From the Principal – Amanda WicksWelcome to Term 2!
Our teachers have been impressed with theway students have returned after holidaysfocusing on their learning so quickly. Allstudents have returned to their readinggroup routines and will continue to improvetheir skills with targeted teaching andsupport of teacher aides working with
students during reading group time.
We’d like to invite all parents who arrive before 8.30am withtheir children to read with their children by selecting a book fromthe Superhero Reading trolley. This will help your children reachtheir reading goals and build a love of reading! Our morningreading program is supported by donated books. If you haveany books at home you’d like to donate bring them along tothe office. Be on the lookout for our Superhero Storytelling onWednesday mornings – who will next week’s storyteller be?
Students, parents and staff gathered last week to farewellDeputy Principal, Greg Tagg who has been part of theCaboolture East family for the past 10 years. Greg’s serviceto the school and community was acknowledged as we paidtribute to his incredible energy and commitment to the besteducation for Caboolture East students. Greg has inspiredmany during his time at Caboolture East and will be missedby staff, students and parents and we wish him well in hisappointment to Moreton Downs SS. Getting ready for NAPLAN on 9, 10 and 11 May
In less than a fortnight our students in Years 3 and 5 willparticipate in the annual National Assessment Program –Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to assess their skills andunderstanding in the areas of Reading, Writing, LanguageConventions (i.e. Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) andNumeracy. These tests are done here at school and areconsidered just another part of the curriculum.
It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN isnot a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students areachieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standardsand compared with student peers throughout Australia.
For our parents of children in Years 3, and 5 there are a numberof ways you can help your child to prepare at home for theseupcoming tests;
• Talk to your child about the purpose of the tests andhow they will be given an opportunity to show whatthey have learnt in class.
• When you read together, ask your child questionsabout the story to make sure they understand whatthey are reading.
• Maintain a positive attitude about the tests.
• Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep leading up totests.
• Ensure your child exercises and eats healthy mealsregularly, including breakfast.
The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN isto let them know that it is just a routine part of their schoolprogram, and to urge them to do the best they can on the day.We encourage our students to be the best they can be.....soYear 3 and 5 it's your time to shine, best of luck!

Every Minute Counts ….
Your child’s best learning time is at the beginning of the day!School starts at 8.50am. Don’t be late! At Caboolture East SSwe classify a child as late if they arrive after 8.50am. Childrenare expected to fill in a late pass if they arrive after the bell. If achild is 15 minutes late everyday by the end of the year that isequivalent to 8 days away from school. Please ensure your childis on time for school every day. This is an opportunity for yourchild to learn the important life skills of punctuality through theirmorning school routine. Lateness impacts student learning andclassroom routines. Our lesson structure outlines the programfor the day and introduces the lesson in the first 10 to 15minutes of class, so if a student misses this it is hard to catchup.

Caboolture EastState School has a good reputation with district sports and wehave won awards in the past commending the school for itsgood sportsmanship. Remember to play fair and compete well.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN is fast approaching and we have been working hardduring Term 1 on preparing our students. Naplan is not stressfuland it’s only a ‘point in time’ test. We encourage students notto stress about Naplan as it’s only a small part of their learningat school. This year I’m encouraging all our Year 3 & 5 studentsto sit NAPLAN.
These tests identify whether all students have the literacy andnumeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for theirlearning, and for their productive and rewarding participation inthe community. Students are assessed using common nationaltests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
Final Word
It’s going to be an awesome term with lots to do. Can Iencourage each of our parents to ‘like us’ on Facebook as wepublish many of the events and important dates on Facebookeach week. Mrs Wicks, Mrs Holtham and myself also postupdates on class activities. This is a great way to stay in touchwith the school and check out what’s going on.
Shane Hoy – Deputy Principal

While I have greatly enjoyed working atCaboolture East SS during Term 1 as Engagement andWellbeing coach, I am looking forward to working withstudents, teachers and families in my new role as DeputyPrincipal. As our school priority is Reading, I am especially keento be visiting classrooms this term to see our students workingdiligently in their reading groups to develop their skills andachieve their new learning goals.
It has been wonderful to see children enjoying the new ReadingTrolleys before school and many parents sitting and sharingthis time with them. This is such an enriching experience foreveryone involved and is definitely fostering the love of readingin our students.
I look forward to building a strong working relationship withour families and please don’t hesitate to contact me if there isanything you would like to discuss.

Morning Routines
Starting this week there will be a slight change to the beforeschool routine. If the students arrive at school before 8:30am, they will now be asked to sit in their class lines behindthe labelled orange cones. They may choose a book from thereading trolleys to read themselves or to share with a friend orfamily member. They may also go to the toilet or get a drink asneeded.
At 8:30 am the usual bell will ring to signal that all children (eventhose waiting with their parents/caregivers) need to sit in theirlines and wait for their teacher to collect them. This procedurewill ensure a quick and orderly transition to the classroom soeveryone is ready to commence learning at 8:50 am.

Spotlight on Year 4
This week 4B and 4C identified areas around the school whereerosion has taken place. We then brainstormed solutions forpreventing this erosion. The students identified that the grasshad been eroded through mechanical weathering by studentstrampling the area. The top soil in the Junior Playground hadthen been washed away and had been deposited in thedrainage system, blocking the drain. They were very keen toprotect the playground areas from further erosion and weworked together to move the top soil and clear the drainage
3
pathway. We will continue to monitor the area to make sure it isprotected.

APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESSMONTH
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). (ASD) is adevelopmental and lifelong disability thataffects how a person learns and interactswith other people and their surroundings.
Autism occurs in both boys and girls across all cultures andcommunities.
The term ‘spectrum’ is used to indicate that no two peoplewith ASD are the same. The differences depend on thecombinations of social ability and understanding, communication level, cognitive ability, age, personality andmany other factors.
Autism was previously divided into subcategories, such as Asperger’s Syndrome,Pervasive Development Disorder nototherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Rhett
Syndrome. Now under the DSM 5 it all comes under theumbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
What are some of the characteristics of autism?
People with autism often have problems with communicationskills, social situations, restricted/repetitive interests andbehaviour, coping with their environment (sensory Issues) andlearning.
Communicating: People with autism may have problemsunderstanding others; talking about their own feelings; followinginstructions; or maintaining a conversation.
Socialising: People with autism may like to play alone or mayhave problems making and keeping friends. They may notknow how to join in a game or activity with others so they findsocial situations difficult.
Behaving: People with autism may have problems behavingappropriately in certain situations and environments. They maydislike change, have a strong interest in one topic or repeatactions or movements over and over again.
Coping with the environment: People with autism may haveproblems coping with noise, touch, certain smells, certaintastes, movement or people and objects around them.
Learning: People with autism may find learning difficult at timesdue to problems with attention and concentration, planningand organisation, understanding what is expected and stayingmotivated.
Symptoms of autism can sometimes be subtle and may notbecome obvious until a child starts school or moves intoadulthood. People with autism have strengths and skills andwith regular, consistent support, progress can be made.
