Road SafetyRoad Safety

I have been advised that under Brisbane City Council’s schoolzone parking compliance activities, Wondall Heights StateSchool will continue to be included on a list of priority schoolsfor inspection.

Your child’s safety is our top priority, I wanted to take thisopportunity to remind you about RoadRoad SafetySafety around ourschool..

The area at the front of the school is a two minute set down andpick up area. Please remain in your car when using this area toreduce congestion. This pick up area has been designed withthe safety of our children as a priority.

It is expected that all children will be collected from school by3.20pm.

We encourage students to travel to school where possible inan active way; walking, cycling or riding a scooter. Activelytravelling to school is a simple way to promote a healthy lifestyleand reduce traffic congestion around the school. A crossing

supervisor is stationed on Radford Road and students crossingRadford Road are asked to use this facility. If students ridea bike or scooter to school, they must wheel their bikes orscooters through the school grounds, and must arrive anddepart using one of the pedestrian school gates.

Parents’ cars are not permitted to enter the school groundswithout prior permission from the Principal. Gates to the lowercarpark and all other school gates are locked after 3.30pmeach afternoon.

Whether students arrive by car, bicycle or on foot, in orderto promote safety for all students and visitors must use apedestrian entrance to enter and leave the school. Studentsmust not take short cuts through staff car parks.

PlaygroundsPlaygrounds

There are two times during the day where students are giventhe opportunity to play.

Students are able to access the following play areas:

Please note that no students are permitted to use the schoolplay equipment before or after school.

LEGO CHALLENGELEGO CHALLENGE

Thank you to the two families that completed the communityLEGO Challenge this holidays and submitted photos. Awesomework and great community spirit!

• Effort MarksEffort Marks - Although we strive to do our best andachieve well on our report cards, the effort mark isalso very important. I was very impressed to readthat so many children were receiving ‘Excellent’ or‘Very Good’ for their effort marks in learning andbehaviour. This is so important to become asuccessful and life-long learner.

• Eating AreasEating Areas – It is important to remember thatstudents have two allocated 10 minute eating timesper day. This is time for students to sit and eat sotheir bodies and brains can refuel for learning. Wehave had incidents of children not doing the rightthing through this time and being disrespectful tostaff on duty. All P-2 students were reminded of theEating Time Procedure and that they have a duty tolisten to staff, keep their areas clean of lunch litterand to wait until instructed to leave the eating areafor play.

Welcome back!Welcome back!

It has been lovely to see so many smiling faces entering theschool grounds this week. This school year has presentedmany challenges for us all. With the start of the school termit is important that children are attending school each day.Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendanceat school is associated, on average, with higher studentachievement.

Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day:

Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child ofschool age is enrolled and attends school all day, every schoolday unless they have a reasonable explanation. Illness, competing in a school sporting event or going on a schoolexcursion are reasonable excuses for being absent fromschool.

Student Code of ConductStudent Code of Conduct

Over the coming term Wondall Heights State School willcommence the process of community consultation of ourschool’s Student Code of Conduct. Consultation forms animportant part of the development and feedback process forthe Student Code of Conduct.

The Student Code of Conduct replaces the:

Queensland state schools have the full 2020 school year todevelop and consult with their community on the new StudentCode of Conduct. Until a school finalises their Student Code ofConduct, the existing Responsible Behaviour Plan for Studentscontinues to apply.

What is the Student Code of Conduct? Every Queensland stateschool is required to have a Student Code of Conduct. Thisis the school’s behaviour policy, with information about schoolrules, consequences and processes for addressing bullying andthe use of technology. Student Code of Conduct replaces theResponsible Behaviour Plan for Students, Code of Behaviourand Statement of Expectations. The Student Code of Conductis developed in consultation with each local school community,is published on the school website and provided to everystudent and family upon enrolment.

Content of Student Code of Conduct: Every state school hastheir own Student Code of Conduct developed to meet localneeds, however the following sections are mandated forinclusion: Purpose, Contact information, Endorsement,Contents, Whole school approach to discipline (includingdifferentiation of discipline), Disciplinary consequences, Schoolpolicies (Temporary removal of student property, Use of mobilephones and other devices by students, Preventing andresponding to bullying and Appropriate use of social media),Restrictive practices, Critical incidents.

I look forward to your feedback and contribution to thisimportant school document.

Teachers at Wondall Heights State School consider the threecross-curriculum priorities continuously throughout theplanning, teaching, assessing and reporting cycles of thelearning areas. They do not constitute a curriculum on their ownas they do not exist outside of the learning areas.

The priorities provide national, regional and global dimensionsthat enrich the curriculum through development of consideredand focused content that fit naturally within the learning areas. These curriculum priorities support the delivery of learning areacontent at the same time as developing knowledgeunderstanding and skills relating to Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’sEngagement with Asia and/or Sustainability.
