FROM THE PASTOR Vibrant Faith For the past year American Lutheran Church has been involved in a spiritual journey we call IGNITE. This Vibrant Faith ministry presents a new vision for us as a church of how faith is not only lived out daily in our lives but how faith is transmitted and shared with one generation to another. It is based on the main principle that faith is caught more than it is taught and it is important to view discipleship as something that happens be- yond the hour we spend sitting in the pews. Vibrant Faith emphasizes the need to weave spirituality back in our lives. It is not a new program, but a redis- covery of whole lifediscipleship. The Vibrant Faith vision suggests changes in the way we do churchchanges that return to some basic principles which have been proven as effective ways to share and nurture faith. You see, the Christian faith is not only to be conceived and grasped in the mind: it is to be experienced and lived daily through certain practices that not only give expression to what we believe, but encourages our growing in the faith. In others words, faith is more than an intellectual pursuit. It is experienced through such daily practices as caring conversations, devotions, rituals/traditions and service. In terms of sharing the faith with our children, it has been proven that nurturing faith includes creating an op- portunity for a son or daughter to talk with mom or dad about their faith. Grandparents play an important role as well simply by engaging in conversation with their grandchildren about the importance of faith in their lives. Nurturing of faith also includes regular family devotions (like saying grace at a meal or reading a Bible story together at night before bed). I think, for example, how many families resonate with the ritual of coming for- ward to light candles and say prayers during the Holden Evening Prayer service we used on Wednesday eve- nings for Lent. How might such a ritual get translated to the home? Maybe a family can designate one or two occasions during the week where family devotions incorporate the lighting of candles, scripture readings and prayer. Another key aspect of nurturing faith is when parents and children together are involved in efforts to help oth- er people. (Like assisting Pastor Jon at Stone Hearth and Hilltop Estates with the worship service or volunteer- ing some time at a nursing home playing cards.) This is faith lived out in acts of caring and compassion. Serv- ing others—sharing Gods love through concrete acts has a huge impact on Christian faith formation. All of this is another way of saying: Faith doesnt simply happen in the Sunday School classroom or the sanc- tuary. We think we have done our duty as parents and grandparents by sending our kids off to Sunday School or sitting together in the pew for one hour for Sunday worship. But the biggest impact we will have on our childrens lives in terms of faith formation is practicing what we call the Four Keys of Faith at home. These include Caring Conversation, Devotions, Service and Rituals/Traditions. The Taking Faith Homeinsert we distribute at worship on Sundays has some helpful ideas on how the Four Keys can be used during the week. I hope you will use this resource for individual and family devotions. The next IGNITE cross-generational event will be a Pentecost Celebration following Sunday worship on May 22. This is for the whole congregation as part of our Vibrant Faith emphasis at American Lutheran Church. I hope you will participate in this opportunity to help form a vibrant faith in Jesus Christ. In His Service, Pastor Jon

FROM THE PASTOR Vibrant Faith

For the past year American Lutheran Church has been involved in a spiritual journey we call IGNITE. This Vibrant Faith ministry presents a new vision for us as a church of how faith is not only lived out daily in our lives but how faith is transmitted and shared with one generation to another. It is based on the main principle that faith is caught more than it is taught and it is important to view discipleship as something that happens be-yond the hour we spend sitting in the pews.

Vibrant Faith emphasizes the need to weave spirituality back in our lives. It is not a new program, but a redis-covery of “whole life” discipleship. The Vibrant Faith vision suggests changes in the way we “do church”—changes that return to some basic principles which have been proven as effective ways to share and nurture faith.

In terms of sharing the faith with our children, it has been proven that nurturing faith includes creating an op-portunity for a son or daughter to talk with mom or dad about their faith. Grandparents play an important role as well simply by engaging in conversation with their grandchildren about the importance of faith in their lives.

Nurturing of faith also includes regular family devotions (like saying grace at a meal or reading a Bible story together at night before bed). I think, for example, how many families resonate with the ritual of coming for-ward to light candles and say prayers during the Holden Evening Prayer service we used on Wednesday eve-nings for Lent. How might such a ritual get translated to the home? Maybe a family can designate one or two occasions during the week where family devotions incorporate the lighting of candles, scripture readings and prayer.

Another key aspect of nurturing faith is when parents and children together are involved in efforts to help oth-er people. (Like assisting Pastor Jon at Stone Hearth and Hilltop Estates with the worship service or volunteer-ing some time at a nursing home playing cards.) This is faith lived out in acts of caring and compassion. Serv-ing others—sharing God’s love through concrete acts has a huge impact on Christian faith formation.

