OVERVIEW

You know by now that the Fringe Hub is moving to Trades Hall this September, and you might very well have some questions for us... What are the spaces like? Will

they be the same as North Melbourne? Will the rooms look the same as they do during Comedy Festival? Will I still get discounts at the bar?! The short answers

are: excellent, no, no, and hell yes. The slightly longer answer is that we’re redesigning the way Trades Hall is activated as an arts space from the ground on up –

we’re taking on a lot of learnings from North Melbourne and from our friends at Comedy Festival, but the Fringe Hub at Trades Hall will be an entirely new space.

We have rooms designed for a broad range of artistic genres and presentation styles, and our lighting and audio rigs need to be more broadly fitted out to allow for

this.

That’s where this document comes in! Contained herein is a description of each room, an indicative list of the room equipment, and a draft layout of how we intend

to use each space. It is important to be aware that all equipment lists and room plans are subject to change, as half the spaces at Trades Hall are currently

construction sites, we won’t know the full capabilities of each room until we have full access after June. So, although we are relatively confident about things such

as the listed capacities for these spaces, they may fluctuate slightly depending on anything from the restoration works affecting room dimensions slightly, to the

type of chairs we are able to bring in.

One thing we can say for certain is that while each room has different stage dimensions, capacities and tech rigs, the way they all run is the same:

• Every room hire includes:

o A room technician for your season, and broader support from a venue production team

o Box Office

o Front of House

o Risk management consultancy and sign-off through Coleby Consultancy

o Potential to be part of Hub ticket deals (these are TBC, and will be opt-in if you want to join up to market your shows together)

• Each room hire costs:

o 30% of your gross box office (please see Hub Info Pack for details), with a low minimum nightly hire rate

o $150 as a one-off fee for your three-hour tech run (potential for longer tech runs at an additional $50 per hour pending availability of your tech)

VERY IMPORTANT:

This document tells you about the spaces, but it is designed to be read in conjunction with the Hub Information Pack to give you a full picture of the Hub and allow

you to put in a proper EOI. Please don’t go ahead and fill in the Fringe Hub EOI form until you have read both this document and the Hub Information Pack.

TOY LIBRARY

Our smallest venue, with a basic set-up. Best suited to stand-up comedy or solo performances without much movement. Some sound bleed from sharing a wall

with the Fringe Hub social space. Very much like our old Parlour Room venue – a nice tight space for those who don’t need any room to swing a cat. (Please note:

cat swinging is strictly prohibited in all Fringe venues.)

Seating Capacity: 29 (four rows of floor-level chairs with a row of stools at the back; decent view from anywhere in the room)

Stage size: 3m wide x 1.8m deep x 40cm high

Backstage area: A tight space either side of the stage. There will likely be a shared backstage / changing area outside of the room.

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $70 per night)

EVATT ROOM

A small capacity venue with a few more seats and some slightly better tech options than the Toy Library, but don’t get us wrong, this nice tight space is still suited

to smaller acts. Very much like our old Son of Loft venue.

Seating Capacity: 41 (6 rows of chairs on the ground, with one row of stools at the back; decent view from most areas, by the sixth row on the floor you might want

to avoid tall people in front of you)

Stage size: 3.58m wide x 1.8m deep x 40cm high

Backstage area: A nice tight space either side of the stage. There will likely be a shared backstage / changing area outside of the room.

OLD COUNCIL CHAMBERS

A beautiful heritage room with bench seating and a basic rig best-suited to stand-up comedy, spoken word or performance without much set or large props – the

big thing is you cannot do anything that will cause damage to the room, including messy scenes with chocolate sauce or glitter. Your audience will enjoy the

beautiful charm of this room while you beguile them with your words. Who needs a jacuzzi on stage anyway? This ain’t Blanc de Blanc.

Seating Capacity: 55

Stage size: 3.6m wide x 2.9m deep x floor level (beautiful wooden floor)

Backstage area: A large space backstage for you to pirouette, lunge and twerk yourself into your best form before going on-stage

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $80 per night)

MUSIC ROOM

Our most sound-isolated room, in a separate part of the building to the other spaces. If your event contains more than 15% yodelling then you may only apply to

this room. Basic tech setup, but good sound system; best suited to comedy, cabaret or performance work without large lighting requirements.

Seating Capacity: 55 (6 rows of chairs on the ground, with one row of stools at the back; decent view from most areas)

Stage size: 4.87 m wide x 2.38m deep x 20cm high

Backstage area: A decent space backstage for the inevitable pile of Rolands and sequined capes

ARCHIVE ROOM

Similar to the Evatt room but with more tech options and a larger stage, more seating and three tiers for better views of the stage; would be well-suited to solo

work or small ensembles. Very much like our old Loft venue, but better.

Seating Capacity: 57 (3 rows of chairs on the ground, two rows of stools on the ground, and two rows of stools on a riser; great view from throughout)

Stage size: 4.8m wide x 2.4m deep x 40cm high

Backstage area: A tight space to one side of the stage; any more than three people and you better be good friends. An additional shared dressing room outside of

the room is probable.

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $120 per night)

QUILT ROOM

One of our best tech rigs for a room this size, along with raked seating and a large stage space. This venue is best suited for performance, theatre or movement

work with more lighting requirements than our smaller rooms and shows that need full views of the stage. Very much like our old Studio venues.

Seating Capacity: 60 (1 row of chairs on the ground, then seven rows of chairs on raked seating; great view from throughout). Capacity may be increased with an

additional row of seats on the ground, with a reduction in stage space.

