    ACT ONE

    FADE IN:

    Were not sure where we are. But the lighting is dim. Romanticeven. Coltrane reverberates softly in the background. TWOCHAMPAGNE GLASSES slowly enter the frame. And suddenly...

    A FAMILIAR VOICE IS HEARD...

    PETER (O.S.)(softly)

    The glasses CLINK TOGETHER. Holy shit! ARE THEY ON A DATE?!?!

    PETER AND OLIVIAlook at each other. Eyes tender. A smile forms on his face...

Yousee, theyre staking out an apartment building. With all the hi-tech bells and whistles youd expect. Monitors showing everypossible angle. Computers amplifying and processing every sound.

    Speaking of knowledge, arent you eventhe slightest bit afraid of what you mightfind out about your neighbors tonight?

    INT. SURVEILLANCE TRUCK - CONTINUOUS

    Peter uses a TOUCHSCREEN MONITOR and starts raising the volumelevels of certain apartments. We begin to hear a medley ofconversations, arguments and finally ... a WOMAN MOANING.

    PETERI, for one, hope Mrs. Hamilton in304 is merely watching Cinemax.

    OLIVIAYou dont need to do that, Peter.

    PETERDo what?

    OLIVIA Try and lighten the mood. The mood isnot light. And its not gonna be.

    PETERBut its your birthday.

    Beat.

    OLIVIA Exactly.

    Peter looks at her. She looks down. Starts picking at her takeout.An open file sits next to her food. We see a FAMILY PORTRAIT...

    All is still. And quiet. Except for the rain. Eerie and constant.But suddenly, we hear a new sound. Its a CAR. Getting closer.

    INT. SURVEILLANCE TRUCK - CONTINUOUS

    Olivia is flipping through various angles on a monitor. Peter

    is looking through her case file. Looking at PHOTOS OF THEVARIOUS BIRTHDAY CARDS her Stepfather has sent over the years.

    PETERCan I ask you something? (off her nod) YourStepfather gives you a card every year onyour birthday, just so you know hes stillout there. So why havent you ever triedthis before? Just werent ready to face him?

    She lets that question hang for a beat.

    OLIVIA I face him every single day. I see his eyesin every sick twisted evil bastard Ive evercollared. But to answer your question...Yeah, he gives me a card every year. Butlast year, he delivered it. Last year...

    (rattled beat)he was here.

    As if right on cue...

    FBI FEILD AGENT #1Got a car rollin up. Its lights are off.

    GIACCHINO GETS TO WORK as Olivia and Peter RACE OVER TO THE

    AGENTS MONITOR... The car comes to a stop. The door slowly opens.A MAN in a hooded raincoat emerges with an pizza delivery bag.

    Olivia looks at VARIOUS ANGLES. Between the rain, the hood and theway his head is turned...you cant make out his face at all. TheMan enters a code on the keypad and rings up to an apartment.

    OLIVIA (shaking her head)

    Look at him. He knows where the camerasare. Knows which way to turn his head.

    Suddenly, as if he heard Olivia...THE MAN TURNS AROUND!! Like hesstaring right at her!!! But the shadow from his hood covers hisface. Its like a BLACK HOLE looking at her! She stares back.

    OLIVIA (CONT'D)Its him...ITS HIM!!!

    Just as everyone gets ready to pounce--

    PETER

    Wait! WAIT!! ITS JUST A KID!!!THE SCORE QUICKLY DEFLATES as we see...

    Hes been buzzed in and taken off his hood. Peters right. Itsnot him. Its just a TEENAGER. Delivering an actual pizza. Oliviaholsters her gun. Not happy about it. She wanted to use it.

    A SERIES OF DISSOLVES show time passing and patience wearingthin. Olivia looks at the clock on her phone. Its 12:45 am. Sheshakes her head and SLAMS THE PHONE DOWN ON THE COUNTER.

    PETER (CONT'D)I hate to say it and Im happy to stayhere all night if you want but...unlesshes going off Pacific time, doesntlook like its gonna happen this year.

    OLIVIA Why? Why would he suddenly stop?

    Peter looks down at the photos of her stepfather and all thevarious birthday cards hes given her over the years.