All of this is another way of saying: Faith doesn’t simply happen in the Sunday School classroom or the sanc-tuary. We think we have done our duty as parents and grandparents by sending our kids off to Sunday School or sitting together in the pew for one hour for Sunday worship. But the biggest impact we will have on our children’s lives in terms of faith formation is practicing what we call the Four Keys of Faith at home. A Celebration of Pentecost Sunday, May 22

Following Worship

Pentecost is a feast that celebrates the powerful pres-ence of the Holy Spirit who came upon the followers of Jesus shortly after his death, resurrection and ascen-sion into heaven. This same Holy Spirit seeks to break into our lives in a similar-ly powerful way.

Many symbols are associated with Pen-tecost—fire, wind, dove.

This celebration is designed for all ages to learn more about the work of the Holy Spirit through engaging cross-generational sharing, devo-tions and activities, including building kites to deco-rate the sanctuary and for families to take and use at home.

Summer Stewardship It doesn’t take a church consultant to tell you that most churches experience a decrease in regular giving during the summer months. It is not that people do not care about their church; people simply choose not to attend church as often for various reasons. Well-meaning church members turn their attention toward time at the lake, camping, an excursion to the big cit-ies of Lincoln or Omaha, an extended vacation in the hills, and anything else that might pop up during the summer months.

Vacations are good. Times for renewal are important to have. However, a decrease in church attendance during the summer months often means a correspond-ing decrease in giving. Simply put, ministry happens whether every member is present or not. The work and ministry of the church needs support all year long.

Here are some ways you can continue to support the work of our church during the summer months: Drop off your offering at the office during the week. Mail your offerings during the week you are gone. Use

Simply Giving—the electronic transfer of offerings to the church account. Whatever way you choose to give, please know that your strong support of the congrega-tion is greatly appreciated!

Senior Moments The Senior Moments group will meet Thursday, May 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Deb’s Diner. Please r.s.v.p. to the office at 537-3433 by noon on Wednesday, May 11 so reservations may be made.

Wednesday Evening Services Wednesday evening services will continue through June 15. Meals will be served through May.

Plans for meals in June are pending except for June 15. That evening will be a combination worship and meal with the children attending Day Camp. The ser-vice will be led by the counselors from Carol Joy Hol-ling and the children will sing.

We will be cooking hot dogs over the bonfire and have ice cream for dessert.

Come join us for some outdoor fun and enjoy a pro-gram presented by the Day Camp kids!

Reception for

Lonna Grabenstein and Jim Gonzales Parish Ministry Associates

Confirmation Camp at Sullivan Hills Sunday, June 19—Friday, June 24

Pastor Jon is organizing an opportunity for current Affirmation students to attend Confirmation Camp at Sullivan Hills Camp June 19-24. Sullivan Hills, a Bible camp associated with Nebraska Lutheran Outdoors Ministries is located near Lodgepole. Because of a generous financial gift to the camp, the total registration cost is $50.00 per camper for the entire week! Affirmation students who plan to attend must complete a reg-istration form and make a $25.00 deposit by Sunday, May 15. Registration forms are available from Pastor Jon. Confirmation Camp includes two hours each morning with Pastor Jon to review key themes from Lutheran theology and the New Testament. Students spend the rest of their time (including overnight supervision) being led through life-changing programming experiences by a well-trained college-age summer staff of Christian role models. A week at camp offers students the chance to experience a high ropes challenge course, kayaking, co-op activities that promote teamwork, creative arts, fishing and directly experiencing the beauty of God’s crea-tion and intentionally learning more about nature. Both students and leaders take great joy in making new friendships. At the heart of a Confirmation camp week at Sullivan Hills is fantastic fellowship with peers from other Lutheran churches.

Funeral Home Tour The Affirmation Students and their parents will be gathering at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:15 p.m for a tour of the funeral home. This provides an opportunity to take away some of the mystery surrounding the care of our loved ones after their death. Tim Strauser will be conduct-ing the tour and answering questions about funeral arrangements. This tour will be used in conjunction with their New Testament study on salvation and eternal life.

