1 ,, 8 Newsletter No. 38 - Term 4 Week 8 29 November 2018 From the Acting Principal…… The sun was shining for the Junior Athletics Day on Monday, which was a great success thanks to the hard work and organisation of Jess Swingler and the junior school teachers. With all of our junior students participating in the Athletics Day it made me think about what a great sport athletics is and how it is a great metaphor for education. More so than almost any other sport, athletics is all about continual improvement and aiming for your Personal Best. At the end of an athletics event it is not uncommon to see an athlete walking off with a big smile and high-fiving their coach even though they may have finished 7 th . This is not something you see at the end of a tennis match or a game of football (even if you did give your best performance). In athletics the focus is narrowed to working on what you can control; which is your own effort and performance. This aligns with the mindset we try to build in our students at school. It doesn't matter how you perform compared to the others in the class, it just matters that you are able to work on your own self-improvement to achieve your personal best. Japanese Evening The Japanese Evening 2018 was a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the Japanese culture. Many families enjoyed sushi making, origami classes and presentations from our Branch Out Ambassadors. The evening finished with a breathtaking performance by professional Koto Harp players. We appreciate the efforts of Hiromi Hagihara and Jess White for continually providing our students with diverse learning opportunities. Did you know that the students who travelled to Japan were featured in the Maroondah Leader this week? In the article the children talked about their favourite experiences and memories of Japan. Congratulations Our congratulations go to Carmel D’Amico & Steve Kenna on the arrival on Monday night of their beautiful baby girl, Ivy Rose. We are all looking forward to meeting her soon. Market night and Family Carols We are looking forward to our Carols Night next Thursday evening. If you listen very carefully, I think you will be able to hear sleigh bells ringing and voices singing as we rehearse the tunes for the performances. Please come along to the Night Market organised by our fundraising committee, and enjoy a sausage from the Parents & Friends BBQ. There could be a special visitor, with a red suit and some white whiskers. I wonder who that could be! As this is my first Carols experience at Kalinda Primary School, I am reliably informed that it is a real highlight of the year and one event that I am very much looking forward to. Newsletter No. 38 - Term 4 – Week 8 29 November 2018

From the Acting Principal…… The sun was shining for the Junior Athletics Day on Monday, which was a great success thanks to the hard work and organisation of Jess Swingler and the junior school teachers. With all of our junior students participating in the Athletics Day it made me think about what a great sport athletics is and how it is a great metaphor for education. More so than almost any other sport, athletics is all about continual improvement and aiming for your Personal Best. At the end of an athletics event it is not uncommon to see an athlete walking off with a big smile and high-fiving their coach even though they may have finished 7th. It doesn't matter how you perform compared to the others in the class, it just matters that you are able to work on your own self-improvement to achieve your personal best.

Japanese Evening The Japanese Evening 2018 was a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the Japanese culture. Kalinda’Wishing Tree

Monday 3rd– Friday 14th

December

Kalinda Primary School Junior School Council Reps would like to ask if you are able to

bring a pre–loved, or a new present for the Kalinda Wishing Tree.

The presents can be placed under our Christmas tree in the office foyer from

Monday, 3rd December until Friday, 14th December. The presents will be delivered to

children from ages 5 to 16 years whose parents cannot afford presents.

The donations will go to Doncare.

Christmas Toy Giving Program at Doncare

Since 1969, Doncare has provided support to families, the aged, youth and disadvantaged in the City of Manningham and surrounding areas. Our approach to working with the community operates on three levels: providing assistance, prevention through support and education and enlisting community involvement. Each year Doncare coordinates a Christmas Program and new toys are distributed to families of low income with children, under the age of 18 years who otherwise may find it a challenge to provide the type of Christmas for their families that everyone hopes to enjoy at this time of the year. Each and every one of those toys comes to Doncare from generous donations from individuals, families, schools and groups in the community over November and December and donations are always welcome and appreciated.

Please bring the presents in from Monday, 3rd – Friday, 14th December. The presents do not need to be wrapped, and can be suitable

for children aged 5 to 16 years.

