From the Executive General Manager Slowly, slowly Pegasus is starting to regain some normality, looking and feeling more like the Pegasus we know and love. No one can say 2020 has been dull; but after all that has happened and the challenges we still face every day, our amazing Pegasus community has proven, once again, its strength and resilience. After shutting down for eight weeks and not expecting much to change for a good six months, Canberra suddenly found itself in the position to consider easing restrictions. Thanks to the continued support and dedication of our team, we were able to re-introduce the first classes within two weeks of the announcement, a testament to the professionalism of our team all round. Term two has been bitter sweet for Pegasus and our families. With a very cautious approach, we started to re-introduce some of our programs but, sadly, we were not able to invite everyone back straight away. We must play it safe and ensure everyone’s health comes first. The first programs returned on May 19 and 21 with a second round returning the following week. Staggering the return of classes has allowed Pegasus to monitor and adjust our Covid-19 procedures while closely monitoring further advice. It was also decided to not run a school holiday program this term but to offer an extra week of classes to current participants, helping in a small way to make up some of what they have missed out on. Term three will see more of our participants return, with over 50% of our pre Covid-19 shutdown participants now back into classes. Our final stage for returning participants will be our high support riders and we are watching this very closely as restrictions ease. Our difficulty here is the constant physical contact and the inability to maintain the 1.5 metre rule making it impossible to meet physical distancing requirements; this is made more difficult by the lack of guidelines in return to sport for people living with a disability. However, we are confident of having these classes back in the not too distant future. Of course, these plans rely heavily on the ACT and surrounds keeping infection levels to a minimum. Sadly, we have seen how quickly things can change in Victoria and how fragile current restrictions are. I would like to take this moment to say thank you to our staff, volunteers and families for their understanding and patience duringthese difficult times.

In other news the board and I have been working closely in regard toCovid-19 and what it means to Pegasus in the longer term. It is nosecret that charities all across Australia and around the world havebeen hit hard and it is important we continue to look at securingfunding into the future. This has included meetings with local ministersand shadow ministers from both the Labor and Liberal parties andensuring the Government and Members of the Legislative assemblyare aware of the invaluable work Pegasus plays in the community aswe seek their support.

The last three months has also shown the generosity of the Canberracommunity, these stories can be seen below; from virtual bouquets toface mask donations and even helping to support Mighty Max, thegenerosity of our community shines through and we say thank you.

In closing, remember to please stay safe, stay in touch and look out forone another.

Sincerely,

Matt Watson

Executive General Manager

Event Cancellations

Open Day and Obstacle-a-thon – As you are aware, wehad to pull the pin on ourpopular Pegasus Open Day inApril, with relatively shortnotice. We were hoping topostpone the event until later

in the year, but unfortunately this was looking more and more unlikelyas time passed. As such, we have made the hard decision to officiallycancel the 2020 Pegasus Open Day and concentrate our time andefforts on other initiatives for this year.

Thank you again to our kind 2020 Obstacle-a-thon sponsors who havecontinued to support us despite the event being cancelled.

Horses’ Birthday – 1 August marks the official birthday of all horsesin the southern hemisphere; a day when Pegasus usually invites ourwonderful supporters to Pegasus to watch a class, eat cake and singhip-hip-hoo-neigh to our magical Pegasus ponies; a day to celebratethe ponies and recognise all they do for our Pegasus community.Unfortunately, for the safety of everyone, we have decided to modifythis year’s celebrations and run them spectator free. Instead we willhold small celebrations in classes with our participants, volunteers andcoaches.

We appreciate that this is a popular event amongst our supporters anda great opportunity to come out to Pegasus and witness the magic. Weapologise for any disappointment and thank you for yourunderstanding.