The First Presbyterian, United Methodist, Zion Lutheran and American Lutheran churches have formed a combined group of youth. For lack of a better name right now, we are calling the group COMBO. This group will meet periodically to have fellowship and do larger service projects in the Gothenburg area. Our first project was a Scavenger Hunt for grocery donations to the Gothenburg Food Pantry. To make the hunt more interesting there were points given for certain items like peas, asparagus, cereal, peanut butter and mac & cheese. Two grocery carts were overflowing thanks to the community’s generous donations! A School’s Out Party will be Wednesday, May 25 at Jim and Connie Dalrymple’s country home. The food fare will be hotdogs and s’mores. Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes for the games and activities. There is still room available for the trip to Pine Ridge from July 31 through August 4. A sign up sheet is on Lonna’s door. The cost of the trip is $300.00. Each youth participating will need to pay $150.00 of that amount. A $100.00 non-refundable deposit will guarantee your spot and is due by June 1. Our High School Graduates will be honored at during worship on Sunday, May 1. I cannot begin to tell you how much they all mean to me. We have taken some incredible mission trips serving people in Omaha, Dal-las/ Ft. Worth, New Orleans, Detroit and one of our favorite places Pine Ridge, South Dakota. We have shared a lot of laughter. Our discussions about Jesus and the world we live in have inspired me. It has been a true privilege to be a part of their lives. Those memories are going to stick with me and someday they can come visit me in the care home and we will have lots to reminisce about. J.A.M. We have been mixing things up a little bit in JAM by mixing the ages together. This has given them an op-portunity to get better acquainted. The older students help the younger ones with activities and games. By having the same teacher for several weeks, relation-ships are growing between teachers and students. Our focus has been the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13. At the close of our worship time, we have been singing a modern version of the Lord’s Prayer. The youth know the words really well, but our study has helped them understand how the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples still applies to their lives.

It has been a busy year and now it is time to say thanks to all who make JAM the best evangelism tool American Lutheran has. So grateful to the kitchen crew: Karan Smith, Nancy Aden, Annie Aden and Lisa Wagner. The teachers: Stacy Anderson, Hannah Boyd, Jackie France, Helene Keiser, Dana Kries, Tra-cy Lichtenwalter, Jennie Rodriquez, Kelly Schmeeck-le, and Bev and Chuck Titkemeier. Music: Ernie Blecha

Crowd Control: Eldon Rodine, Dave and Wenda Keiser. We have loved all the dozens and dozens of cookies baked by congregation members.

High School Senior Recognition Sunday

Senior Recognition Sunday will be Sunday, May 1. Parents of our high school sen-iors will present the youth with the quilt they chose from the church’s quilting group. A spe-cial breakfast for the entire con-gregation will be served after

the 9:00 worship service to honor the seniors.

ALC is proud of our seniors. Congratula-tions!

Nebraska Synod Assembly The 2016 Nebraska Synod Assembly will be held June 2-4, 2016, at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney, Nebraska.

The 2016 theme is “Called in Hope, Diverse in Mis-sion, United in Christ” and will provide participants with ways to experience what it means to be called from all of our various backgrounds and walks of life

to be the church together, centered around the cross of Jesus Christ.

Those attending as voting members this year are Pas-tor Jon, Larry and Marye Franzen, Scott France and Joyce Kolbo. Lonna Grabenstein will also attend and will be recognized for her 20 years of service as a Parish Ministry Associate.

Day Camp—Upside Down Day Camp will be Monday, June 13 through Thurs-day, June 16. The camp staff from Carol Joy Holling will be coming to lead Day Camp for kin-dergarten through 6th grade students. The cost is $20.00.

Three year old children through those en-tering kindergarten will be in the Little Lutherans class. The cost is $10.00. Registration in-formation will be located in the narthex, and also on the website.

We need volunteers to help prepare and serve meals, assist camp staff, provide housing for camp staff, do-nate food, and bake cookies.

On Sunday, May 8, the Parish Education committee will be selling UsBorn greeting cards and organizer to raise funds for day camp expenses.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Second Annual Spring Dinner a success. Thank you to all of the women who helped organize, cook and serve the delicious meal. Also thank you to the Affirmation students that helped serve and clean up.

Funds for the dinner will be designated to go towards a project or mission each year. This year the funds will be used to purchase new chairs for the parish hall. A few of the chairs were displayed around a ta-ble for the dinner.

Some ALC members attended the Saturday night worship service on April 23 at Callaway

Lutheran. They all walked into the church together to surprise Fred. Our men’s choir sang

“Every Time I Fell the Spirit” and “Soon and Very Soon’ for their congregation. Then they all

traveled to Broken Bow to eat dinner at the historic Arrow Hotel.

Geraniums It is time to do some planting and land-scaping. Rather than ordering just gera-niums this year, there will be other landscaping done along with them. Car-olyn Hicken has agreed to be the “church gardener” and will be purchas-

ing some perennials along with the geraniums. If you would like to purchase a geranium in honor or in memory of a loved one, they will be $5.00 each. There is a sign-up sheet on the board in the narthex. Otherwise, any donations towards the landscaping will be appreciated.

Special Offering for May is Hall-Dawson County CASA

Court Appointed Special Advocate The Hall-Dawson County CASA Program is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to ensure that abused and neglected children have the right to a safe placement and permanent home. CASA pro-vides trained, screened and supervised volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglect-ed children requiring court intervention.

Over half a million children are living in foster care. Not because they have done anything wrong, but because they have been abused and/or neglected. A lot of these children get lost in the complexities of

the court system and they need your help. Volunteer as a CASA and change one life at a time!
