About the author: Andrew Clements

A. Read about Andrew Clements and answer the questions.

I was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1949 and lived in Oaklyn and Cherry Hill until the middle

of sixth grade. I didn’t think about being a writer at all back then, but I did love to read. I'm

certain there's a link between reading good books and becoming a writer. I read a lot of adven-

ture stories and mystery books, and I have wonderful memories of my mom reading picture

books aloud to me. I learned that words are powerful.

After college I was a teacher in Chicago for seven years. My favorite part of teaching was

getting to know all the people — kids and teachers and parents. I didn't know it at the time,

but that classroom experience helped my writing career, gave me many ideas and characters

and some funny, some scary, some heartbreaking stories.

In 1990 I got an idea about a kid who makes up a new word. The book became Frindle, and it was finally published in

1996, and it became popular and successful. Frindle got more than 35 awards. I wrote many other books about school

life too. I think one reason these books have been popular is that school is where we spend a lot of hours during im-

portant years of our lives. School matters, and it matters to all our lives.

Sometimes kids ask how I've been able to write so many books. The answer is simple: one word at a time. Which is

another good lesson, I think. You don't have to do everything at once. You don't have to know how every story is

going to end. You just have to take that next step, look for that next idea, write that next

word. And growing up, it's the same way. We just have to go to that next class, read that next

chapter, help that next person. You simply have to do that next good thing, and before you

know it, you're living a good life.

1. When and where was Andrew Clements born?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. What helped him a lot for his writing career?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. If you were an author what would you write about? Why?

____________________________________________________________________________________

4. “You don’t have to know everything at once… You just have to take that next step…” Do you agree with Andrew

Clement’s idea? Why, why not?
