From the desk of District GovernorRotary Foundation will be completing a century of service to the Humanity in 2017 andto bring the Foundation more relevant for the 21st Century and to make it stronger, moreprominent and more accessible, the Trustees have evolved the Future Vision Plan and anew Motto for the Foundation - 'Doing Good in the World'. This has been approved bythe Trustees, the RI Board and also endorsed by the Council of Legislation.

The new grant structure of the Future Vision Plan attempts to optimize contributions to our Foundation sothat clubs and districts can maximize the use of funds for greater impact, greater flexibility, and greatersustainability in their work and it has been formulated this strategy based on feedback.

The Future Vision Plan is designed to :

• Simplify Foundation programs and processes consistent with the mission• Focus Rotarian service efforts which will address priority world needs that are relevant to Rotarians• Offer program options to help achieve both global and local goals• Increase the sense of ownership at the district and club levels by transferring more decisions to them• Gain greater understanding of The Rotary Foundation's work and enhance Rotary's public imageThe approved areas of focus, calling upon key points of The Rotary Foundation mission are:

• Peace and conflict prevention and resolution• Disease prevention and treatment• Water and sanitation• Maternal and child health• Basic education and literacy• Economic and community development.

All of the grants of the Rotary Foundation will be delivered through two grants, Rotary Foundation DistrictGrants and Rotary Foundation Global Grants.

Rotary Foundation District Grants: The District Simplified Grants are a model of how "District Grants"will work in the future. Allowing a broad range of choices for clubs and districts. The funding will comefrom the Rotary Foundation, but be administered at the district level providing a funding mechanism for thesmaller projects that clubs and districts wish to undertake either in their local area or internationally.

Rotary Foundation Global Grants focus on sustainable impacts with long-term effects that meet specificstandards of quality and include Rotarian participation. This will fund longer term projects that will havesignificant Rotarian participation. These will be the larger grants with sustainable outcomes and internationalpartnership will be required for club and district to develop Global Grants.

Future Vision Plan will become universal from 2013 - 14 Rotary year onwards.Rtn. Dr. Babu Chacko

Kalyan BanerjeeRI President

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,

In 1885, the London Times ran a series of editorials honoring the 100th birthday of SirMoses Montefiore, the British financier and philanthropist knighted by Queen Victoria. The editorials commented on his honesty, his generosity, and his willingness to come tothe aid of anyone in need. One story was particularly telling.

Someone once asked Sir Moses, one of the wealthiest men of his era, how much he wasworth. In the face of such an ill-mannered inquiry, he merely paused for a moment'sreflection before naming a figure – one that fell far short of his questioner's expectations.Naturally, it was met with an objection; surely he must be worth 10 times as much! SirMoses merely smiled. "Young man," he replied, "you didn't ask me how much I own. Youasked me how much I am worth. So I calculated how much I have given to charity thisyear, and that is the number I gave you. You see, in life we are worth only what we arewilling to share with others."

When we calculate our own worth, do we think about it in terms of what we have, or howwe use it? When we say that all human beings are of equal worth, do our actions followour words?

I believe that being a Rotarian means looking at all of our resources differently. What isthe most good that we could choose to do with what we have? What are the choices thatwill ultimately leave us the richest?

In Rotary, we are all aware of the great needs in so many parts of our world. And we allknow how much we can do to help through our Rotary Foundation. We can change lives,we can restore hope, we can build futures – if we choose to.

In life, everything is a choice. We can choose to close our eyes to the needs of others, tokeep what we have for ourselves, to declare the problems of others to be theirs alone. Orwe can choose to look past distance, past color, past language and dress and culture, and see that people everywhere are just like us – and then refuse to walk away.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I am sure you had a great festive season. Dushera & Diwali give us an opportunity tocelebrate life.

The month of November in Rotary, too, gives us a reason to celebrate life; celebratethe lives of others by sharing with them, caring for them, providing for them, healingthem, serving them. So much of the great work of Rotary gets done because of TheRotary Foundation. At times I wonder if TRF, indeed, is the soul of Rotary.

