I Timothy 6:17-19

From Our Minister of Church Life

(Disciples of Christ)

As many of you know, a few weeks ago the United States played host to a visit from Pope Francis. The reason that I’m fairly certain

that most if not all of us are aware of this is because his visit was highly publicized. His presence dominated the airwaves; radio and television seemed to be unable to go 15 minutes without an update on the Pope’s activities. I for one can say that articles, pictures, and videos of the Pope dominated my Facebook newsfeed.

But Why?

As you may well know, I’m not Catholic. The Pope is not the head of my church. Few of my friends are Catholic so why was my Facebook covered in references to the Pope?

In a word, Hope. It has been far too long since Christians have had an unadulterated vision of Christian Hope. Normally my exposure to Christianity in news media is embarrassing: some leader caught doing something they shouldn’t or Christians beating people (literally and figuratively) in order to help “save” them.

However, what we saw in Pope Francis was Hope. A Christian leader who would rather spend time with sinners than dine with saints. A Leader who embodies humility by cancelling dinners with the great to feed the poor. Hope is something that we need.

Hope keeps us going when we don’t think we can. Hope moves us to share what we know of the Gospel with others. We share our stories Hoping and believing that we can kindle a faith that will make a difference in their lives and much as it has in ours.

So Hope, not because of the evidence or the numbers. Hope because you have a God of love; a God who seeks you out no matter your wanderings. Hope because our faith is growing. It grows in you and it grows in me. Hope because of the greatness of our God, and the great works that are being done in God’s name. Hope because of the missionaries in the field. Hope because of the young ministers being trained at seminaries. Hope because of new members making friends with old.

1 Corinthians 13:13 states 3 of the foundations of Christianity: Faith, Hope, and Love.

October 4, 2015 On this beautiful fall morning, the class was led in singing familiar hymns by Krystal Milazzo accompanied by Carol Hooten. Ann Sanders followed with the Sunshine/Care Report. No birthdays or anniversaries this week. On the care report, Ann talked to June Paulson who is still having blood pressure problems; Jack Brown will resume chemo; Joanne Wilson is well; Robbie Brawner has the huge bandage off her hand and goes to the doctor this week; Bill and Betty Nyenhuis about the same; and Betty Hillin still having problems. Prayers for all. Jimmie Smith delivered a sincere prayer beginning with “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” While the offering was taken, Carol played a beautiful hymn. Paula Holland announced the week’s coming events and introduced our guests, Todd Kappelman’s wife, Deanna, and their niece, Audrey Filield. Also Owen Hooten and Helen Hillbish’s cousin, Bob Good from Downers Grove, IL.

Joe Milazzo taught the lesson from the Quarterly, “The Spirit is Not for Sale,” a continuation of the lessons from Acts. Perhaps Peter was too harsh with Simon but his intent was to give advice to Simon. Peter says Holy Spirit is a gift and given freely. Christianity has the answer of how we are to live together and take care of each other. It cannot be purchased. In gift giving there is no expectation of a return. You have to make yourself as Christlike as possible to receive the Holy Spirit.

Paula dismissed the class with her thought for the day: There is power in prayer. Be a victor, not a victim. The

class repeated the Class Benediction in unison to close.

October 11, 2015 Though attendance was rather small, those present enjoyed the music as presented by Kenneth Melvin and Carol Hooten. Ann Sanders followed with the Sunshine/ Care report: wedding anniversary for Jim and Carolyn Frenzel today and birthday for Todd Kappalman. She talked to Donna Robins and she and Kathy Zahrt are enjoying California. On the care side: June Paulson still having blood pressure problem; Bill and Betty Nyenhuis the same; Robbie Brawner is good; Jack Brown started chemo treatments. She was unable to reach Ralph Huffman; Paul Dolan visiting other churches. Prayer was given by Joe Milazzo citing how pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live in harmony together. Paula Holland reminded the class of the church picnic at White Rock Lake on Sunday, October 11.

Joe Milazzo taught the lesson “Saul Earns Credibility”

from Acts. Paul was a Roman citizen, had a strong intellect and knew the law. Joe tells of Paul’s born again experience, and how Paul immediately began preaching and believed he could prove to people that Jesus was the Messiah. The church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria living in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Holy Spirit increased in numbers. The only way to understanding God is to surrender oneself to God. Conversion is an ongoing experience. God is the epitome of goodness. As always Joe gives us a lot to think about.

Paula Holland closed with her thought for the day: Some people are kind, polite and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.

The Unconditional: A Postmodern Approach to Religion

Saturday, October 24, 2015

9:00 am to 1:45 pm Northway Christian Church, Dallas

This seminar will raise the question of whether in the “postmodern” world - the hightech, highly pluralistic and dizzyingly digitalized age we live in today - religion still has a place. We will explore an idea of religious faith, hope and love as the affirmation of the “unconditional” and then consider the extent to which this idea is or is not identical with what we call God and the

extent to which this affirmation is found not only in religion in the strict sense but also outside it. This notion of the unconditional can shed light on the contest that is being played out in our world between the religious and the secular, fundamentalism and its critics, theism and atheism, faith and reason, and between one religious faith and another.

In 2014, there were more than 330,000 people in Texas alone living with Alzheimer’s. Often terms like Alzheimer’s and dementia are used interchangeably. Dementia is a general term to describe a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is an overall term that does not describe a specific disease. On Saturday,

November 21, 2015 East Dallas Christian Church will be hosting a workshop on Dementia Signs and Symptoms, downstairs in our "Community Room"

10:00am - 12:00pm. The workshop will be presented by Chaplain Sherry Shanks, oncology and geriatrics chaplain at Baylor University Medical Center.
