Study finds nearly 50% of parents underrate harm of school absences A new study by the Ad Council found that 49% of American parents believe their children can miss three or more days of school per month without affecting their academic performance. However, research shows that missing just two days of school per month makes children more likely to fall behind and less likely to graduate. To combat chronic absenteeism, the U.S. Department of Education, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and Ad Council have partnered to create a public service campaign, Absences Add Up. The campaign provides parents resources to help ensure their children attend school each day. For more information, visit AbsencesAddUp.org Did you know?

The McCormickFest 5K Run / 2K Walk and festival is the PTO's main fundraising event of the school year. Please plan to attend the event on Sept. 24 at 4:00 PM at Miami Meadows Park! Hosting the annual event was chosen over having a traditional catalogue sales-type fundraiser because it is more fun, a more memorable experience, and more of the money raised goes directly to the PTO at our school versus vendors! Here is how you can show your support:

1. Please continue to help your child with fundraising! All registrations, donations, and orders are due no later than Thursday, Sept. 22. Local businesses have graciously donated an array of prizes for students, teachers, classrooms, and grade levels for reaching various fundraising goals!

2. We are in need of many volunteers the days surrounding the festival, not just during the event. Please sign-up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040b48aaaa29a20-mccormickfest for volunteer positions and be entered to win a 3 month unlimited spinning membership from Power Ryde on Wards Corner Road worth $345!

3. Please help spread the word about the festival which is free and open to the public. Registration for the 5K Run and 2K Walk will be available to anyone not pre-registered beginning at 3 PM on-site for $20. Print and share the attached flyer at places you visit. Don't forget to "Like!" our Facebook page www.facebook/com/groups/McCormickFest.

4. We are also still looking for donations for the very popular cake walk game: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040b48aaaa29a20-mccormickfest1

5. When you come to the festival, keep in mind that ticket and wristband sales go to the McCormick PTO, and 15% of food truck vendors' sales also will go to the PTO.

Thank you for sharing your time with us. See you there!

We would like to thank all of you who have already joined the PTO this year! Over 170 families and 40 staff members have paid their $10 PTO membership dues. At our September 20th meeting, a drawing will be held for a FREE McCormickFest Wristband! Besides being eligible for our PTO member drawings at our monthly PTO general meetings, you will receive a McCormick all school directory, which will come out later this fall. We are still accepting membership forms, so send yours in today! Extra copies may be found on the PTO web site under the forms/flyers tab or in the spindle in the front lobby at school.

McCormick Backpack ProgramSonRise Church will again, this year, provide weekend food backpacks to our McCormick families in need. SonRise provides all the food and assembles it into individual bags. McCormick is responsible for providing the bins for transportation, taking the bins to pick up spot, and bringing the filled bins back to McCormick. Currently, there are 3 - 25 gallon plastic bins; this will likely require a full back seat and trunk of a car or a van/SUV. This will happen every Thursday during the school year. We are in need of volunteers, (parents, guardians and teachers) to help with this wonderful outreach program. Use the following link if you are interested in helping out: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4eadab2aa3f58-backpack Or contact Alicia Neal at [email protected]

Please RSVP if you are coming to: Heidi Simones, [email protected]