The Rotary Foundation is unique in more ways than one. It is not a Foundation fundedby one single person but each one of us has contributed to the edifice, brick by brick.I know for sure, some of these bricks bear my name just as some bear yours andother donor’s names. Therefore it is OUR Foundation. When I make a contribution, Ican decide how my money will be used - for Literacy, for Water & Sanitation, forDisaster Management, for Health Issues etc. And, we all know, 50% of the amountdonated comes back to the District only to be reused and at times multiplied throughMatching Grants, ensuring multiple benefits out of a single donation. Friends, therecan hardly be a better place to put your money in. Let us make this year the best everfrom India as far as contributions to The Rotary Foundation are concerned. India hasbecome the number three country in giving. Let us do better than that. It is said, “TheTaj Mahal is a static monument of one man’s love for a woman. The Rotary Foundationis a dynamic monument of man’s love for the entire humanity.” This November morethan ever, let us make our Rotary Foundation even stronger by making handsomecontributions. The deadline for registration at lower rates for the Bangkok Conventionis 1st December, 2011. I urge each one of you and your club members to register now. This is an extremely affordable registration rate. Added to that is the proximity - Bangkokis close by - and the airfare and hotels are so cheap. There cannot be a betteropportunity to attend the Convention. The biggest attraction, of course is that an IndianRI President Kalyan Banerjee and Binotaji will be at this Convention. So, say Yes toBangkok !

Lastly friends, a big, big thank you for the overwhelming response to the KolkataInstitute. The registrations have crossed 700 and do not seem to be stopping. ChairKamal and Sonal, Rashi and I thank you for saying “Yes Kolkata”!

People do not die for usimmediately, but remain bathedin a sort of aura of life whichbears no relation to trueimmortality but through whichthey continue to occupy ourthoughts in the same way aswhen they were alive.

We, Rotarians of district 3211pay homage to our member and past District GovernorRavi Karuna Karan, whose death anniversary falls onNovember 25th.

Revi Karuna Karan, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, sonof late Rtn.K.C.Karuna Karan, joined Rotary Club ofAlleppey in 1952. He joined the Rotary Club of Alleppeyat the age of 20. He became the President of the Club(1956-57) at the young age of 24 - as the youngestRotary Club President in the world until that time. Hewas elected as the Rotary District Governor (District321) in 1976-77. His one time contribution of USD.50,000/ to Rotary Foundation made him the highestdonor of that time.

Rtn.Revi Karuna Karan followed the footsteps of hisfather in business and proved himself, ere long, anoutstanding figure in the coir industry. His success inthis field had been mainly due to his effective publicrelations which he practiced as an art. No wonder, heacquired a world perspective of men and matters - anasset as much to the Rotary as it is to our country.

He had traveled widely and attended the meeting ofmany Rotary clubs in different foreign countries, including the central organization of the RotaryInternational; in Evanston, Illinois, USA.

He was a great philanthropist and Humanitarian. Allthrough his life, he made generous contributions toseveral worthy causes. He always maintained a cordialrelation with all his officers, staff, workers and friends.

Rtn Revi Karan passed away on 25th November 2003after a brief illness.

His wife, Betty Karan followed the footsteps of herbeloved husband by contributed USD. 100,000/ to RotaryFoundation. This kind gesture was acknowledged byour Governor, Dr. Babu Chacko during the districtseminar on TRF held at Kollam.

Homage to the LeaderParasurama, O Parasurama,Why did You Make this coconut-spangled land, so petite,That it couldn't contain its child Karan's works so great,Or was it part of your Machiavellian design to strike toglory your tiny land? With scholastic credentials from Alleppey to Surrey, Lausanne to Massachusetts,He spun the montage of coir to lands Across the seven seas, the Karan Group. An indefatigable Betty as a better half,Was Karan's joie de vivre And through her reached the acme of his magnanimity,In making a better Rotary world.Whither these lines are written or carvedTo a pedestal of marble or gold, or dust,His Works, nevertheless, shall remainFor children of tomorrow to exclaim"Such a man treaded these very lands".
