T he Administration and Advisory Council are charged with the task of setting tuition and fees for the upcoming school year in November. Once prepared, the proposed budget requires the approval of our Chancellor and the TCH Board of Pastors. With the unpredictability of the national economy, personal finances are on everyones mind. Administrators across the country struggle with this question: How do we provide quality Catholic education without depleting familieslimited financial resources? Tuition increases annually because expenses increase annually. Teacher and staff salaries and benefits account for 77.2% of the total budget. Diocesan officials have told schools to prepare for a 10% increase in health care costs. We also anticipate cost increases in fuel, electricity, and paper products. The administration and advisory council have accepted the charge to be stewards for the school. We will try to keep tuition as moderate as possible to meet the resources of our families, but tuition will increase every year to meet the financial needs of the school. As we enter the season of Thanksgiving and Advent there are many opportunities for our TCH family to become engaged in our community in hopes that some joy and happiness is brought into the lives of many who have felt only sorrow and sadness. We will have a special Veterans Day Mass on Thursday, November 13, honoring all military in attendance. On Thanksgiving Day, the sophomore class will sponsor the annual TCH Feeds the Hungry event. Our cafeteria will open for students, faculty, and parent volunteers to cook and deliver a traditional turkey and dressing meal with all the fixings to the hungry in our area. Last year 480 meals were delivered. On November 6, TCH will welcome several hundred eighth graders from feeder and other schools for 8th Grade Day. Students and parents will be invited to attend our Open House on the campus beginning at 4:00 p.m. The final tour group begins at 6:00 p.m. Our Admissions Director Maria Hanes does an outstanding job preparing for these events, but we could not do it without the help of our students, faculty, and parent volunteers. All of us at TCH must be able to articulate our mission and purpose clearly and we must also be able to match our beliefs with our actions. The dedication and skill of our learned community, coupled with the enthusiasm and support of our parent groups is the basis of the TCH spirit. It is a place of joy where people teach and learn in a kinship of shared work, play, prayer, creativity, and achievement. As we look to the future, that spirit will remain vital to Teurlings Catholic. My name is Michael H. Boyer and I approve this message. FOR YOUR INFORMATION... DISCIPLINE Bruce Baudier - Assistant Principal

We Trust - We Trust - We Trust If you ask your son/daughter if they feel “safe” on the Teurlings

campus during the school day, I think that you would find that, to a

person, students feel “safe” - safe from physical harm. Also, if/when

teasing crosses the line there are faculty members to whom students

can go to have the situation addressed quickly.

What about when money and personal items are stolen from

booksacks, gym lockers, or school lockers? That scenario

unfortunately, does occur on the TCH campus. Recently, a number of

students (boys) had considerable amounts of cash ($80, $60, $40)

along with watches stolen from their wallets and pants pockets in the

PE locker rooms. The downside is that theft of this kind is almost

impossible to solve. The PE instructors are locking PE doors and

reminding boys that there are a number of empty lockers which

students can put valuables in and lock the locker with their own lock.

Trust we do, often, at TCH. But, we obviously have those who

steal from others which causes “trust” to be diminished. Please speak

with your son/daughter about theft issues and remind them to place

their valuables in a safe place during the school day. Also, if they have

any information on the stolen items to please see Mr. Baudier.

Texting, Sexting, Cyber-Bullying, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat,

Facebook, Twitter…and there’s more?

“What, I deleted it already-they won’t even see it” Yes, parents, many of your sons/daughters are knee deep into all of these social media experiences. And,

while you say “My child doesn’t have one of those accounts so we are O.K.”..…every kid has access to these sites/

areas through their friends’ involvement.

Contrary to the kids’ belief; “Delete” only means you can’t see it now! Officer Marty often explains to the

students that IP addresses can be traced back to the specific computer/address. Also, phone “deleted” CAN be

retrieved if the need dictates.

Sending inappropriate pictures: How a student sets his/her self up for possible pornography/distribution of

pornography charges. Making threats to a person on Instagram, Twitter, etc.: What constitutes a crime?

All this and much more is being covered and discussed with your sons/daughters. Please ask them what

they learned that they didn’t know prior to the presentation.

We sincerely hope that the students listen and process the information so in the future they will be able to

make informed, sound decisions when using the plethora of social media sites available to them.

Dr. Nathan Roberts - ULL College of

Education and Lawrence “Moose”

Billeaud - Criminal Defense Attorney,

presented to the TCH student body a talk on

the ramifications of drugs, sexting,

cyberbullying, and vandalism.

Students learned the consequences of

these actions and how they can impact their

future and careers.

Page 3: From Our Principal T he Administration and Advisory ... RESOURCES/Rebelation...T he Administration and Advisory Council are charged with the ... The administration and advisory council

As you can see, the percentage of our

students earning an F or even a D is

very low. Please also keep in mind

that this is a grade level breakdown,

not a subject breakdown. Ninth

graders take either Algebra I or

Geometry; 10th graders are enrolled in

Geometry or Algebra II; 11th graders

are in either Algebra II or Advanced

Math I; and 12th graders may be in

Advanced Math I, Advanced Math II,

Calculus, or Financial Math. The

grades at either end of the spectrum

(high or low) come from all subjects.

