Saapho Project: results & conclusions
Saapho has been tested in three different prototypes, the last one at user’s home
during several months (3 users in Slovenia, 3 in Spain during 4 months)
CONCLUSIONS
1. The users confirmed the usefulness of the system, specially if living alone
2. Participation services were useful but limited (participants were “too” skilled)
3. Easyness of Installation and Remote Monitorization were not solved during the project

ACTION PLAN
1. A BUSINESS PARTNER who will trust you even if the solution is not market ready. Develop
an initial Business Plan.
2. MARKET RESEARCH. Avoid the theorization of what the client really wants: Ask him as if
you want to sell the solution (only then the usefulness is really tested). Start testing the
market size “selling” the protype and promoting through internet (Adwords: SEM and SEO).
3. MPV: Define a Minimum Viable Product that will solve the great pains of the user.
4. PROFESSIONAL USABILITY & DESIGN. Do rely in professional hands, create an own
brand.
5. IMPLEMENTATION and TESTING. Develop the solution as a whole (as a partner you will
only have a part of the product) and develop it using tools for quality software.
1. SELL THE PRODUCT.

CONCLUSIONS
1. The client wants a way to know at any moment where his
parent is and what he is doing. Mobile App for the sons.
2. The client wants his parent to be constantly monitorized by
professional carers who will contact him and control all is well,
reacting in case of emergency.
1. The technology has to be transparent. Seniors are afraid to be
stigmatized.
2. The client does not want to pay too much. Affordable.
3. The client would like that taking care of the parent impacted
less in his life
1. Participation is not a major pain.

you will solve and leave the rest behind. Define your minimum viable product.

Professional Usability and Design is one of the most forgotten features in
R&D Projects and a key differentiation point when choosing a solution.

From Project to Product the Saapho Experience
1. Typically in R&D Projects one partner will not have a whole ready-to-market
product because it is shared among partners. You need to re-develop parts that
the product needs and you do not have.
2. You need to remove parts that the real product does not need.
3. You need development using techniques for software quality and testing:
continous integration and unit testing (Jenkins)
4. Develop always having in mind API services for yourself or third-party companies
(WSO2). API-first design.

Business solutions: 1. Joint-venture. Interesting when a new service will be developed and both parties
have its own business
2. License with shared risk. Interesting when a company wants to sell a new
product that is not well tested and shares a risk with you. Only when the
adventure is profitable you will have the return
3. Going independently is not a current option, due to the lack of skills and time to
develop the product as a business (marketing, sales and promotion)
