described theRed Hat Society as “senior women having play dates”and a “unique women’s movement that’s spreadingfaster than lemon curd on scones!”

The next gathering of the Friendship Heights RedHats will be a holiday party Monday, Dec. 13, at 1p.m. at the Village Center. Musician Woody Seybertwill highlight great female singers, including Ma Rainey,Bessie Smith, and Connie Boswell. Woody was asaxophonist during the Big Band era and an Air Forcemusician during WWII. His talk will be followed by atea party with festive food and frivolity.

Flu shots are not the only wayto prevent the fluIf you didn’t get a flu shot, you can still protect your-self and others from influenza this winter. Below aresome simple tips from the Department of Health andHuman Services and the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention:

• Wash your hands often• Avoid close contact with people who are sick and

stay at home if you are sick• Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing- teach

children to do the same• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth• Get plenty of sleep and take daily walks

Remember to drink plenty of water and eat healthyfoods. Dr. Linda Smith, nutritionist for IONA SeniorServices, suggests eating more of the foods that containantioxidants to boost your immune system. These includecitrus and cabbage for Vitamin C, olive oil and salmonfor Omega fats, carrots, broccoli and bell peppers forBeta carotene. A recent article in The Washington PostHealth advises eating almonds, peanut butter, avocadosand sunflower seeds for Vitamin E and yogurt for“friendly” bacteria. In addition to daily 30- to 45-minutewalks, the article also recommends practicing Tai Chi.

Cafe Muse presents…This month’s Café Muse, on Thursday, Dec. 16, at7:30 p.m., presents a Gargoyle magazine reading, hostedby Richard Peabody, with Rose Solari and Alan Spears.

Richard Peabody is the editor of Gargoyle Magazine,as well as A Different Beat: Writings by Women of the BeatGeneration, and co-editor of Mondo Barbie, Conversationswith Gore Vidal (forthcoming 2005). Rose Solari’s newcollection of poems, Orpheus in the Park, is forthcomingin 2005. Her previous full-length collection, DifficultWeather, won Columbia Book Award. Alan Spears worksfor the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA)as an Associate Director for Diversity. His poetry hasappeared in Lit Wit, Potomac Review, and Gargoyle.

Classical guitar selections performed by MichaelDavis are presented each month at 7 p.m. Attendingpoets are invited to participate in an open readingthat concludes the Café Muse program. A sign-upsheet will be available at 7 p.m.
