It’s a beautiful day, and you decide to take a hike through the woods with man’s best friend. Half way through the hike, nature calls (your dog, not you), and Fido leaves a bit of himself along the trail for all to see. Integrity, and in some states the law, would tell you to clean up the mess. But no one else is on the trail, and you don’t like the thought of carrying a plastic bag of Fido’s left overs all the way back to the car. But you know what the sign at the trailhead said about leaving such treasures behind, and you know it’s the right thing to do. Integrity sure can mess up an afternoon stroll with man’s best friend quicker than a hiker stepping in, well, you know… Integrity. It’s more than something we merely check on a form. And it’s more than doing the right thing only when it’s convenient for us or when someone is looking. We tell ourselves it’s OK to cheat the system once in a while, but cheating becomes the norm. Over time and bent often enough, integrity becomes warped and unfocused. And before we know it, we’re spending a lot of energy justifying our out of balance lifestyle. Doing the right thing, even when no one is looking, is an intangible quality that is measured by our actions day in and day out. It’s the little things (cutting corners, looking the other way, not speaking up, going along to get along) that lead to bigger things. Not living a life of integrity is like the dark side of the Force. The power of the Force sure can be alluring, but it’s also empty. Trouble is you just don’t recognize how empty your life is until it’s too late. Just remember that once lost, you can rebuild integrity into your life. When doing the right thing gets in the way of what is convenient but not comfortable, let it. That’s integrity knocking at your conscience. Whether big or small, we all have to make decisions that either build up or tear down our character, our honor, and our ability to do the right thing. See you in Church! Mission Outreach Evangelism Partners in Education

The school year is winding down and the Lunch Buddy program concluded May 8 with a picnic for participating students. Threatening weather forced an outdoor  picnic  inside,  but  that  did  not  dampen  the  student’s  excited  spirits.  The  Reading Café at Fairfield Elementary school continues through June 10, the last Monday of the school year. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for helping sustain these two important programs this year. Farm Fresh receipts for 2012 – 2013 must be turned in by the first week of June. Only receipts dated through May 31st are eligible for redemption. Please bring them to church no later than June 3. The bottom portion of the receipt

with the 123-4, amount and date of purchase will be sent to Farm Fresh for redemption. Our total contribution for the year will be printed in the next newsletter. You may be surprised by how much Providence contributes!

Faith Coalition Sixteen volunteers from

Faith Works Coalition including Dewey Buschert traveled to Jamaica in Queens, NYC, the week of April 21-27, to assist in the recovery from hurricane Sandy. We were housed and fed by the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica and our work was coordinated by World Cares, operating out of a flooded church in Far Rockaway. We divided into two, sometimes three teams, and worked on one small church and eight houses providing help and hope to many distraught people. Providence Moves Into the Community event:

On May 4, a team of Providence workers, 10 Boy Scouts and 2 Scout leaders renovated the sanctuary area of Bow Creek Presbyterian Church on Rosemont Road and cleaned up the grounds and outdoor sheds. The vacant church, which provides day care for 68 children, was in poor condition. Our volunteers also planted flower beds to beautify the property.

Other teams visited and presented gift bags to Providence members at Westminster-Canterbury, Atlantic Shores and Chesapeake Place.

Prior to the event, volunteers baked cookies, made bookmarks and compiled gift bags. Teams thanked and delivered cookies to neighboring police and fire departments as well as to teachers and staff of Fairfield Elementary school.

A huge thank-you to all who participated in the Providence Moves Into the Community event especially to Carol Hickman, who chaired it. Whether doing manual labor, delivering gift bags or visiting shut-ins, Providence members made an impact in Virginia Beach and brightened the lives of many.

God's blessings to all of you, Sandra Rushton,

Project Light ends 13th year on an international note

Students from Hong Kong and Casablanca improved their English as a second language this spring in the Project Light Learning

Center at Providence. Other students improved their reading skills in the classes that met twice a week . The program ended its 13th year with a pizza party on May 23.

Providence members serving as tutors included Stephanie Boose, Jane Pritchett and Sandra Rushton. Classes are scheduled to resume in September.

Providence  Women’s  Ministries

H appy Birthday Presbyterian Women! Providence is blessed to have so many women contribute to make our Women’s  Worship  Service  on  May  5th  a  huge  success.  A  special

thank you to Rachel for delivering a delightful and meaningful sermon. It was a treat to have Katie Dixon play the viola while Valetta led the women's choir who sang beautifully, as always. While I would love to name each of you, from the scripture readers, greeters, ushers and communion servers; I must keep this short, so Thank You to everyone who particpated! Congratulation's to Louann Bielmann, the 2013 Women's Lifetime Award Recipient. Louann is a fun-loving woman who honors her friendships. No matter the task at hand she is willing to serve with a smile—even preparing communion trays each month. As an

active member of Providence, Louann has served as an Elder, choir member, care team leader, assisted in VBS preparations, active in the Norfolk Detention Center Ministry and coordinated and organized supplies for the food closet. Louann continues to be a blessing to our Providence family and a true servant of God.

