Divine Mercy Sunday April 19, 2020

In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

This passage from the First Letter of Saint Peter in today's second reading speaks very plainly to the moment we are currently living through. As I preached last week on Easter Sunday, we rejoice in the resurrection, yet at the same time are still suffering the pains of the Covid-19 pandemic. Joy and suffering are not mutually exclusive. In fact we can say that suffering is constitutive to true joy.Pope Saint John Paul II reflected on these words of Saint Peter at a prayer service for the sick and suffering in this way.

"In this way Human suffering is a great mystery, but our Christian tradition helps us to understand it. As we are told in the First Letter of Peter, we may be called to experience suffering in our lives, but only through a faith which is tested shall we obtain the salvation of our souls. The only way to share in Christ’s glorious victory over sin and death is by being united with him in his Passion. It is Jesus’ Death and Resurrection which show us the meaning of human suffering. Believers who suffer in union with Christ and surrender themselves to him help make his salvation known to others.""Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion is not a stumbling block for you, but a source of joy and hope. Accepting your suffering in this way, you allow others to see the true dignity of the human person. You reveal a God who loves us so much that he became one of us in order to share our pain and sorrows. You make known the truth that God will transform death itself into a beautiful future where he will wipe away every tear from our eyes."

So this is our task, post Easter, to neither deny our suffering or the truth of the resurrection. Maybe not today, tomorrow or any time soon, but at some point we will be able to see how this crisis has helped us to grow in faith, to trust in the Lord and to find joy in rising from it.DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary.St. Faustina’s Diary records Jesus’ request that a Feast of Mercy be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy was also given to St. Faustina and, in addition, Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray the Chaplet beginning on Good Friday and ending on Holy Saturday. The Priests, Seminarian Chris and

I have been live streaming our prayer of the novena every day of this past week. Throughout it, we have prayed especially for those who are significantly burdened by the coronavirus pandemic. Today at 3:00 p.m. on both our YouTube channel and Facebook page we will stream a special praying of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, remembering all the many who have born the cross of the Covid-19 virus. Please join us. You can find the link on our web page https://holyfamilyparishny.org I ask you to continue to pray for the sick and to let us know of those who are afflicted, so we may

remember them in prayer. I also ask you to sincerely pray for those who have shouldered much of the sorrow and anxieties of these days, our health care and emergency personnel. EASTER BLESSINGS OF HOMES AND FAMILIES - The Priests of Holy Family will be offering Easter Blessings of your homes and your families. We will visit from a safe distance on the sidewalk or front yard and extend the blessings of the Resurrected Lord on you, as we continue to support each other during this difficult time. Please go the on line form at https://tinyurl.com/Hfam-EB to schedule an Easter Home Blessing. CONTINUED THANKS - I express my gratitude once again for the kindness and care you have been showing to us. We very much appreciate the cards, notes, emails and voice messages you have left for us.On behalf of Sister Carol and those who are served by our food pantry, I express our deepest appreciation for your continued care for those who are most in needIn addition, your continued financial support of the parish is remarkable. Due to the limited schedule of staff, along with the Easter holiday, last week's collection information is not yet completely compiled, but I can share with you that together this parish community is continuing to do an awesome job of sustaining the mission of the parish. Please continue to do so.
