There is nothing as constant in life as change, and college students expe-

rience numerous transitions during the college years. Becoming familiar

with a new academic environment, adjusting to different living arrange-

ments, and developing new relationships are just a few changes. You

have greater personal freedom during college to make your own choices,

but it also means you are solely responsible for managing your daily

schedule. In order to succeed in college, students must learn how to bal-

ance going to class, studying, socializing, participating in clubs and activ-

ities, working, and taking care of themselves.

It is normal to feel overwhelmed at times by the changes you are experiencing. I encourage you to

utilize your resources to help you manage during times of change. There are many offices on campus

that can help you succeed both academically and personally. Because you are in TRIO Student Sup-

port Services, you have extra resources available to you. Our three faculty members, Steve Berard,

Crystal Cleven, and Sarah Young, and myself are available to meet with you to talk about any per-

sonal, academic, or financial struggles you are experiencing. TRIO can also place you with a tutor to

help you improve how you are doing in your classes.

TRIO has two classes you can take this spring semester to help you succeed in college and prepare

for your future. Take Critical Reading and Analysis (UNIV 1199, 2 credits) to develop more effec-

tive study, test-taking, and time management skills. Take Life Career Planning (UNIV 1200, 2

credits) if you don’t have a major, if you are considering changing your major, or if you want to be

certain about the career you plan to pursue. These classes are not just for freshmen. Any student can

benefit from them. See page two for more information about these classes.

Change is inevitable, and TRIO is here to help you embrace and manage the changes in your college

life. To get help, just stop by Sattgast 207 and ask to meet with one of our faculty advisors, with me,

or with our tutoring coordinator. Although the TRIO office has moved to Sattgast 207, one thing has

stayed the same - you are in TRIO SSS and can use our services until you graduate.

Two Helpful TRIO Courses for Spring Semester

T HE B R OWS ER

TRIO offers two courses spring semester that can help you be academically successful in college and help prepare you for the

world of work. Be sure to talk to your advisor when picking classes for spring semester about the following two classes. You

need permission to register for TRIO classes. Stop in the TRIO office in Sattgast 207 if your advisor is not Crystal Cleven, Sa-

rah Young, or Steve Berard and the TRIO staff will give you permission to register for either of these TRIO classes .

Life Career Planning UNIV 1200 (2 Credits)

If you’re still deciding on a major, if you just want to

confirm it, or if you are thinking of changing your ma-

jor— consider taking Life Career Planning spring semes-

ter! We do a number of activities and assessments that

help define values and interests which direct us to a ma-

jor and then a career. We ask what might be important

to you: money, status, living by family, setting your own

working conditions. We learn about not having to live

paycheck to paycheck by learning about financial mat-

ters such as loans, credit cards, savings/retirement op-

tions, and budgets. We end the class by researching your

major/career, starting a resume and learning about inter-

view skills.

Critical Reading and Analysis UNIV 1199 (2 Credits)

Critical Reading and Analysis covers a variety of topics and skill areas that relate to

boosting academic success. Students should consider taking Critical Reading and Analy-

sis if they are looking to:

improve their ability to read and understand college textbooks

better remember textbook material they’ve read

improve time management

study smarter, not longer

learn test preparation and test-taking strategies

reduce test anxiety

This class is not just for freshmen. Any student who wants to improve their study, time-

management, and test-taking skills can benefit from enrolling in Critical Reading and

Analysis.

Crystal Cleven Sarah Young

Life Career Planning Instructors

Steve Berard teaches

Critical Reading and Analysis

cause the amount of material to review

(or re-learn) is longer, your ability to

retain information is lower, and your

test anxiety is higher.

It is much more effective to study in

smaller amounts and to reinforce learn-

ing over time.

Step 1: Take good notes in class.

Step 2: Review those notes within 24

hours (preferably at the end of the day)

Step 3: Don’t simply reread notes -

summarize important concepts out loud

in your own words as if you’re sharing

key points with a friend who missed

class that day.

Step 4: Review notes for a second

time at the end of the week (a perfect

hour-long task on Friday afternoons

before the weekend officially begins)

Don’t let the tail wag the dog. By tak-

ing a layered approach to studying, you

will reinforce your understanding of

course material, improve your ability to

recall it, and take control of your test

anxiety.

A major cause of test anxiety is a lack of

adequate preparation. If you suffer

from test anxiety, that is actually good

news. It means you have the ability to

gain the upper hand on anxiety by

simply planning ahead.

“Planning ahead,” however, does not

mean the night before an exam. All-

nighters are usually the end result of

major procrastination. They are not an

effective way to study for exams be-

Students Share TRIO Class Benefits

Megan Berens started at BSU as an undecided major leaning toward elementary education but also con-

sidering nursing or pediatrics or sports medicine. Megan said “Taking personality tests and the values

exercises in Life Career Planning helped me figure out what is important to me and what I want in the

future. All the assessments pointed me toward the elementary education major and career choice.” Me-

gan also found working on her resume and learning about future financial issues and paying back student

loans very helpful. According to Megan, “this course helps you get in touch with your goals and

strengths and how it all fits with your future. Everything in this class is useful.”

Brianna Neumann believes she still would not have a major if she had not taken

Life Career Planning. She says “this class made me think long term what I want to do with my life. Inter-

viewing people in the teaching and business fields I was considering helped me realize these fields are not

for me. The assessments were very eye-opening helping me find out things about myself.” Because of the

interviews and assessments she did in class, Brianna has decided to major in social work and hopes to

work with children through the school system.

Sierra DeGeest transferred to BSU and took Critical Reading and Analysis (CR&A) spring semester of her

junior year. Sierra said as a result of taking CR&A she is a “better student because she knows what to study

and how to study more effectively.” She is using SQ3R reading techniques with class textbooks and Cornell

note-taking and to take notes in class and from professor’s online powerpoint presentations. According to

Sierra, “my reading has gotten progressively better, I am better at looking for and finding main ideas, and I

retain more information. My scores on exams have improved since I started using these techniques in other

courses. Testing was always nerve wracking, but now because I have learned the material better when stud-

ying I definitely feel confident as a student.”

Carmen Backowski took Critical Reading and Analysis when she was a freshman

in the fall of 2011. She is now a senior majoring in community health and minoring in psychology and

health promotion education. Carmen said “the most beneficial strategy I leaned in this class is how to

pick out the main points to know what to highlight in my textbooks. I have also found it really helpful to

pre-read the textbook chapter before going to class and to review my class notes soon after the class. This

class was very helpful. I still use what I learned in Critical Reading and Analysis.”

Student Achievement Day, tutored for TRIO SSS, and

served on the Presidents Student Commission.

Most Successful Freshman, Abigail Deitchler, took all three

TRIO SSS courses while taking challenging courses in order

associate in multiple sections of College Orientation cours-

es. As a peer advisor for Career Services she gave presenta-

tions in all TRIO College Orientation courses discussing the

importance of getting connected with Career Services and

Strengths.

Student of the Year, Kaitlyn Schleske exemplified all the

attributes of a successful TRIO student. She took TRIO clas-

ses and was academically successful graduating Cum Laude

with a BS in Business Administration and a minor in Mathematics. She lived on campus her entire time at BSU while being a

member of the pep band and symphonic winds. She worked in the TRIO SSS office and tutored many TRIO SSS students. She

enthusiastically and knowledgeably represented the TRIO SSS program at TRIO day, Academic Advising and Registration ses-

sions, and the AIRC day of welcome.
