This is a momentous year for Decatur Heritage Christian Academy – the 20th year of our existence! As I begin my twelfth year here, I have seen substantial changes over that time. Those changes have run the gamut from location and facilities to personnel and student body. We have strived to make those changes positive in nature, and our success in that ongoing endeavor has been measured in many ways. Internally, we examine ourselves and try to evaluate each year’s results. We ask our parents to give us feedback, both real-time and through more formal methods such as our annual survey. Meeting the expectations of those closest to the program is always a crucial measure of effectiveness.

However, those closest to the program can also find themselves too close or too busy to notice blind spots or areas of compromise. That is where the benefit of outside accountability through the accreditation process comes in. We received our initial accreditation in the spring of 2001 and have undergone a renewal every five years since. This is one of those years. The administration and faculty have already formed several teams to address various aspects of an extensive self-study. Our parents and students will be involved in that process as well through a new, required survey from our accrediting body. Finally, an outside team will make a campus visit in the spring to examine the extent to which our self-study corresponds to what is actually happening on campus. This entire process is a huge amount of work but always well worth it, both for the renewal of the official seal of approval and for the growth that occurs by going through the process itself.

Our accrediting agency gives us a thorough, top-to-bottom examination. They have standards and benchmarks that we must meet in areas of governance, finances, faculty, facilities, and curriculum. Each of those areas must not only meet minimum standards but also reflect a commitment on our part to be continuously improving. They also want to know how our strategies, tactics, and allocation of resources reflect our stated mission and vision for our school. They don’t just want to know what we are doing; they want to know why. As a Christian school, shouldn’t that be first and foremost on our minds?

Above and beyond any accreditation concerns, our reason for being and our faithfulness to that calling must always be our primary concern. To paraphrase, “what does it profit a school to gain the whole world and yet lose its soul?” Our theme for this year is Keeping First Things First. As I develop that thought for you in this newsletter and as we live it at the school, I want to place the discussion in the context of our current conditions. Our culture has been changing for years in ways that is

Mrs. Kim Elliott joins the Lower School faculty teaching 5th grade history and reading and 6th grade history. A native of Athens, Alabama, she graduated from Freed-Hardeman University with a B.S. in History Education. She taught at Middle Tennessee Christian School in Murfreesboro for eight years before moving back to Alabama. She and her husband, Chad, have started the process of adoption and look forward to expanding their family.

Coach Mike Smith is no stranger at Decatur Heritage having assisted coaching the girls basketball team for five years. Coach Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with a 37-year tenure with Decatur City Schools. He taught social studies, AP government and politics, and current world affairs.  He and his wife, Wanda, have two daughters, Amy and Teri.

going to demand distinctiveness on our part to avoid being swallowed up. God expects obedience and faithfulness, but never promised that He would provide laws or a cultural context to make that easy. In fact, those times when the environment was the worst allowed the light of the Gospel to shine the brightest.

In Keeping First Things First, that does not mean we are going to neglect math, science, history, drama, music, or sports. In our next issue, I will explain how doing those very things effectively provides us with the platform for showing our priorities. God has called us to be a school, and He knows those things need to be done and done with excellence. He has also told us that He will be with us in that process, if we will but focus our energies on those things within the boundaries set forth in Scripture. We trust Him for the results when we allow Matthew 6:33 to guide us: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

I used to be envious of peoplewith “cool testimonies.” You know,the ones who had a terrible homelife or ended up in jail, then Jesuschanged everything. My story isquite different, but still significant.I grew up with a pastor as my dad.He was and still is a really goodpastor whom I look up to andrespect. I was raised to believe inJesus. I knew that Jesus was theonly way to get into heaven, so selfishly, I “accepted” Him at a young age. As I grew older, I learned that there were different religions, different views, and I had to ask, “How do I know that my religion is the right one?” I wanted to make sure that my faith was right and that it was my own, not just something I blindly believed because my parents told me it was true. Under the teaching of my father (Pastor Steve Bateman), Mr. Holiday, Josh McDowell, and many others who greatly influenced me, I became aware of the evidence for christianity. It’s not just another religion that people believe blindly. It’s THE TRUTH. And whether or not you believe this, truth has extreme consequences. 

As I learned more about christianity, I learned that it wasn’t just about me getting to go to heaven. It’s about the glory of God. My entire life is supposed to be lived for Him! At first, when I came to this realization, I was super unhappy. After all, I’m a selfish person and desire to live for myself. But I wanted to change. I wanted to desire to live for Him. I still struggle daily to give my life up for Him and for His glory. But every time I succeed, I tell you it is worth it. Give up yourself, your desires, and find your joy in Christ. I still fail often at this and appreciate any prayers that I may do better. 

There is great peace in living this Christ-following life. I now know that He is in control of all things and that He is good. He has my best interest at heart (Romans 8:28). There is peace in this when things don’t go as I plan. For example, I planned to graduate DHCA, go to Union University, and graduate with a nursing degree. However, I experienced severe health problems and as a result, I had to come home from Union. I tried again to attain my nursing degree at Calhoun, but I could not keep up with clinical days due to my illnesses. Little did I know that my coming home would result in meeting the awesome, God-fearing man I am married to today. Little did I know that not getting a nursing degree would result in a dream job at First Bible Church where I get paid to help with children’s ministry. God knew. He knew it all. He knows everything that is going on in your life as well. Trust Him. He is good. He is in control. And He cares for you.  Joy Bateman Conway

The 2015 Distinguished Faculty Award was awarded to Ms. Donna

Oliver who teaches in the Upper School math department. The senior class chooses a faculty

member who has prepared them for lives of impact.

Julie Reid and Evan Francis received The Heritage Award at commencement in May. This honor, selected by the core faculty instructing the seniors, is granted to students who most exemplify characteristics that would empower a graduate to live a life of impact.

Center  for  Excellence  SUMMER  2015

Our  "Center  For  Excellence"  program  continues  to  grow,  providing  enrichment  opportunities  for  students  in  the  Morgan  County  area.    The  program  that  began  in  2010  is  open  to  all  students  and  offers  opportunities  for  discovering  and  exploring  talents  and  skills  while  engaging  in  meaningful  and  fun  experiences  through  arts,  instructional,  and  sports  academies.
