Offshore Oil Exploration Chain
Founded 1973 by the late Torben Karlshoej Transnational company with more than 6,000
employees, representing 35 different nations. Head Office in Vancouver; 25 Site Offices around
the world. Transporter of approximately 10% of the world’s
seaborne oil

Offshore Oil Industry, brief historic summary• 1960s, shallow waters in the GOM, the Persian Gulf and around the North Sea basin
• 1970s huge deep water oil fields discovered in Bacia de Campos, off Brazil.
• By 2005, offshore oil production had grown to approximately 33% of global oil production
• Today offshore oil production represents between 35 - 37% of the world’s total oil production.
• FPSO and FSO units is an important part of the infrastructure for deepwater offshore development.
• BERYL field in North Sea (Mobil Exploration), first to use offshore loading on a permanent basis. (1976)
• May 1979: Decision to offload all oil from Statfjord (NCS) with Shuttle tankers. First load December 1979
• First Offshore loading DP trials in 1982 @Statfjord field. Statoil decided in1984 to standardize offshore loading on DP operated shuttle tankers.
• Today nearly all shuttle operations in North Sea are performed by use of DP shuttle tankers.

Challenges at the start of the millennium
• Yr.1980: 4 shuttletankers →Yr. 2000: ≈ 60 shuttletankers. = Increased pressure on competentpersonnel and suitable tonnage.
• Late 90’s: Alarming increase in number of incidents = Authorities and Field Operators showing a rising concern related to Q A of offshore loading operations.
• Rules and regulations related to offshore loading operations were introduced in leading marketsas Norway and UK.
• As the world leading operator of shuttle tankers, Navion (now TK) took the initiative to a Joint Industry Project (JIP) , named DP 2000. (later DP CAP™)

Major incidents: • One collision between shuttle tanker and FPSO• Several severe drive-off incidents resulting in damage of loading
hose, breakage of hawser
Minor incidents:• Erraneous positioning reference system resulting in loss of position• Imperfect DP software having undesirable effects on the positioning

Junior officers and the Captain share a lotmore information and experience than before.
If he get into a situation that has been discussed with the others, the juniors feel better prepared
2003: (1. Officer about DP-CAP™)“Earlier there could be 6 to 8 weeks between every time I tried operating the DP.
Of course I could feel a bit unsecure sitting on the bridge with all the responsibility. Now I operate the DP more often.”

Truly superior DPO’s are those who use
their superior judgement to avoid
those situations where they might have
to use their superior skills.
