FROM THE PASTOR Although the public celebration of Mass will resume this coming week (with restrictions), individual confessions will not begin until after June 1. I know that many of you will be anxious about going to Confession prior to receiving Holy Communion. The good news is that the Bishop has given permission to all pastors to give “General Absolution” prior to Masses through Pentecost (Sunday, May 31). General Absolution is not something that any of us have seen before, but it is a real thing. Ordinarily, it is reserved for the most pressing of emergencies, when there is no time for individual Confessions, such as the plane is crashing, the ship is sinking, or the soldiers are about to head into battle. A priest may NOT usually do it without the Bishop’s permission. Given the current circumstances in which we find ourselves, the Bishop has given the priests of the diocese the permission to give General Absolution until such time as individual Confessions resume. Here’s the way it will work: at the beginning of Mass, instead of one of usual forms of the Penitential Rite, we will go through the rite of General Absolution. It is a little bit longer than the normal Penitential Rite. At the end, I will pronounce the usual words of absolution, “And I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.” After that, you may receive Holy Communion with a clear conscience. What is required of you? You must have the usual disposition for sacramental Confession, i.e., sorrow for one’s sins and the firm purpose of amendment. Additionally, and this is most important for you to be validly absolved of your sins, you must have the firm intention of making a normal, individual Confession as soon as you are able. If you don’t plan on doing that, and then follow through, the absolution is invalid. Once individual confessions resume, I will schedule a number of “extra” times (in addition to the usual Saturday afternoons), so that everyone’s confessions can be accommodated. Fr. Tebalt
