significance, it is important to note that our students will not be defined by their ATAR score, but should instead be judged on the fine young people they are, the skills and qualities they possess and the successful lives they will go on to lead.

YEARS 10 & 11 EXAMSSemester 2 examinations for Frogmore students commence on Thursday 15 November all of our Year 10 & 11 students have been encourage to ensure they have checked the Exam Schedule which is available through the LMS. Should they have any questions regarding these exams then students have been directed to please raise those with their Mentor, classroom teacher or via the Teaching and Learning office asap.

In addition to current classwork and assessments students are encouraged to ensure they are undertaking a suitable program of revision in the lead up to these exams and as such have been reminded that study venues are open until 6.30pm Monday – Thursday each week. In addition, the Study Centre is also open on Saturday from 11am – 4pm.

Being organised and undertaking effective preparation will be important steps in helping students achieve their learning goals for these exams.

INFORMATION EVENINGSA reminder that we will be holding a number of Information Evenings towards the end of this year and early in 2019 and we encourage all interested parents and students to attend:

We are holding two such Information Evenings in the coming weeks:

Thursday 8 November – information presented will be relevant to parents of current Year 9 students, and students themselves, who are entering Year 10 in Frogmore in 2019.

Thursday 29 November – information presented will be relevant to parents of all Year 12 (2019) or Year 11 (2019) students undertaking a Unit 3/4 study in 2019.

Parents will have received information regarding these Information Evenings via email. If you have not received an invitation and would like to attend, then please contact the Frogmore Office for details.

An Information Evening specific to our Year 11 students and parents will be held in early 2019.

MELBOURNE CUP WEEKENDA reminder that Monday 5 November is part of our mid-term break ahead of the Melbourne Cup holiday. Classes will resume on Wednesday 7 November.

While I am sure our Year 12 students are completely across their examination timetables, a reminder that VCE exam-inations across a number of subjects will be held on Monday 5 November.

YEARS 11 AND 9 PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM – SESSION 3Initial awkwardness gone when trying to connect with new people, this week’s Peer Support session had lots of laughter, games and fun. The Year 11s have been working hard behind the scenes to make sure that on the day, Year 9 students are able to enjoy their activities. It may not seem the most important thing to the Year 9s right now, but from previous student reflections we know that these small act of kindness and connections go a long way when navigating their first few weeks in Frogmore. Our 2019 House Captains definitely see this as a valuable way to get to know their new Frogmore peers:

Isabella Daddo - Finlay Anderson 2019 House CaptainPeer Support has been a rewarding experience that Finlay Anderson has readily embraced. A range of different activities have been incorporated over the recent sessions including ‘getting to know you’ activities, fear pong and camouflage. These activities helped form friendships between the Year 11s and Year 9s and thus assist them in tran-sitioning into Frogmore.

Chris Perkins – Drinan 2019 House CaptainPeer Support is a really useful program that allows Year 9s to progress slowly into Frogmore and lets the older stu-dents get to know them. The program includes the Year 9s straight away into Frogmore before they have even begun

the transition. Additionally, it allows the House to show the Year 9s how proud we are to be in Drinan and that we are one big family.

ART AND DESIGN EXHIBITION 2018 The value of creativity lies not in its results, not in the product of creation, but in the process itself. Exhibiting and sharing their final result with an audience is often what drives students, this year our Art and Design Exhibition aimed to include both final results and process. Throughout the exhibition words relat-ing to process were displayed, words such as explore, experiment, develop, refine, resolve, research, communicate, imagine, the list goes on. At Mentone Grammar, it is the entire process, the creative journey that each student takes which we value. Students learn that designing, producing and resolving work is essential to learning. This is just as important as creating finished art and design works.

The 2018 Art and Design exhibition displayed artworks and products created by students from Years 5 through12. Process videos on screens and iPads were accessible throughout the exhibition, these videos showcased the process involved in creating the works. Visitors had an opportunity to look through visual diaries and ask students what was involved in the making of a work.

The Creativity Centre has provided students with state-of-the-art learn-ing facilities which inspire their critical and creative thinking. Their work reflects the strength of the Visual Art and Technologies programs. Fol-lowing is an excerpt from the reflection read by Imogen Schwarz, (Visu-al Art Captain).