Load them up.....the Providence bus is heading to the Summer Gathering at Massanetta, the weekend of June 14th. We have our largest group of women signed up to attend this weekend of spiritual renewal, workshops, mission work and new friendships. Want to join us? We still have 3 seats available on the bus, it's not too late to sign up. Look for pictures when we return.

Do you have a hobby or craft you enjoy or are willing to share? Do you have a special project you like to do or would like to learn? Ladies, mark your calendars for July 13 and join us for a day working on your favorite project while we socialize together. Lunch will be provided for a small fee of $10. We are looking for women to help sew Linus blankets, so bring a sewing machine or your yarn to knit, crochet or maybe you like to scrapbook. Whatever you enjoy, join us for a fun filled day from 9-3 in the Fellowship Hall and don't forget to bring a friend. For more information see PW bulletin board. God Bless!

Christian Education Congratulations to our Graduates!

Graduation is a special time... one that marks a great accomplishment and milestone in the life of a young and sometimes young-at-heart person. Celebrate with us the blessings of the Lord and the achievements of our Providence graduates during morning worship on Sunday, June 2! Look for individual graduate information on the bulletin board near the old kitchen, and in the upcoming July/August edition of The Invitation.

"And we pray...that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God..." Colossians 1:10

Summer Sunday School Summer   is   upon   us   and   it’s   time   for

Summer Sunday School! Come at 9:45am for a time of learning and fellowship!

Beginning June 16, our Middle School, High School, and Adult classes will join together to enjoy two selections in the Faith Lessons series featuring Ray Vander Laan. With beautiful video filmed on location in the Middle East, Faith Lessons illuminates the historical, geographical, and cultural context of the sacred Scriptures. This class will meet in the Media Room.

Children in kindergarten through 5th grade will come together in the Garden Room to enjoy age-appropriate, lectionary-based lessons using the Feasting on the Word curriculum. Each lesson includes Bible reading, prayer, chatting about the characters and points learned through the story. Fun activities will reinforce the Bible point.

Letter from Donna Rae To my Providence family and friends,

It has been my great joy to serve you over the last year and a half as the Director of Christian Education. What a delight to be greeted and supported by you all each Sunday morning and how amazing it has been to walk through the church year with you, celebrating God’s   gifts   of   grace   and  mercy. Dear friends have become more dear and new friends have become treasures in my heart as we have joined together as workers for Christ.

The time has come, however, for me to step down from this position. May 31, 2013, marks the end of my time as a staff member at Providence, but not the end of my time work-ing alongside you in the ministries of this amazing community of faith. I will continue as a volunteer where the Lord leads, and I can’t  wait   to   see   the  wonder-filled things God is going to do in our church!

Let me say that we have a great gift in this congregation…   a   loving   and   loyal   group   of  Christ-followers, diverse and unified. Each brings unique gifts and experiences, enhancing the whole, glorifying God. I have been richly blessed to have walked and served among you. I thank my God for each of you; I thank you for each day you allowed me to serve, each faith leap, each prayer, each hug, and each and every grace you have extended to me. My prayer for you (and for me!) as we face the bright future at Providence is that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding (Philippians 1:9).

Grace and Peace, Donna Rae

Music Notes from Valetta... M usic Sunday is June 9! On this

Sunday we especially celebrate the place of music in worship. . .its impact, its power to spread the gospel message, its importance as a corporate act of worship. While we are blessed with beautiful music every Sunday offered by our dedicated and talented ringers and singers, this might represent a wonderful opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to experience the warmth and friendliness of Providence!

During the more relaxed days of summer, when the choir takes a well-deserved break from their weekly Wednesday rehearsals, we will have a "pick-up" choir in the chancel to lead the congregational singing and offer a simple introit, and special music (solos, duets, small ensembles) during the anthem time. We would love to have you join us! We practice in the choir room right before worship, at 10:40, and no robes required! Children, youth, and adults are welcome. If you'd like to experience worship from a different perspective, give it a try! Questions? Call Valetta at 518-8299. Valetta

Man of the Year Award The General Assembly of the Presbyterian

Church has designated Father's Day of each year as Presbyterian Men's Day. During morning worship on June 16 we will recognize a man for his outstanding service to the church and/or community. Providence has presented this award annually since 1994. As part of the tradition, the identity of the awardee is kept secret (even the selectee does not know) until the announcement date. Providence men who have previously received the award make the annual selection. The most recent awardees include: Kevin Daley (2012), Tracy Gilbert (2012), Rich Armstrong (2011), Riley Hensly (2010), Mike Stockmeier (2009) and Don Reid (2008).

Join us in worship on June 16 in celebration of Men's Day, 2013. Providence men will also take a leadership role in worship that Sunday.

Youth Work Camp Lexington, NC June 2013

I would like to thank everyone that helped support the youth over the past few months with fund raisers and especially those folks that coordinated them. We ask that you continue to keep us in your  prayers  as  the  6  youth,  2  chaperone’s  and  4  staff travel to Lexington to help make a difference in the lives of families there. We hope to see you in church on Sunday June 30th so that the youth may share their experiences with you. Further questions contact Kevin Daley at 479-5558 or [email protected].
