Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.

Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in,

but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

Called and Gifted to be a Redeeming Community

Solidarity in the Mission of Christ Please welcome to our parish this weekend Father Beyuo Damian Kuukole, a priest of the Diocese of Damongo in North Ghana. Father Kuukole was ordained in June 2005 and served in St. Peter’s Parish, one of the poorest in his diocese. He started small faith communities there, sometimes beginning with just two or three members. During the rainy season he often traveled by canoe.

In 2007 he established a now flourishing Catholic junior high school before being transferred to serve in his regional seminary. In May of this year he completed a Masters Degree in Catholic School Leadership at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. His pastoral experience and education have prepared him for assisting his bishop in the work of organizing and

developing his diocese, only recently establish in February 1995. It is a predominantly rural diocese located in the poorest and most deprived area of his country. They are still facing the challenges of building the basic administrative structures and important institutions needed to carry out their primary mission of evangelization, peace building, and socio-economic development of the people.

There are about 500,000 people in his diocese of which about 5% are Catholic, though a large percent of the population - up to 80% - are very open to the work of evangelization. The challenges they face include:

A very young Catholic population with 60-70% still of school age

High illiteracy - 95% for women, 74% for men - poor educational facilities

A diverse population of twenty-three different ethnic groups

Rain fed subsistence farming is the mainstay of 90% of the population

The rapid growth of Islamic faith in the villages of the country

Our prayer and support helps the Diocese of Damongo with the education/faith formation of youth; the formation of evangelization agents, catechists, prayer leaders, priests, and religious; building schools, clinics, chapels, and clean water sources; and promoting peacebuilding, rural development, and coexistence of ethnic groups living together.

ANNUALLY EVERY PARISH participates in the Archdiocesan Mission Cooperation Plan designed to connect mission groups to parishes to speak about the work of our Church in other parts of the world. It’s a good reminder for us all that our Church is fundamentally a Mission Church.

This plan, an initiative of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith in St. Louis, helps us learn more about the missionary activity of our Catholic Church in the United States and around the world.

There are two great benefits for our Church when we do this. First, every parish is enriched and strengthened when parishioners learn about how other people and parishes are practicing their faith, often in difficult circumstances. Second, our spiritual and material solidarity with mission parishes around the world enables them to exist and to grow. It’s a two-way street! The mission sending and mission receiving character of a parish has long been considered an evidence of its health and well-being - its viability.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Eucharistic Prayers at the heart of our liturgy have a long history, beginning with the extemporaneous prayers of the early Christians. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out “Amen!” and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God’s mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider’s call to attention: “Lift up your hearts!” Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety.