‘I truly believe that we possess so much creative talent at Mentone Grammar. This aptitude does not just come in the form of great pencil technique or brushwork. The talent that we have seen on display at the Art and Design exhibition has been due to our ability to harness cre-ative thinking. What is creativity? It is an ability that many look beyond. However, it is quite possibly the most important trait that one can possess. Behind every artwork is an idea, a theme or a message. And this message when expressed creatively can push boundaries and foster change. In 1942 Pablo Picasso dismantled an old bicycle and attached the handlebars to the seat to bring out the resemblance to the head of a bull, a simple act that gives us a more accurate depiction of creativi-ty. It is the ability to see past the normal and conjure an idea that is unique. There is no dispute that Art and Design at Mentone Grammar has allowed for this talent to thrive within our students.’

VCAL COMMUNITY PROJECTSToward the end of Term 3 and early Term 4, VCAL students worked in small groups to create an event that ben-efited a community, either within our school or in the wider community. These events enabled the students to develop project management skills, including detailed planning and organisation, problem-solving, budgeting, promotion and communication. Feedback for the events was extremely positive. Even when things didn’t work out perfectly – such as the weather! – the students adapted their plans and reflected on aspects of their planning they could improve in the future.

Events included:• Doggy Day Out – Angus Spargo hosted a fun morning for dogs and their owners on the Frogmore oval.

Guests received a “doggy bag” on arrival with goods generously donated by Paws and Whiskers in Men-tone. Angus raised nearly $500 for the RSPCA.“I was proud of the way I organised the doggy bags but felt I could have promoted the event better. On the day people told me this should happen every Saturday. Families were happy, and it put a smile on my face to see the dogs enjoying themselves”

• World Teachers Day luncheon – Patrick Distefano, Lachlan Hughes and Jaylen Mure held a lunch to let teachers know how much their hard work is appreciated! Teachers were treated to delicious pizzas and baked potatoes fresh from our wood-fired oven.“We got great feedback from all the teachers saying that the food tasted awesome and thanks for putting on the lunch.” – Lachlan Hughes

• Yarrabah Movie Experience – Aiden Renshaw and Huntar Pace have been volunteering weekly in Yarra-bah’s ‘Nail It’ woodwork program. They decided to raise money to take 30 Yarrabah students to see Chris-topher Robin at Hoyts Cinema in Frankston. The excursion ran smoothly and the Yarrabah students had a great time. One student proclaimed it “the best day ever!”

MONASH SCHOLARS – STUDENT REFLECTIONS

I attended the Monash Scholars Day in which I undertook a range of activities to get a feel of studying at the University. It was most comparable to a field-specific open day, in this instance for business/commerce. Given this is the field I am most interested in studying I found the day to be a worthwhile resource to learn about the courses, the people teaching and learning the content, career opportunities and the grounds at Monash. What I found most interesting was the opportunities to study abroad, most specifically in Proto, Italy. If I get the ATAR for Monash, I think it will be my first preference. To anyone else considering a business career path, I would seriously talk to your relevant teachers to ensure you can make use of these opportunities that are available to you. BenPertich

On Thursday 25 October, I was lucky enough to be one of the students who attended the Commerce Scholars Day at Monash University Caulfield Campus. It was a valuable experience as I was able to gain insight on two areas on which I was interested in (by attending two master classes) as well as have present and past students come in and answer questions about their Monash experience and where it led them in their career paths. The master classes helped exhibit the courses Monash could offer and the pathways in which it could lead to finding a job in the future. Another topic discussed was the critical concept of employability, and the numerous and various ways in which Monash could help improve employability through different programs at the university. Overall, the day helped me to understand what would be in store for myself (or my peers) if we decided to take the business/commerce route and how this could change our lives in the future, as well as helping to show the many values of Monash University.ToreyBernahoff

The Monash Scholars Day was an engaging and entertaining day. The masterclasses were run by people who knew what they were talking about and kept the group interested for the entire seminar. I learnt a large amount about all aspects of Commerce and attending this day has further excelled my understanding of my plans after year 12.Cian Curley

The Monash Scholars Day was a wonderful way to be introduced to ‘life at uni’ and learn about the types of courses and degrees to pursue in 2020 or further on. I learnt more about completing double degrees and how to participate in internships. We were able to speak to some Monash graduates and learn about their life after uni and how getting involved in these internships and completing double degrees helped them get to where they are today. I completed two master classes where I learnt about the impacts of exporting and importing goods and services and about leadership and how it differs from management. Overall, the day spent at Monash Business School was a very insightful experience and it helped me to identify what career path I wanted to take as well as how to pursue it. Madeleine Ghent
