From the desk of

Heather Leveck,

Executive Director

Our winter arrived long before winter officially arrived. November came in like a lion so who knows what March may bring us! There are just too many jokes about the cold that I could make so

I will leave the topic alone for Dan Duran and Peter Fialkowski to address.

Let’s retract a little, and I will begin by wishing each and every one of you a heartfelt Happy New Year. I truly hope that 2019 will be the year that all of your dreams and wishes come true with a vengeance. Whatever your resolutions be, I’m sure that you will have no problem maintaining them, and you will be an even better person because of them.

My husband Chris, son Caleb and I once again presented the Leveck Family Christmas dinner on Christmas Day at the Haven. I would like to thank everyone who assisted with the great day and to all of you who attended. I hope that the event was one of the highlights of your festive season. With any luck, we will do it all again for Christmas 2019.

Things continue to heat up at Activity Haven as we continue to add new programs and test the water for some creative and excitingly wild special events. Last year we added Activity Haven’s Got Talent, Dog Days of Summer and Dion Gemmiti’s Community Cares to our repertoire, but hang on to your hats when you see what’s coming this year. I will be hosting our annual planning session with the staff soon, after which I will make some announcements. Watch the bulletin boards and our facebook page for the news.

I am sure that you have noticed the refreshed look of some of our painted halls and washrooms and there is more to come. Isn’t it amazing what a coat of paint can do? Watch for more refreshing, little by little, as time and budget allows. You are invited in to the office to visit Boris, who is collecting loose change to help with the expense of paint. Any noisy or quiet donations to Boris would be greatly appreciated.

A New Year has given me cause to ponder. I think that the longer we live the more we realize just how fleeting these years are and just how important it is to maximize the potential of each year for being what we ought to be and doing what we ought to do. Losing both of my parents in 2018 made for a rough year. As we launch ourselves into a new year, loaded with fresh starts and crisp beginnings, I hope that 2019 will be as stellar a year for you as I know it is going to be for me., and all of us here at Activity Haven.

With love,

Heather. [email protected]

We work closely with seniors, and those suffering from mobility, flexibility and other physical limitations, to solve challenging accessibility issues.

Our rolling shelves eliminate wasted time and the painful effort of looking for items in the back of the cupboards and offer renewed

independence to seniors. You now have everything at your fingertips with easy to roll shelves.

Gliding Shelf Solutions can create a roll out pantry, use the space in a hidden corner, or even under the sink.

As a Canadian company we employ Canadian experienced craftsman, use high quality materials and have no shipping charges.

Mentastics mindful movements are a form of movement re-education offering a way of experiencing your physical condition in a lighter freer way; with the potential to access deep relaxation as well as rejuvenation. Mentastics movements are the ‘exercise’ or ‘daily living’ component of The Trager Approach.

These movements involve ‘playing’ with the ‘weight’ of any particular part of the body to access this feeling of release and letting go of tension/pain, and increasing mobility where it is decreased. Mentastics offers the opportunity to inquire/notice where we hold tension/pain or restriction and to become more aware of how that feels and through these intuitively directed movements find a way gently to release restrictions.

There is a positive direct effect on our nervous system.

This is fun and easy to do, and can be done standing or sitting, and does not involve a lot of effort. The results are amazing. Once we have a sense of what Mentastics are about, we can create our own. They are intended to be integrated into daily life to promote our own well being. Michelle has been teaching mentastics since January 2014, and has been involved with The Trager Approach since 1990.

Michelle Godfrey is a Certified Trager Practitioner, and is looking forward to showing you what mindful movements can do in your life.

Yoga mindful movements with Michelle will begin January 9 at 2 p.m. Visit the Activity Haven office to sign up for her class, and for more information.

Ontario In Winter Tis winter in Ontario

And the gently breezes blow,

70 miles per hour, at 52 below!

Oh, how I love Ontario,

When the snow’s up to your butt;

You take a breath of winter air,

And your nose then freezes shut.

Yes, the winter here is wonderful,

I guess I’ll hang around;

I could never leave Ontario,

‘Cause I’m frozen to the ground!

Discussion Group - Perception of Reality

Did you ever want to be an amateur philosopher? Now is your chance. Through a series of background readings and seminar-style group discussions, we explore the nature of reality. Curiosity, inquiry, and a spirit of levity will guide the discussions.

First, we concentrate on the physical world, pursuing questions such as: What is space? What is time? What is the material world made of? What is life? Then we progress to more abstract questions such as: What am “I”? How do I know what I know? Next, we focus on: What does the physical world tell us about causality and free will? What does this mean to me? Finally, we strive to fuse the preceding material into an integrated perception of reality.

To complete the background readings, you must have a computer or tablet device and access to the Internet. More details at www.cogni-vision.com.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE from Bill Charters.

I trust that all of our members had a great summer as the weather couldn’t have been better this year. Hopefully the upcoming few months are good to those of us that aren’t snowbirds! I want to wish the snowbirds great warm weather this winter and look forward to your return in the spring.

I would like you to know that Activity Haven is thriving and continuing to grow! We are in a good financial position thanks in particular to two of the biggest fundraisers – bingo and bus trips! I am going to throw in another shout out to Joanne Anderson who spends countless hours orchestrating our many interesting and fun bus tours!

We have been going through the final draft of our new Policies and Procedures document and hope to have it complete by our Annual General Meeting. There has been some participation in the review by members and I encourage you to express your interest to the office if you would like to be involved in the review. It generally involves one meeting per month.

There are a couple of openings on the Board for new members. I am pleased to say that you are well represented by a Board with a diverse skill set! The oversight by the Board is great! If you believe that you have skills that you would like to volunteer to the Board, I would love to hear from you! Please ask for an application form in the office.

The City of Peterborough has facilitated a committee that has recently awarded a contract to perform a complete review of all facilities as well as programs and activities for seniors in Peterborough city and surrounding area. Our executive director, Heather Leveck, is a member of the steering committee for that initiative. The consultant will review the three seniors’ centres within the city as well as the surrounding area with a view to developing efficiencies that would optimize the programs and activities for all of the seniors in the area.

You should have received an annual appeal letter from Activity Haven recently. I encourage you to contribute to Activity Haven if you are able to to allow us to continue to provide quality programs and activities as well as develop new ones for our members.

I will finish up by wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous and healthy New Year!!

Sincerely,

Bill Charters
