February/March 2014 Adar I/Adar II 5774 Volume 18, Issue 2
From Our Spiritual Leader
Cantor Henry Shapiro
Heat Wave It’s funny how I thought the time of last month’s scribe was, ‘the worst of winter’. I mean with global warming and all, how much longer could we have winter weather? That was not the right question, the question became - how low could we go? Well, I was way off and now the recent above freezing temperature seems like a warm spell. Heck, anything above single digit temperatures seems warm. At one time, I thought Pittsburgh would be become the ideal temperate climate in the US and the new vacation ‘mecca’. I now think we should try to host the next winter Olympics! This is a leap year on the Jewish calendar which adds a whole month. That makes two months of Adar - Adar 1 and Adar 2. By the way, the Jewish calendar is a 19 year cycle and leap years fall on 7 of those 19 years. The holiday of Purim is on the 15th of the month and in a leap year, it’s on the 2nd month, Adar 2. Not much happens on the first month. The 15th of Adar is called Purim katan, little Purim, but there are only a few changes in the daily prayers. Like ‘Thanksgivvukah’, it’s aligned on the Jewish calendar with one on the secular, this time it’s St. Valentine’s Day. PS The above was written before all the personal tragedies these past couple weeks. With the deaths of my mother Dorrie, Debbie Lucker, and Michael Jacob’s Uncle Pete and sister Susan, not only has this been a cold winter, it’s been a harsh one. I won’t dwell on it in these

pages, but I will say I truly appreciate the outpouring from PJC members and the visits I’ve received. As hard as it’s been, we can all find some comfort in community and friends when we pull together to support one another. PPS Spread the Word. How can you help for the upcoming events at PJC? Spread the word. We’d like you to sign up for our 1st wine tasting, that’s fersure. But please send it out to your friends and the groups you’re connected with. I did an informal poll of some friends and colleagues and I found that for the events they held, about 70% of the publicity went through email and internet. That’s the new word-of-mouth. Send a link in your emails to parkwayjewishcenter.org/wine or forward the emails that Bob Korfin sends out. Forming a New Programming Committee I’m looking for interested people to plan fun and social activities for PJC. Both for our own enjoyment but also to entice others to come check us out. The wine tasting (see page 10) is an example with other possible events that combine food, fun and entertainment. Drop me a line or send an email to Gail. Let’s find a time to get together and brainstorm. Volunteers Needed With all the activities and events going on this month, we will need some help, especially in the kitchen. If you’re available, please contact Gail at the office. Birthday Kiddush Sponsors Because of the postponement of our February Birthday kiddush, we combined it with March for the Feb 28th/March Shabbat. We had a nice turnout and quite a number of sponsors. A great time was had by all. We're hoping to do the same for those with April birthdays. If you have a April birthday or want to honor someone who does, be a sponsor and come celebrate with PJC. Call or email Leslie Rubin or Diane Bloomfield. Haftarah Anniversary Charlie Rubin will read haftarah on March 8th, which is the anniversary of his bar mitzvah portion. Please contact us if you have a Haftarah you’d like to read. There will be publicity coming out through the media but I’ve also been contacting Jewish and other organizations who may be interested. We can reserve a table or part of one for their party. If you want, I can contact them for you. Cantor Henry Shapiro

Just after I finished writing thank you notes for your generous contributions to PJC’s various funds in memory of my sister, Susan, Gail Levine sent us a long list of contributors for the delicious fruit and pastry trays sent to Independence Court for the service we had on the Sunday after my sister’s funeral in Harrisburg. We would like to thank you for your donations for these trays and also for joining us on a snowy Sunday afternoon so that Dad could be part of a memorial service for his daughter. Knowing how much friends care during this difficult time has made it easier to bear. Your kindness and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin We’ve all heard the old saying, “If these walls could talk, what tales they would tell.” It is the same way with the seats in our sanctuary. It is that way at least with the 1st seat on the 4th row. Several memorable members made that their PJC home away from home. Isadore (Izzy) Losman was the first member I knew who sat there. He was tall with a booming voice. In fact, his hearing was not too good and often he spoke louder than needed and it made for some interesting if not unfiltered comments during the service. Izzy reminded me of a character you meet in a Damon Runyon novel. He was a cross between a religious man and one of the Bowery Boys or Eastside Kids from the movies. Something about the things that Izzy said or the way he said them led you to believe he had an interesting if not colorful life in his prime. I remember when Susan Mazer’s parents Debbie and Harry Cohen made the move from Erie to Squirrel Hill. I mean, who moves to Pittsburgh from Erie at their age? What I do remember is how our members took to the Cohen couple; everyone loved to be in their company. They were the nicest of nice. They often came to shul together on a Friday evening but Harry was in that seat I mentioned above almost every Shabbos morning. He loved “schmoozing” with Persh, Herbie and Efrem. And it was rare on any given Saturday morning that he didn’t pull out an old article from the Erie newspaper to share with me. Some of the items he showed us were 50 years old or more but he preserved them in the way the Carnegie Museum maintains items in their collection. I remember vividly the day that Harry passed away. And I was honored to speak about him at his funeral. We draped a Tallis around his seat on the aisle for about a month after he died in his honor. Earlier in this bitter cold month of February, we said good-bye to Debbie Lucker. She too made the 1st seat, 4th row her very own. I looked forward to seeing her each week across the aisle from me. She was always impeccably yet tastefully dressed. Debbie had that smile that made you feel like she was especially pleased to see you. Debbie had major health issues, yet you would have never known. She wasn’t vain, she just didn’t wish to complain or make her problems yours. Debbie loved people in the way that Jewish people love latkes. And how she loved her little shul in Eastmont. She so looked forward to seeing everyone on Friday evenings as we looked forward to seeing and spending the hour with her. Even after all of these years, I would forget when to sit or stand during the service. Often, I would glance over at Debbie for her lead. For those who sit behind me at services on Friday evenings, don’t be surprised to see me sitting or standing at the wrong times from now on; I don’t have my Debbie across the aisle anymore. We may never see the likes of Izzy, Harry or Debbele again, but that’s okay. Our lives have been enriched by knowing them and sharing times with them on the 4th row, 1st seat. May their lives be for a blessing for all of us. And we will never forget them. And then we’ll talk again…..