Thank you very much from the 2018 JSC Reps & Doncare and Merry Christmas to all families.

Canteen News ICE CREAM DAY – Apologies - No late orders can be accepted, orders are now closed. We need plenty of helpers on the day – please let me know if you can help out. NEW MENU – The new menu is available on our website under “Canteen” and “Notices & Forms”. Spare copies are available at the office. Please dispose of your old menu. The new online menu shows the “Healthy Traffic Light” system, with some areas in green, some in orange and some in red. The green writing shows foods that are healthy and can be eaten at any time. The items in orange means that it’s quite okay to have them sometimes, and the items in red are those that should only be eaten as a very special treat. You can use this as a guide for your child’s choices. FUTURE DATES: 4th December - Special Food Day – Ice Cream Day 14th December - Last day for lunch orders for 2018.

Branch Out Japan Trip Report by Thiyara My host family treated me like royalty, they were extremely kind and their house was filled with love, joy and smiles. Each morning we woke up at 6am to catch the bus to school. We always ate dinner at their traditional Japanese table which is very small. You actually have to sit on the floor to be at its height. At that table we only ate traditional Japanese food, made by my host dad. He’s an amazing chef! I spent most of my money at Aeon Mall. Which is one of the largest shopping centres in Ibaraki. They had a photo booth there, so my host sister (Sara) and I took a bunch of photos. The weekend was jam-packed with amazing activities. We went the beautiful Fukuroda Falls. It was breathtakingly tall! It’s also known as the Lovers Sanctuary. We then made traditional handmade Japanese sweets out of dough. At a Japanese sweet store. It was mouth-wateringly delicious but very sweet. Later that morning we picked apples at the apple orchard. It was filled with a huge variety of apples and I tested some of them as well. Later, we drove up to Ryujin Big Suspension Bridge. Which is the oldest suspension bridge in Japan. To end the weekend, we did a pottery class, and we designed and coloured our own plates. Edo Wonderland, was the first place we went as a whole group! It’s an action packed, ninja styled place, set in the Edo period. There were so many ancient styled buildings. One of the activities was you sit in a carriage, and then you’d get carried by two men. We got to dress-up as ninjas and sneak around the place acting like them as well. There was even a ninja show, which included aggressive fighting and insane flips! It was a huge surprise to see Yoko Sensei travelled who had 3 hours to visit us, so she spent the day at Edo Wonderland with us. Towards the end of our day, there was a fun-filled parade which included a “Oiran” (most geisha girl in the edo period). She was wearing an insanely heavy kimono (25kg) and high platform geta shoes. Becoming a ninja for a day, and experiencing the Edo Lifestyle was a memorable experience. The Japan Branch Out Tour gave me the opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture and lifestyle. It’s also helped me become a more independent and appreciative person.

Kalinda Wellbeing

How do you Help your Child Develop Positive Body Image? How people feel about their body contributes to mental health and the amount of exposure our children get to the ‘perfect body’ via social media and television only adds to this impact. When a young person doesn’t feel good about themselves or their body it can have an impact on their school work, their friendships and the sports/physical activity they engage in. While this may be more of a concern for upper primary school, children start to become aware of how they differ from others around eight years of age. Your influence as a parent can help your child develop some perspective around how they feel about their body. If a parent is constantly dieting and looking at themselves critically then it’s likely the child will also learn to do this as well, particularly if they are also told they have inherited ‘mum or dad’s body shape’. As a parent it’s important that you understand that how you feel about your own body and the way you react to this is important as your children are learning from you. If you are concerned about your child’s body shape it is very important to reinforce in actions and words that body weight or shape has nothing to do with how you feel about your child. Home needs to be a safe place where the child feels comfortable to talk or not talk about their weight. If you are concerned about your child’s weight it is best to seek assistance from a health professional. Here are some tips for parents to assist their kids to develop a healthy body image:

Avoid talking about or criticizing anyone’s appearance. The more you talk about ‘looks’ the more

important you make them.

Value yourself as a whole person not just a physical thing.

Help your child to challenge beauty ideals portrayed in the media.

Be active and move your body to be fit and strong not to get to an ‘ideal or better’ body.