There are students in honors and dual enrollment classes with low grades, just as there

are many students in regular classes with A and B grades. Our guidance department is

meeting with students who had failing grades for the 1st Quarter in all subjects.

Guidance Counselors Anna Proctor, Dawn Aucoin and I, met with teachers at all grade

levels the week of October 20 so we can find those students who need additional help or

encouragement. In all our subjects, not just in math, the teachers are also reaching out to

students and their parents through emails and conferences, hoping to bring out the best

in each and every one of our students.

ACADEMICS

If you are the parent of the typical teen, I know you

have heard this at one time or another: “but Mom,

EVERYONE failed the test” or “No one is passing the

class” or even “Dad, no one turned in the homework

because no one knew the assignment.”

I am sure that most of you take such statements with a

grain of salt, knowing that most teens tend to

“exaggerate” the situation when faced with a bad

grade. I can assure you that we have NO class on our

campus with a failure rate of 100%, or 50% or even

25%. No class on our campus has a “D” rate of 25%

or more, either. It just does not happen. Honestly, it is

rare for even a single test to come in with grades in

that range. On that very rare occasion, teachers meet

with me or their department head and we come up

with a plan to re-teach the material and reassess

student mastery. That does not mean that another test

is always given. It depends on the situation. If half a

class receives an A or B on a test and the other half

does poorly, we look at circumstances that might have

prompted the lower grades. Was there an activity the

night before so that some students did not study? You

would be surprised how often that happens – and how

it is impossible, with our rolling schedule – to

guarantee that there will be no test at all on the day

after a big basketball or baseball game or some

equally important event. Our students are extremely

honest and often admit they did not study or read the

assigned material.

So, are you curious how your student fared in

comparison to other students in his or her grade on the

1st Quarter report card? The chart below shows a

breakdown of math grades, by grade level, for all our

students. Why did I choose math? Because by far the

biggest number of complaints, concerns, and

questions I address from parents deal with math. For

many of our students, math is the hardest subject out

of the seven classes, especially for those with a

limited background in math fundamentals, poor study

habits, or who just plain don’t like math for one

reason or another.

Here are the 1st Quarter breakdowns for

English and Science:

XL Card and Academic Pep Rally/Fall Awards

Qualifications There seems to be some confusion about who qualifies for our various awards programs. Here is a quick breakdown: *Fall Awards – based on the final GPA from the previous year; must be a 3.0 or higher *XL Cards and quarterly incentives – based on the GPA from the quarter, must be a 3.0 or higher

*Academic Pep Rally – based on the first semester grades, must be a 3.0 or higher with no grade of C or below on the semester averages (students may have a C for a quarter grade, as long as the semester grade is an A or B)

Pro-Life Rosary A BEAUTIFUL Pro-Life “Living” Rosary was held in the RebelDome on Thursday, October 2nd. As each prayer of the rosary was recited, a 2nd grade student from St. Genevieve Elementary School presented a rose at the foot of the Our Lady’s Statue. In a special way we were able to show our respect for life and honor those who are una-ble to speak up for themselves! Thanks to Ms. Caroline Savoie, Mrs. Kristina Lavergne, the Senior class, and SGS 2nd graders for their efforts!

Our first “Spirit Renewal Night” was held in the Chapel on Wednesday, October 1st. All student

ministers came together in fellowship, prayer, and

reflection. We will continue to meet every other month

to nurture those who minister on campus!

Our next “Spirit Renewal Night” will be on

Wednesday, December 3rd!

Special thanks to all Campus Ministry Club members who volunteered their time and

energy at the Down’s Syndrome Buddy Walk on Saturday, October 25th!

We had a great time!

REBELS FOR LIFE Rebels for Life club members were commissioned at

their opening Liturgy on the evening of October 6th. Our Chancellor, Fr. Hampton Davis was the celebrant. Club

members committed themselves to their mission of defending human life at all ages and in all

circumstances, and to pray for the grace to fulfill this mission. Many of the club's 87 members were in attendance as well as their parents and siblings.

Throughout the year Rebels for Life will be working on different projects and events including diaper drives for

the local Crisis Pregnancy Center, the Baby Bottle Campaign for the Desormeaux Foundation, trips to vari-

ous nursing homes, and inviting pro-life and chastity speakers to campus.

(See pictures on Page 8)

The Junior Retreat was held at the St. Elizabeth Seton Church Hall on October 8th! The retreat provided an opportunity for the juniors to spend time as a class,

get to know one another better, and deepen their desire to know Christ through Adoration, reflection and prayer. Special thanks to the Campus Ministry Class, Mr. Colby Allen, Ms. Caroline Savoie, and Mr. John Paoletti for helping to make this retreat special!

The $10,000 Dance/Raffle and Cast Reveal

October 18, 2014 Teurlings Catholic High School would like to thank our dedicated supporters who made this year's $10,000

dance and Cast Reveal Party such a success. Because of you, the Teurlings All Sports Club (TASC) raised over $30,000 for the athletic needs of the school and $8,750 for the stadium. The Rebels Academic Backers Club

(RABC) raised $5,800 from their live auction items and $1,200 from the Disco Ball Necklace Raffle. These proceeds are earmarked for technology. We were also able to procure numerous sponsorships towards our

Dancing with the Rebel Stars Event. We look forward to seeing all of you on April 18, 2015 for our inaugural Dancing With the Rebel Stars.
