A Message from Rev. Roger McKinney

FROM OUR TRANSITIONAL PASTOR Grace to you and peace from God our Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Advent is here! Our worship during the Sundays of December will focus on stories from our Children of
God Storybook Bible related to the coming of the Christ Child. We will be looking at what we can learn
about being children of God from the coming of THE Child of God: Jesus Christ.
We will have an Advent Devotional Guide available for print and email distribution beginning Sunday,
Dec. 2. You are welcome to share the devotional guide, either in print or digital form, with as many
people as you think might be interested!
Our Young Disciples will be lighting the Advent wreath each Sunday during worship. And, they will lead
worship on Sunday, Dec. 23 with a presentation based on the classic children’s book, The Animals’
Christmas.
We of course will have a very special Christmas Eve worship service this year at 7:00 pm. Special
music for that service will be provided by Celtic musicians Brian Bigley and Kristen Capp.
http://www.brianbigleymusic.com/ They will join us in traditional Christmas music and offer special
Celtic arrangements for the service, under the direction of Amanda Powell.
Please also don’t forget Christmas gift giving opportunities through our congregation. A large variety of
gift cards are available through our Christian Women’s Fellowship, who use profits to pay for things like
church camp scholarships for our youth. Our Christmas Eve worship offering will go to Cleveland
Christian Home.
Also, instead of sending Christmas cards to church friends you can place a card on the tree in the back
of the sanctuary and make a donation which will go to Hiram Farm. We will publish all of the names
from the Card Tree in the January Church Life.
Now for a BUILDING PROJECT update. We recently were put in touch with a real estate development
company whose vice president lives a block away from our building and is interested in helping us. His
company has at least one client who is considering our project. We also are in conversation with a
large non-profit real estate development company who is considering our project. We should hear from
one or both of these developers before the end of the year. We remain hopeful that we will soon be
able to move forward.
Finally, our church rummage sale and art sale were a great success! So far we have earned over
$2300 from sale of sheet music, puppets, art and miscellaneous items, and we expect that amount to
continue to grow. Thanks to all who have helped so much with this project.
During this season I hope and pray that you will make some time in your schedule to contemplate the
mystery of the coming of the Christ Child into the world. May hope, peace, joy and love abound in your
life and your family this December!
Your partner in ministry,
Roger McKinney

Music News
Meet the Music Ministry
Claudia Vondriska
Did you go to church growing up? Tell us about it!
I am the eldest of 5 children, a true baby boomer. We were a
Catholic family and the children attended parochial school. My
8thgrade year was traumatic for me: the church went from Latin
to English and the music left a lot to be desired! I started to
become disenchanted with the Church, especially their treatment
of women and the superior attitude of the priest at the parish.
In my musical life, I had taken piano lessons throughout my
grade school years. When I began to attend the public school,
I learned to play the trombone during the summer before 9th grade
so I could join marching band and play in the concert band. That
was the best experience of my life; feeling part of a close-knit group
of like-minded teenagers. It was such a positive experience that I
continued in music. I always wanted to be a teacher, so I became
a music teacher, certified for grades K thru 12. Incidentally, my
supervisory teacher was Richard Huff (a DCC member).
What music or song did you most recently listen to?
I periodically go to You Tube to check out hymn arrangements.
The latest one that intrigued me is the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili: Baba Yetu.
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
My dream trip would be a small ship cruise down the St. Laurence Seaway, stopping at many
interesting places along the way culminating in the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
Tell us a memorable or funny story of something that has happened to you at DCC:
One unusual thing I do is count the number of Ron Werman’s puns in one service.
Tell us something about the DCC Music Ministry:
We are not unique in the size of our music ministry; however, we are a group that loves to sing,
prays through singing and making music, loves each other, breathes together, and our hearts beat
together.
Describe how you expand your spirituality in a few words:
So many books, so little time.

Save time and effort and hang a Christmas card on our tree to benefit Hiram Farm Our annual Christmas Card tree will
again be in the back of the sanctuary to decorate with greetings you wish for your church family. The money you save on stamps can be donated toward Hiram Farm for autistic adults. There will be envelopes for donations and hole puncher with yarn for hanging your card. Your name will be published so people know you wished them a blessed Christmas.

Global Ministries was introduced to Luci solar lights in 2015, and upon request of partners in the Congo, Global Ministries sent the first shipment of lights shortly after.
Luci lights, made by MPOWERED, Inc. are inflatable, lightweight, and affordable light sources that can emit light for up to 12 hours on each solar charge. Many of our Global Ministries partners work in communities that have limited or no access to electricity. Luci lights can
be used by Global Ministries partners in hospitals and health care clinics, in businesses run through microcredit programs, by refugees and internally displaced persons in refugee camps, or by children working on homework or playing. Luci lights provide partners with a light source that is more reliable, lightweight, compact, and powered by clean, renewable energy.
ICE Vigil Pastor Roger and some members from our church (visible – left to right – is Bonnie Goldner, Cara McKinney, Starla and Vienna Ling) gathered with others in front of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. The crowd’s presence with signs and their prayers are to encourage ICE to be fair and compassionate in the work they are tasked to do. Join in the next vigil Roger is leading on January 17th.

Golden Retriever named Teagan but I call her
Boo Boos.
How long have you been attending Disciples
Christian Church?
I’ve been attending DCC for over the past 2
years.
Where do you go to school and what grade

I’m in third grade at Gates Mills Elementary
What gives you joy?
Luisa and Sofia, gymnastics, my dog and slime.

Elders Meeting, Dec. 1st
Advent Prime Time
Prime Time will be participating in an Advent
Study titled, Advent Through the Eyes of Those
Who Waited by Carol A. Wehrheim. "First, the
prophets in the book of Isaiah present us with the
idea of waiting and preparing for the Messiah--our
work for Advent. Next we meet John the Baptist
who announces the coming of the Messiah. Mary,
the mother of Jesus, is the main subject of
sessions three and four. Protestants, until
recently, have not given her much consideration,
but we have much to learn about patience and
courage from the mother of Jesus. Finally, we
learn from Elizabeth about how to accept a
blessing so long in coming that it is no longer
expected"
The sessions will begin a week early, on
November 25, continue on Dec. 2, 16, and
23. Dec. 9th will be Prime Time participation in
the final preparation, wrapping and delivering of
Angel Christmas gifts for the children of those who
are clients of the Heights Emergency Food
Center.

The Disciples Book Club wii meet on Tuesday,
December 18 at 2:00 in the Chapel. They will be
discussing Susan Orlean’s new book, The Library
Book. In The Library Book, Orleans chronicles
the Los Angeles Public Library Fire of April 28,
1886. Weaving her lifelong love of books and
reading into an investigation of the fire, award
winning New York reporter, Orlean, delivers a
mesmerizing and uniquely compelling book that
tells the broader story of libraries and librarians in
a way that has never been done before.
December’s Community Meal will be Spaghetti
and meatballs.
