The shepherd is everything to his flock; their life, their sustenance, and their care is entirely in his hands, and if the shepherd is good, they will have nothing to fear under his protection, and they will want for nothing. Jesus is preeminently the Good Shepherd: He not only loves, feeds, and guards His sheep, but He also gives them life at the cost of His own. In the mystery of the Incarnation, the Son of God comes to earth in search of men who, like stray sheep, have wandered away from the sheepfold and have become lost in the dark valley of sin. He comes as a most loving Shepherd who, in order to take better care of His flock, is not afraid to share their lot. [1 Peter 2:21-25] shows Him to us as He takes our sins upon Himself that He may heal us by His Passion: ‘Who His own self bore our sins in His Body upon the tree that we, being dead to sin, should live to justice; by whose stripes you were healed. For you were as sheep going astray; but you are now converted to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls’ (1 Peter 2:24-25). Jesus said, ‘I am the Good Shepherd, and I give my life for my sheep’ and in the Office for Paschal [Easter] time, the Church chants many times: ‘The Good Shepherd is risen, He who gave His life for His sheep and who died for His flock.’ Pastor, ext. 111 Fr. Dear Parishioners,

I share with you this meditation by Dan Burke on today’s Good Shepherd Sunday:

The liturgy today sums up in the gentle figure of the Good Shepherd all that Jesus has done for our souls.

Jesus said, ‘I am the Good Shepherd, and I give my life for my sheep’ and in the Office for Paschal [Easter] time, the Church chants many times: ‘The Good Shepherd is risen, He who gave His life for His sheep and who died for His flock.’

What could be a better synthesis of the whole work of the Redemption? It seems still more wonderful when we hear Jesus declare: ‘I am come that they may have life and may have it more abundantly’ (John 10:10).

In truth, He could well repeat to each one of us: ‘What more could I have done for you that I have not done?’ (cf. Isaiah 5:4). Oh, would that our generosity in giving ourselves to Him had no limits, after the pattern of His own liberality in giving Himself to us!

(From www.catholicexchange.com/good-shepherd-divine-intimacy-meditation)

Today the Church prays for men to hear God’s call to serve as Priests and Bishops representing Christ the Good Shepherd. Burke’s meditation helps us understand with what love your shepherds (in Latin, Pastors) should have in their ministry. Pray that there are those at Holy Faith who will become Priests in Christ the Good Shepherd.

CITY OF GAINESVILLE RECOGNITION OF HOLY FAITH

Holy Faith’s Parish Life Center is one of the recipients of the Gainesville City Beautification Awards of 2017. This is taken from the Awards Program, slightly revised:

“Holy Faith Catholic Parish was established in 1973 on what was then the outskirts of Gainesville. It is now in the center of Gainesville with a thriving membership of 2100 families. The two original buildings of the parish, a Parish Hall where Mass was originally celebrated and a Religious Education Building, were built in 1976.

“In 1982, the Founding Pastor Fr. Flannan Walsh, with the parishioners, built a Church and a Rectory. The Church is a modern structure, in some ways reminiscent of prairie style architecture and designed by the late Architect Bill Eppes. The well-built Church building using brown brick would be important for future buildings at Holy Faith.

“The 1976 buildings were built for a much smaller parish of the time. The buildings were aging and too small for the present parish. In 2013, Fr. John Phillips, the current Pastor, proposed that the parishioners build a new Parish Life Center, housing a Parish Hall and a Parish Learning Center, which would replace the two original buildings. The parishioners enthusiastically raised funds for construction.

“The new building was designed by Architects Billy Brame with Mick Richmond of Brame Heck Architects Inc. Parrish-McCall Constructors and its owner Mike Walsh with his team gave excellent service in the construction of the building.

“The new building is 18,000 square feet and located opposite the church building. A matching plaza was constructed in front of the church, new parking lots built and an attractive retention pond with a nature walk completed. Though some trees were cut for the project, the overall campus retains its ‘park-like’ character with lots of trees and landscaping. Also, three of the four parish buildings share some of the same style and material which give the campus a unified feel.

“The building was dedicated in September 2016 by Bishop Felipe J. Estévez, Bishop of Saint Augustine, Florida. The Parish Life Center has already served the parishioners well in faith education activities and the social life of the parish.”

Page 3: From the Heart of the Pastorfiles.constantcontact.com/86a07b19101/51ccbb4d-1c... · “In fact, in the weekly reckoning of time Sunday recalls the day of Christ's Resurrection. It

Pope St. John Paul II wrote an Apostolic Letter on the importance of Sunday, entitled “The Lord’s Day.” Written in 1998, our saintly pope wrote: “The coming of the Third Millennium, which calls believers to reflect upon the course of history in the light of Christ, also invites them to rediscover with new intensity the meaning of Sunday: its ‘mystery’, its celebration, its significance for Christian and human life.”

We have been hearing during this Easter Season about how after Christ first rose from the dead, he appeared on numerous occasions to his disciples on the “first day of the week.” In last Sunday’s Gospel from Luke 24:13-35, the Risen Christ made himself known to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus in the Scriptures and in the “Breaking of the Bread,” i.e. the Eucharist. This all happened, Luke reports, on the first day of the week, Sunday.

So Sunday has the greatest importance and priority for the Church at worship. Indeed, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York states that “the most significant event in the life of any parish is Sunday Mass.” Other liturgical celebrations of the parish are important, such as daily Mass and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, but nothing is more important than the Sunday Mass.

Again, Pope St. John Paul writes in his letter “The Lord’s Day”:

“In fact, in the weekly reckoning of time Sunday recalls the day of Christ's Resurrection. It is Easter which returns week by week, celebrating Christ's victory over sin and death, the fulfilment in him of the first creation and the dawn of ‘the new creation…’ (cf. 2 Cor 5:17).”

As Christians we need to recover the right and duty to attend Mass every Sunday. We gather on the First Day of the week to put God first in our week. We also need to hear that Christ is risen from the dead, not just at Easter or even during the Easter Season but every Sunday so that we live in Sunday’s message about the Resurrection: “Christ is victorious over sin and death.”

The Sunday Mass must take priority over everything else done in the Church building. Sunday demands “our best.” We need to approach Sunday Mass trying our best to make all welcome, to make sure all can see and hear the Mass and thereby participate in the fullest way possible. Whenever something is an obstacle to this, we should seek to correct it. The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops’ document on church art and environment states:

“The celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is the appropriate starting point for understanding the demands of space, sound, and visibility made upon a church building.” (Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship, Chapter 2)

“When we ponder, O Christ, the marvels accomplished on this day, the Sunday of your holy resurrection, we say: ‘Blessed is Sunday, for on it began creation . . . the world's salvation . . . the renewal of the human race. . . . On Sunday heaven and earth rejoiced and the whole universe was filled with light. Blessed is Sunday, for on it were opened the gates of paradise so that Adam and all the exiles might enter it without fear.’” (Quoted in Catechism #1167)
