Criticism Versus Improvement
Once upon a time there was a painter who had recently completed his course. He painted a beautiful scenery and put his creation at a busy street crossing in order to seek people’s opinion about his caliber and painting skills.
Just beside the painting a board was kept which read as below.
“I have painted this piece. Since I am new to this profession, I might have committed some mistakes. Please put a cross wherever you see a mistake.”
While he came back in the evening to collect his painting, he was completely shattered to see that the whole canvas was filled with crosses and some people had even written comments on the painting.
Disheartened and broken completely, he ran to his master’s place and told him the entire story and burst into tears.
Master smiled and suggested, “My child, I shall prove that you are a great artist.” Do as I say without questioning. Please get me replica of your creation.
Young artist reluctantly agreed and two days later created the replica of the earlier painting and offered it to the master.
The master took his disciple to the same street square and displayed the replica exactly at the same place and wrote a note on another board, “I have recently painted this piece. Since I am new to this profession, I might have committed some mistakes. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. Please do a favour. If you find a mistake, kindly pick up the brush and correct it.”
Master and the disciple walked back home.
They both visited the place same evening. Young painter was surprised to see that actually there was not a single correction done so far. The painting was kept for one month. No correction came in.
It is easy to criticize but difficult to bring improvement.

TECHNO-TALK
When a motor is energized directly from the mains supply, it draws very heavy current till its speed gets stabilized. Heavy amount of inrush current can cause severe damage to the motor and also it can create disturbance in supply as well as the other appliances connected with the supply.
Following methods are used to energize electric motor.
• DOL Starting,
• Star Delta Starting,
• Soft Starting &
• Variable Frequency Drive Starting.
Out of these, DOL starting has its own disadvantages in that there is no provision of limiting inrush current.
Star Delta starting can ensure inrush current limiting by 30% only and is suitable in applications where the motor is starting without load.
A soft starter regulates the voltage flowing to the motor at start up. By slowly ramping up the supply voltage to the motor, a smooth start without excessive current flow can be achieved.
Variable Frequency Drives ensure complete control of the motor that includes smooth Starting / Stopping and speed control.
While VFD is the most versatile option, they are the costliest too.
Soft Starter is the most suitable option as compared with DOL & Star Delta Starting in applications where inrush currents are to be limited and smooth starting of the motor is to be ensured.
Main advantages of using a soft starter are,
Reduced Energy Intake:
When Soft Starter is used, the motor starts gradually as voltage applied to the motor gradually ramps up. Thus over all energy consumed during start up is considerably reduced as compared to DOL and Star Delta starters.
Reduction in the level of power surges:
Soft Starter ensures reduced amount of power thrust upon the motor. As the voltage across the motor builds up gradually, level of power surges also remain at considerably low level.
Reduced chances of over heating:
In case of conventional method of energizing the motor through mains supply, motor gets over heated due to large amount of inrush current being drawn from the supply.
Use of Soft Starter help in controlling heating of the motor as initial surge of supply to the motor is controlled and voltage across the motor builds up gently.
Improved efficiency:
As soft starter prevents over heating of the motor, losses associated with over heating automatically get reduced. Also the chances of damage to motor are greatly reduced due to controlled start up, motor is enabled to operate more efficiently as compared with start up through direct supply.
Improved life span:
As the chances of over heating and probable damages through power surges are greatly reduced, the motor life span increases considerably.
Increased number of starts per hour:
Considerable amount of energy of motor is consumed when it is started directly through mains. This coupled with increased over heating and excessive thrust of power puts severe limitation on repeated turning on/off of the motor. Soft Starter helps in controlling over heat & energy consumption of the motor, there by facilitating more number of starts per hour.
Provision Of Setting acceleration time:
Use of Soft Starter allows setting of power up time of the motor. If you know your motor or machine is prone to power surges or is old and worn out, you might set it to take a while to power up. If, on the other hand, you know your machine is sturdy and reliable, you might be all right with letting it take a shorter time to power up. Either way, this flexibility and customizability is an enormous advantage.
