We wish all of the mums, grandmothers and mother figures in our school commu-nity a wonderful Mothers’ Day this Sunday. Children have been busy this week making plans and creating very unique presents. The Kindy classes are holding their Mothers’ Day celebrations on both Wednesday and Thursday this week from 8.50-10am.

All mums and grandmothers, as well as other parents and friends, are invited to attend our Year 3 Mothers’ Day Mass this Friday at 8.45am, followed by the Mother’s Day morning tea to be held in the Brennan Hall. Mums, grandmothers and other significant family members are asked to assemble with their children and their class as they walk to the church. They are invit-ed to sit with their children for the mass. NAPLAN – National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy 2018 Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, our Year 3 and 5 students, along with the Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students around Australia, will be participating in NAPLAN. The students will be as-sessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and nu-meracy. The results provide a snapshot of a student’s achievement in comparison to all stu-dents of the same year level across the country. As a parent, it helps your child if you take a positive view of the NAPLAN tests. It’s better to see them as learning opportunities for children as well as opportunities for them to overcome any anxieties or nerves that these tests may bring.

Dear Father,

We thank you for creating each Mum with a unique combination of gifts and tal-

ents. We thank you for the sacrifice of self each mum gives for her children. For

the late nights spent rocking an unwell infant. For the hands busy with washing,

wiping, scrubbing, mixing, baking, stirring, hugging, patting, disciplining, hold-

ing, writing, painting and pouring.

We thank you for the gift of time mums give

for their kids, whether it’s stay-at-home or

working mums and mums who have some com-

bination of the two. We thank you for the flex-

ibility of mums, for their tirelessness, their

perseverance and their devotion.

We pray you give each mum strength. We ask you to be the daily bread of tired

mothers. We ask you to be their living water. We ask you to be their source of

spiritual and physical strength. We pray that each mother rejects perfectionism

and instead embraces the goodness of the gospel.

Most of all, Lord, on this day in which we honour mothers, may we love and cher-

ish the special women who gave birth to us, who has nurtured us, and who has

prayed for our well-being. May our hearts overflow with gratitude to you for our

mums. AMEN

It’s also worth remembering that many children don’t stress over these tests. The vast majority take them in their stride, wondering what all the fuss is about. Whether your child stresses or takes them in his/her stride, here are some tips to help prepare your child or

young person for the NAPLAN tests:

1. Take your cues from your child: If your child doesn’t worry about them then neither should you. Be

careful not to create a problem that doesn’t exist by incessantly talking about, or worse, worrying about the

test.

2. Focus on doing their best and trying hard: Choose your words carefully when you speak with your chil-

dren. As with all their learning activities place your focus squarely on effort rather than results. The only pres-

sure on children should be to try hard rather than to do well.

3. Listen to any concerns they have: If your child confesses to some nerves then validate their feelings,

rather than shut them down with a ‘get over it’ response. “Yes, sometimes tests can be a little scary, but they

get easier every time you take them.” Use this as an opportunity to develop some emotional smarts, which

starts with recognising how children feel.

4. Give them some relaxation ideas: Anxious or nervous children will benefit from some simple relaxation

strategies. Taking some deep breaths, changing their thinking and exercising the morning of the test are some

simple ways to help children get some feeling of control.

5. Help them retain their perspective: One way to help children who become excessively anxious about

an event is to ask what’s the worst thing that could happen? Okay, they may not do as well as they would like

but the sun will stay rise tomorrow. Keeping perspective is a life skill that we all need to practise.

A positive, caring parent attitude is one of the best gifts you can give a child when they are apprehensive or

nervous about approaching any different situation whether it’s going on school camp, joining a new club or

sitting a NAPLAN test.

Walk Safely to School Day 18 May 2018

Friday 18 May is National Walk Safely to School Day. The purpose of the day is to encourage parents and car-

ers to walk with their children to and from school to promote the health benefits of walking and creating good

habits, to help children develop hood road safety skills and to reduce the dependency on cars for travel. All

children who walk to school on this day will receive a sticker for their efforts.

This will be a great opportunity to discuss with your child road safety and in particular the importance of cross-

ing roads. Choose a safe place to cross, either at a pedestrian facility or where you have a good view of ap-

proaching traffic and where drivers can easily see you. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK whenever you cross a

road and always hold a young child’s hand.

Homework Club begins today and will continue each Wednesday afternoon of the term in the library from

2.45 – 3.20pm. These are supervised sessions where students have the opportunity to work on homework

tasks with the assistance of a teacher or education assistant.

Happy Mothers’ Day!

Our Lady has asked us to Pray the Rosary

Many Catholics know that at Lourdes in France and Fatima in Portugal, places of approved apparitions of Mary, she specifically asked for the Rosary to be prayed. But there are many instances of Our Lady requesting that the Rosary be prayed – including to Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

This happened at the time of the ‘call within a call’ that the Albanian Loreto nun, Sr Teresa, received when God asked her to form a new order of nuns to serve the poorest of the poor on the streets of Calcutta.

Later Mother Teresa wrote to her archbishop that Mary had spoken to her in a vision as well:

“I did not see her face but I heard her say, ‘Take care of them, they are mine. Bring them to Jesus, carry Jesus to them. Fear not. Teach them to say the Rosary, the family Rosary, and all will be well. (Tell them) Fear not, Jesus and I will be with you and your children.’”

The Rosary Unites us….… to God and with each other

I’m always intrigued when I see someone with the beads. A young guy checks my bag at the entrance to the store – he has a rosary ring on his finger. An elderly man walking down the street in the mid-afternoon sun-shine, beads in hand, lips moving just perceptively. A family has a Rosary sticker and a silhouette of Mary on the back of its car.

I wonder what’s going on in their lives. I briefly mentally raise them to God; look after him, look after them. The rosary unites us, brothers and sisters together in Christ. Marilyn Rodrigues Catholic family