Focus on people’s strengths and talents rather than physical attributes.

Avoid criticizing your child’s body shape and weight. Always be accepting and if you are making

changes to your food intake ensure the changes are sensible and are made by the entire family not

enforced on one person. Diets don’t work and they are a predictor or future weight gain and poor body

image.

Let’s Talk About Sleep! Some interesting information that came out of the Student Survey that our senior school students undertake, is that many of our students struggle to get enough sleep. In this very busy world, it can be hard to wind down in the lead up to bedtime. Fortunately, there are some really simple things we can do to aide ourselves in getting enough sleep. In a technology driven world it can be hard to switch off, but it is recommended that devices are turned off at least an hour before bedtime. The content that we watch is often mentally stimulating and the artificial light they emit can trick the brain into thinking it is daylight. Similarly, it is recommended that the bed is kept as a place that is only for sleeping. Using devices, drawing or watching TV in bed can cause an association between bedtime and active thinking. Instead, establishing a bedtime routine can help children relax for bedtime. Some ideas that you might be interested in trying are some short, simple exercise such as yoga, reading a picture book or a few chapters of a novel and some simple mindfulness exercises, like a body scan. While we all enjoy a late night or a sleep in over the weekend, these things can damage the routines we are trying to establish. Finally, it can be really beneficial for our children to see adults engage in these practices! As adults, we should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night and our kids need even more to be ready to run, play and learn every day. Sleep well! The Kalinda Wellbeing Team

STATE HOOP TIME FINALS! On 27th November our All Stars Mixed Hoop Time Team competed in the Hoop Time State Championships. Our first game was at 10:10 against Ferny Creek which was a very intense first game, we ended up winning by 3 points. The next game was against St Andrews of Werribee, at half time we were down by 4 points, they made us step up our game and with 2 minutes to go we got the lead and won by 5 points. Our third game was against Sacred Heart Sandringham they worked really well together and were a very strong team and, unfortunately, we lost that game by 6 points. Our final game in our pool was against St Patricks they were also a very strong team. During the game we kept level with them, they scored the final

basket so we drew. We ended up with two wins, a loss and a draw so we finished second in our pool. We. then played Holy Trinity in the elimination finals, we were playing really well in the first half the scores were 15-8 we ended up losing and only scoring one goal in the second half, they won by 5 points. We then finished the day off with a parade, were we walked around the basketball court together as a team while everyone cheered us on. Overall it was an amazing experience and we all had so much fun. At the Division level there were 400 teams, at the Regional level they narrowed it down to 100 teams, and for the State level they narrowed it down once again to 20 teams. We ended up finishing in the top 10 best Hoop Time teams in Victoria. So, we are really proud of our efforts! We would really love to thank Nat for all the training sessions she has held for us here at school, and her fantastic support and coaching. From Ben and Jade

T20 Cricket Regional Finals! On Monday, 26th November, the Grade 5/6 All Stars Boys and Girls teams competed in T20 Cricket Regional Finals. On the day, both teams (girls and boys) proved to be a very competitive side. The girls won three out of the four games they played, however, they missed out on percentage on playing in the grand final. Therefore, they placed third overall on the day. There was excellent bouts of play across all three matches. The boys won all three games, therefore were successful in qualifying for the Grand Final. The boys were eager and ready to play the Grand Final against Donvale. They batted and scored a total of 119 runs, a good score but not as high as their previous games. Spirits were low when the boys went in to bowl. They needed to work hard to prevent Donvale from scoring high. The game continued to be tense for both the spectators and their supporters as the scores were extremely close and Kalinda was in with a chance to win the Grand Final and go through to play at State level. There was much excitement from the boys and the crowd when towards the end of the match Ben caught a player, which then provided a better chance to win. Unfortunately, the efforts from our fantastic All Stars Boys Team were not good enough to prevent Donvale from winning. Our boys lost to Donvale by just 11 runs. Despite this, the girls and boys teams were both extremely proud of their efforts and enjoyed the day. Thank you to Craig from Warranwood Sharks Cricket club and Scott for coaching us on the day.
