From the EO Well, tax time and the end of the financial year has just passed and we find ourselves entering into the second half of 2018 already. Winter has us firmly in its grip too, but despite the chilly weather and shorter days, there have been plenty of bright moments over the last few months within the Pegasus community. The first of these was #TAE18AUS Twitter Art Exhibit held in April at the Strathnairn Arts Gallery. Artists worldwide donated postcard-sized, handmade original artwork to the #TAE18AUS – which were showcased for purchase – with 100 per cent of the proceeds donated to Pegasus. To date, over $18,300 has been raised and 389 postcards sold – with the remaining postcards still available for purchase from our website: www.pegasusact.com.au. Calling for support peoplefor the Pegasus bus

As many of you may know, earlierin the year we received a Varietygrant to acquire our very own 12-seater bus with wheelchairaccess. The Pegasus bus willprovide a much-needed door-to-door service for our school groupparticipants – transporting themto Pegasus from their school andback again, two mornings aweek.

In order to provide this service,we need the support of ourfabulous volunteers to help usmake two school runs (forCranleigh and Malkara schools)on two mornings a week. Eachschool run requires a driver andtwo transport support people, and appropriate training for thesepositions will be provided.

Vinyl Night put the needle on the record

The Belconnen Bowling Club’s ‘Vinyl Night’ in April was a great nightout for those discerning music aficionados’ who prefer the way musicsounds on vinyl records and turntables.

Attendees enjoyed the array of music on offer along with food anddrinks, and the proceeds from the evening were donated to Pegasusto support a full-year Riding Scholarship in 2019. Many thanksBelconnen Bowling Club for your wonderful support.

Great minds think alike (or do they?)

Canberra Rotaract's annual Trivia Night in June saw 140 people puttheir knowledge on show in a fun-filled evening of brain-busting, triviatesting competition. The Trivia Night raised an incredible $4000 tosupport 2018 and 2019 scholarships. Brilliant work everyone andthank you!

A lucky country...Gue's story

Our tax time appeal went outin June and features the storyof Gue (pictured on hisPegasus horse, 'Bluey'.) Geuis a young four year-old boy, bright and intelligent, andalways sporting a big smile.

Geu has cerebral palsy.Starved of oxygen at birth, Geu was put on a machine that drained thefluid from his brain. Despite this intervention, the damage was alreadydone – debilitating Geu for life. But you have to be grateful for smallmercies! In Sudan, there wasn’t any such machinery.

Thankfully, Geu’s mother, Daruka, didn’t have to endure the hardshipand grief that would have confronted her in Sudan.

Immigrating to Australia as a refugee when she was fifteen, Darukafeels blessed to be here. In her previous life, she’d have never evenimagined that such supports existed. Now as a single mother of three,Pegasus is one of those supports that her little boy Geu benefits from.

Read more about Gue's wonderful journey on ourwebsite: www.pegasusact.com.au/geus-story

This tax time, please consider a gift to support and expand ourprograms. To make a tax-deductable donation, simply contact us on02 6254 9190 and we will send you a tax deductible receipt.

* Please note: at the time of the Tax Appeal photo shoot, Gue had anRDA Exemption for helmet use due to medical reasons.

Update: It gives Pegasus great pleasure to report that since the filmingof the appeal video and accompanying photo shoot, Gue has madewonderful progress and can now successfully wear a helmet in hisprogram sessions. This has been a tremendous accomplishment forhim and demonstrates the true benefit of our therapeutic horse-facilitated programs.

Farewell Max

Vale, dear Max

It is with the heaviest of heartsthat we farewelled our belovedand distinguished oldgentleman, Max, a few weeksago. At 32 years of age, Maxwas one of the longest servingPegasus horses – joining us18yrs ago, and assisting our class participants ever since. He waspurchased around 1999/2000 from a man who worked with him as adriving pony in Paringa, South Australia. According to the letter hisprevious owner sent, Max always formed strong attachments tomembers of the herd, and we certainly saw that here at Pegasus. Maxwas a successful driving pony for many years and was a valuableridden and unmounted pony. Max was much loved by staff, volunteersand riders whose lives he enriched; and was valued by his friends inthe Pegasus herd (especially his best buddy Bill).

Max had been semi-retired for the last few years and as he aged, hishealth was being closely monitored by vets and Pegasus horse staff.Unfortunately, Max’s health rapidly declined this month and theemotional decision was made to euthanise him on welfare grounds.

For staff, having to bid farewell to an animal they have cared for daily, fussed over, respected and loved, is never an easy task. Forvolunteers and riders who knew Max and loved him as well, this willalso be sad news and our thoughts are with you all.

Small in stature but big in heart, Max was one of our friendliest andmost endearing horses – very gentle and full of patience, grace andkindness. He brightened our lives, always made us smile, and will beforever remembered as a generous and good natured friend.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Debb Butt, the previous horse managerwho acquired Max for Pegasus all those years ago; LeslieChristianson for also helping to secure Max for Pegasus; to David andMargaret Whittem for adopting him; and of course to the generousstaff and volunteers who worked in classes and in the stables, andwho loved and cared for him.

From us all, farewell dear friend. Rest easy. You will certainly bemissed.

Max in his younger years.