Stage size: 5.35m wide x 5m deep x floor level (black Tarkett or similar)

Backstage area: A decent space backstage – not a heap of room for set and prop storage, but enough to high five each other before you go on stage

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $150 per night)

MEETING ROOM

Almost identical to the Quilt Room but with a slightly smaller stage and less backstage room, but with a projector and higher capacity. One of our best tech rigs for a

room this size, along with raked seating. This venue is best suited for performance, theatre or movement work that has higher lighting and AV requirements.

Seating Capacity: 63 (1 row of chairs on the ground, then seven rows of chairs on raked seating; great view from throughout). Capacity may be increased with an

additional row of seats on the ground, with a reduction in stage space.

Stage Size: 5.6m wide x 3.8m deep x floor level (black Tarkett or similar)

NEW COUNCIL CHAMBERS

Our flexible space, dedicated to ambitious and exciting ideas that might not fit into any of the other rooms. Could be suitable for dance, cross-artform, live-art, in-

the-round or promenade theatre type projects. There is no prescribed seating or staging configuration like the other rooms in the Fringe Hub, so capacity is quite

variable. You know that show you wanted to do where all the audience are standing in a circle and you’re sitting on an armchair with a typewriter for an hour typing

the phrase “if the monkeys can do it, so can I” over and over again? This is the room you need.

Seating Capacity: Variable, depending on configuration (e.g. up to 75 end-on, 100 traverse, 130 in the round)

Stage rise: Floor level, Tarkett or similar floor covering.

Backstage area: A large space backstage for storage and change area.

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $175 per night)

1 x Dimmer TBC A dimmer for your non-digital lights (3-Phase TBC)

NB: there are more unknowns with the New Council Chambers space than any other room, as we are not sure if

the room (which is still under construction) will have 3-Phase power. If it does not, additional LED lighting will be

provided in place of some of the higher wattage units.

OLD BALLROOM

The heart of the Fringe Hub, this is our year-round licensed venue and has a stellar set-up for live music events. You might have known it as Bella Union in the past,

but this beautiful performance space & bar is much more than what it was in the past. Layout can include either cabaret or theatre style seating, so seating capacity

varies depending on set up. Very much like our old Underground venue – and with this audio rig you’ll want to take advantage of the space and bring a band with

you, even if it’s just a stand-up show. The bar will not be used during shows, unless staffing is covered by the shows requesting it; otherwise, there’s another bar a

60 second walk away from which audience can bring in their drinks!

Seating Capacity: 66 cabaret seating; 80 mixed cabaret and theatre; 174 standing (theatre seating is also an option, just let us know!)

Stage Size: 6m wide x 3.4m deep x 75cm high

Backstage area: Dedicated backstage room behind the stage

NEW BALLROOM

The big one!! This is where we will also hold our biggest Club Fringe nights, and is the largest capacity venue. Programming is flexible (i.e. we can cater to one-off

events or full seasons of work, whatever works for you!). The large capacity means it’s best suited to any event with a very strong marketing plan and existing

audience, but we can make any style work in here. Very much like our old Main Theatre venue, but so so much better – an excellent lighting and audio rig, a great

atmosphere and the best techs this side of town. The bar will not be used during shows, unless staffing is covered by the shows requesting it; otherwise, there’s

another bar a 60 second walk away from which audience can bring in their drinks!

Seating Capacity: 189-213 (full capacity is 213 seats, but depending on staging of event some seats may be restricted view)

Stage size: 7.2m wide x 3m deep x 1m high

Backstage area: A large area either side of stage, you’ll be able to host a pre-show tea party if you want to

Hire Rate: 30% Gross Box Office (minimum hire is $375 per night)

FRINGE HUB FRINGE

If you are putting in an application for the Fringe Hub Fringe (please see Hub Information Pack for more details) then you might be wondering what sort of spaces

around Trades Hall could possibly be used? Well… we’d like you to tell us! There are corridors, random meeting rooms, nooks under stairwells, a covered car park,

the Loading Dock Bar, the front portico steps, an artist studio in the tower, and a rooftop area. Now we don’t know if any or all of these spaces are available to use

– and they most likely won’t be able to have any kind of permanent infrastructure in them – but if you have a weird, wonderful live-art or experimental

performance type idea that just needs a space of some kind, then pitch your idea to us and we’ll find out what might be possible in this sprawling building known as

Trades Hall.

There are also other areas nearby that can be a part of “Fringe Hub Fringe” – it doesn’t need to be in the building, just begin at (or near) the Hub. For example,

there’s a chapel next door, a Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy across the road, Melbourne Baths around the corner and a half-dozen parks within spitting distance.

We’ve had shows in the past leave in cars from the Fringe Hub entry, and others performed in buses parked on the side of the road. Whatever your idea is, let us

know!

To apply to the Fringe Hub Fringe, fill out the Fringe Hub EOI form and select “Fringe Hub Fringe” as your venue preference, along with your ideas for alternative

performance spaces.

THAT’S IT!!

That’s everything we know about the room capabilities and all our plans for how to use them. As mentioned at the start, information in this document is indicative

only – brand names may change, number of units may change; the purpose of these tech specs is so you can see what we’re planning with each space. We’re going

to make sure each room reaches its full potential, but that may mean swapping a Fresnel out to add in a profile, or swapping 8 Multipars out for 4 movers.

Once you’ve made sure you read the Hub Info Pack (we say it many times because it really is very important to read it) head to our Fringe Hub EOI form to get your

application in before 10am on Monday 29 April. Once you’ve done that, also head to www.melbournefringe.com.au to check out some of the other venue options

out there.