    PETER(at a loss)

    Maybe...maybe hes trying to change?

    INT. HOUSE - NIGHT

    Were face to face with OLIVIAS STEPFATHER, who is in fact...

    TRANSFORMING INTO SOMETHING MONSTROUS!!!

    Its dark so we dont get the best look at him. BUT HIS FACE ISCHANGING...BECOMING GAUNT. HIS SKIN DARKENING. HIS BONES SHIFTING.Whatever it is thats happening to him, its painful. HE SCREAMSOUT! In his scream, we can hear that EVEN HIS VOICE IS CHANGING!

    And then we hear...ANOTHER SCREAM IN THE MIX!! A WOMANS SCREAM.

    REVERSE ANGLE

    Its an ATTRACTIVE BRUNETTE in her early 20s screaming. Shescornered. Olivias Stepfather looks at the terrified woman...

    INT. OLIVIAS APARTMENT / BEDROOM - NIGHT

    Rain whips against the window. With a spooky ambience. We move tothe bed. Its empty. Sheets still tucked in. Clock reads 3:22 am.

    INT. OLIVIAS APARTMENT / LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

    We PUSH DOWN THE HALLWAY...

    The sound of typing leading our way. Olivia is at the couch. Onher laptop. Searching. For something. Anything . A cup of coffee,her gun and a Police scanner are currently accompanying her.

    Theres a SOUND AT THE WINDOW. Olivia SNAPS INTO ACTION! Gun inhand. But it was just some branches brushing against the window.She eases up. Starts turning back. Catches her reflection in the

    mirror. It stops her cold. Doesnt seem to like what she sees.

    THE COUCH - A LITTLE LATER

    Olivia is back at it. Whatever it is. Searching for something.But shes loosing steam. Her eyes getting heavy. Eventually, theyclose. Hands still on the keyboard. Silence. Save for the rhythmicpatter of rain drops. SUDDENLY, THERES A DING. Its a newmail ding . And it wakes Olivia up. More like JOLTS HER AWAKE. Shechecks the mail. Its a LINK. A link to a news article...

    About a woman murdered in Florida. Just when Olivia goes to closethe page, she CATCHES THE NAME OF THE VICTIM...Its an Olivia.Olivia Nevins . Well, thats a little creepy. But it gets better,or rather worse. She goes back to see who sent her the link.

    It was sent by Olivia Dunham. What? She goes to her sent box...And there it is. The email. IT WAS SENT FROM HER ACCOUNT. ThatWHAT goes to WTF? Olivia grabs her phone and dials...

    PETERYou dont think? (she does) You thinkyour stepfather did this? Look, Olivia, Iknow this guys a real bastard, but...Going from spousal abuse to cold bloodedkiller is a pretty steep slope.

    She looks at him. Thinks about it. Decides to deflect...

    She lets that land for a beat.

    Walter moves to the chalkboard. Reaches for the chalk. And--

    He puts the chalk back. And mutters to himself...

    CLOSER ON PETER

    Whos looking over the various printouts. Not looking convinced.

    PETERThe circumstances are different in allof the these...Rape, robbery...lookthis ones even an apparent suicide.

    He looks up. Olivia is glaring at him. Ice cold. Shes dead set.

    Peters clearly not convincing her of anything. He sees that.PETER (CONT'D)

    On the other hand, you carry a gunand I dont. Besides lets face it...voice of reason was never a role I

    was much suited for anyway...Walter,grab your gear. Damn if we dont gotus a fresh crime scene to disrupt.

    INT. CHEAP MOTEL / ROOM # 22 - CONTINUOUS

    Two eyes SNAP OPEN. Deep blue. Disoriented. Damaged...

    THE SKIN UNDER ONE OF THE EYES IS SWOLLEN. It seems to have anabnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. Yummy.

    WIDER TO REVEAL

    Its Olivias Stepfather. No longer monstrous. But covered inthe aftermath. His clothes splattered with blood. And ripped.

    Now that we have a better look at him... Hes early 60s. Intensefeatures. Was athletic. Think an out of shape Peter Weller.

