24th November 2017 Persistence Confidence Getting Along Organisation Resilience From the Assistant Principal Victorian School Garden Awards We are incredibly proud of our garden at Bonbeach PS. So many staff, parents, volunteers, community members and students have worked and collaborated on the garden over many, many years. We stepped things up a notch this year with the Garden Program (run by Jade and Amy – with support from the classroom teachers) becoming a part of the curriculum, with explicit teaching links to Science, Mathematics, and Design, Creativity and Technology. I am extremely pleased to announce that the students at Bonbeach Primary School were selected to plant the commemorative tree before the awards ceremony, we were then announced as the winner of the Regional Award, then a State Award and then….The Kevin Heinz Perpetual Award! (Bonbeach PS name will be engraved on this award and returned in 12 monthstime). This is an amazing achievement and testament to the commitment and passion of all involved. The awards can be viewed at the front office! Thank you for being a great community that has supported this. Transition Program Begins! Today was our first Transitionsession. 2018 Preps came to Bonbeach, and all other students moved up a class. The transition sessions are primarily designed so that students can familiarise themselves with a new environment (in some cases) and also to re-establish friendships and for the teachers to see how various student combinations work together. Please do not read too much into the teachers that were in the class for the first session. To help with the first transition session, some teachers moved up with the year level, and therefore some moved down. Teachers for classes will be confirmed in a few weeks. We have 3 more transition sessions: 28 November, 7 December and 12 December (this is also the state wide Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Day). RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge Good luck to the students who are involved in the 2017 Energy Breakthrough Challenge (HPV – Human Powered Vehicle and Pushcart teams) over the next few days. This is the culmination of work that began in Term 1 this year. There has been training before school, after school and on some weekends. However, this is not just a race, there is a Display and Presentation where the members of the team need to present information to a panel of judges. Thank you to the parents who have supported the students, including being in Maryborough camping out in the middle of one of the ovals with 10,000 other parents and children and, Mr Jones and Mr Mac who are in Maryborough for the rest of the week. You can catch up with Live Resultsthroughout the day here https://www.racveb.com/liveresults/.

Transition Program Begins! Today was our first ‘Transition’ session. 2018 Preps came to Bonbeach, and all other students moved up a class. The transition sessions are primarily designed so that students can familiarise themselves with a new environment (in some cases) and also to re-establish friendships and for the teachers to see how various student combinations work together. Compass School Manager The school management system, Compass is being introduced in 2018….sort of. Before the end of the year, all families will be receiving a letter that explains what Compass does, and a username and password. The Compass Parent Portal is an integrated, online portal that allows you to access up-to-date and meaningful information about our school and your child's progress. Compass includes many different features, including the ability to: Monitor your child's attendance, and enter an explanation for absence or

lateness Update your family contact information View a school calendar Download and view your child's Semester Reports and Progress Reports Book Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences Pay and provide consent for events and school fees (from 2018 – not available for booklist

payments now)

You can download the app now for your iPad, iPhone and Android devices.

Helpers Morning Tea We are so appreciative of the help that our parent community provides through many different activities - from classroom helpers through to serving on School Council. The staff and school would like to thank you by providing a morning tea for our great helpers. Please see the information attached later in this newsletter.

Warmer Weather It has been great to see how many of our students are ‘slapping’ on sunscreen each day before heading outside at recess and lunchtime. However, some students are forgetting to wear their hats. It is compulsory that all students wear hats during this time of the year. If you haven’t seen your child’s hat for a while, please ask him/her where it is – we seem to have plenty of unnamed ones in Lost Property at the moment.

YCDI Parent Sessions Earlier this year, Mr Akeroyd organised an Information session regarding Bonbeach Primary School’s social skills program – You Can Do It (YCDI), which was extremely well attended. Due to overwhelming parent interest, the school bought the YCDI Parent Pack, and sessions were run throughout the year. I would like to thank Annamaria Santa for taking on the presenting role, and drumming up support before each session. We are hoping that we can offer this again next year, tackling some of the other topics not covered in 2017.

Leaving Bonbeach at the end of the year? It is a busy time of the year, and we sometimes forget to do things. If you have a child leaving Bonbeach PS (except Grade 6 students), please inform the Office in writing as soon as possible.

Grade 5/6 Camp

One of my favourite parts of camp was when I got a bullseye in archery as I've never done archery before. When i dropped on the giant swing it felt like all my insides came out of my face! Isabel The best part of camp was the flying fox as I've never done it before. There were spiders in our cabin though but Mr Mac was chief spider catcher!! Thanks Mr Mac!!! Chloe I liked camp because they had really fun activities and I've been dreaming about the giant swing since I got home from camp! Ace I loved camp, my favourite part was red faces because I won!!!! Christopher I loved the circuitron as Mr Mac spun me really fast - it was fun! Josh I loved camp and the food was delicious. The activities were fun despite the rain Jordan The circuitron was great as I've never been on it before. Olivia Camp was fun because I got to try heaps of new things that I've never done! Patrick The food was amazing and I loved the trampolines. Ruth I really loved how we just got to spend 3 days with just the grade 6s and the teachers. The teachers were actually funny for once! Indi