    Hes lying on the ground. Looks hung-over. In fact, theres anALMOST EMPTY PILL BOTTLE next to him. He slowly gets up...

    AND CATCHES HIS REFLECTION IN THE MIRROR. Stops him cold. He takesout a phone. Wipes some blood off it. And dials a number. We seethat a few of his fingers are swollen with excess fluid as well .

    OLIVIAS STEPFATHER(into the phone)

    It happened again. I blacked out...Idont know...I need to see you...No, Ididnt do any drinking. It was...

    He continues to look at his reflection and there is a quick...FLASH OF HIS MONSTROUS SELF!!!

    OLIVIAS STEPFATHER (CONT'D)...something much worse.

    CLOSER ON WALTER AS HE BEGINS TO EXAMINE THE BODY

    Its hard to tell exactly what happened. But it aint pretty.BROYLES

    Her teeth were shattered, arms and legsbroken and her rib cage ripped wide open.

    OLIVIA I want this body transferred to Walterslab. And the other six Olivias as well.

    WALTERTell Agent Farnsworth to get out the extragurneys...Were gonna have a packed hous--

    Walter NOTICES SOMETHING. A trail of blood splatter on the carpet. He follows it over to THE COUCH...Shines a light underneath. Andfinds what appears to be...A BLOODY CHUNK OF FLESH.

    WALTER (CONT'D)There are bite marks and tooth fragments

    which appear to correspond with the damagedone to the victims mouth. It seems shetook a bite outta crime...literally.

    PETERWalter!?!

    OLIVIA She was leaving us DNA. His DNA.

    WALTERJudging from the state of the dermis andsubdermis, our killer appears to besuffering from severe pitting edema.

    PETER(off Olivias confusion)

    Excess fluid in his tissues.

    Walter looks at the skin. Red, hardened, scaly. Lost in thought...

    PETERIt sure as hell aint right.

    Who is staring at the woman. Her head shaking in disbelief.

    Another thought suddenly hits her...

    EXT. OLIVIA MYERS STREET - SECONDS LATER

    OLIVIA RUSHES OUTTA THE HOUSE!! RUNNING INTO A CLOSE-UP...

    OLIVIA (yelling out/looking around)

    She frantically SCANS THE STREET. And nearby houses. Nothing . BEATCOPS working the scene and BYSTANDERS understandably stare at her.

    INT. OLIVIA MYERSS HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

    Peter and Broyles exchange a concerned look. Watching herthrough the window. Even Walter looks on with concerned eyes.

    BACK TO SCENE

    Olivia has gotten her emotions in check. Takes one last look...

    INT. HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET - CONTINUOUS

    Were peaking through a pair of VERTICAL BLINDS. Pulled backslightly. Olivia is a few houses down. She heads back inside.

    WIDER STILL TO REVEAL

    THE HOMEOWNER. Male, mid-30s, and...NEWLY DECEASED. Hes sprawledacross the tiled floor. With blood pooling out of his body. TheStepfather moves away just as it was about to reach his shoes.

    INT. OLIVIA MYERSS HOUSE - SAME TIME

    Walter continues working the body. But SOMETHING ELSE has caughtPeters eyes. On the ground. He bends down to get it...

    as Olivia comes back inside. Seemingly with renewed vigor...

    OLIVIAI wanna know everything there is toknow about this woman. Somewhere theresa connection. Where she worked, workedout, bars, hangouts, where she ate...

    EXT. CITY STREET - LATER

    PAUL MORLEY, late 30s & lanky , is briskly walking down the block.Coffee in hand. He spins around at the SOUND OF SCREECHING TIRES!OLIVIAS CAR VIOLENTLY PULLS TO THE CURB!! Her door flies open...

    Paul looks rightly concerned as Olivia rapidly MOVES IN ON HIM.Her intensity instantly evident . Peter follows close behind.

    murdered. Were trying to find the guythat did it. And we need your help.

    (beat)So...have you ever seen this man?

    He hands the photo over. Paul looks it. And after a beat, nods.

    PAULYeah, Ive seen him before.

    Olivias eyes widen. Now, were gettin somewhere.PAUL (CONT'D)

    Olivia believes him. Sees hes still grabbling with the news.
