We look forward to seeing many parents enjoying our traditional Halloween Parade and parties. Here are the facts to help you: Morning kindergarteners will wear their costumes to school on Monday. They will have a parade inside our school and enjoy their parties later in the morning. Children in first through fifth grades may go home to put on their costumes. We will begin this dismissal at 11:45. Children should be picked up in the parking lot by the office. On that day you do not have to come to the office to sign out your child however you will need to notify your child’s teacher in writing or by email that they should be expecting you. The children going home will be supervised in the circle until you arrive. Please make sure your child clearly understands if you will be coming. (Halloween can be confusing.) This pick-up of children is hectic so please be patient when connecting with your child. The children going home can return anytime – 1:30 at the latest! Children staying at Grove will get into costumes after lunch and recess. Teachers will help in any way they can. Our parade launches from the Grove Avenue side of our school. Shortly after 2:00 PM we will be walking and having our younger students walk with their older buddies. Our parade route is north on Grove from the school; east on Wisconsin to Summit; south on Summit to Yale; west on Yale to Cook; and north on Cook to the school. This exciting day continues as children participate in charming parties designed by our talented room parents. Lice Patrol Head lice have been found in various classrooms this week. Please use the weekend to check your child’s head in order to rule out this problem for your home. There is information on our website under the “Health Office” Quick Link (Lice Information) to give you suggestions for finding and treating head lice.

Taffy Apple Sale Thanks for your wonderful support of our taffy apple sale. The children have enjoyed this treat during lunch time and we will continue to sell them next week until they are sold out. (The cost is $1 for plain, sprinkles or peanut.) Thanks PTO

• Our PTO book fair was terrific and having it during parent-teacher conferences allowed for many of you to purchase some great new books for your children. Many parents volunteered to make this such a success. Thanks, Page Majewski and Cathleen Garcia, for co-chairing this wonderful PTO event and donating so much time for the cause of reading!

• The PTO Hospitality Chairs, Michelle Price and Stephanie Mulligan, organized two evening meals for the teachers during parent-teacher conferences. It is a wonderful treat for us during these hectic days to be able to take a bit of time and relax and enjoy tantalizing food that you provide us.

• The gift wrap sale has ended. Thanks for participating in this event. Meticulous organizers include Kim Meek and Desi Katris. Delivery will occur in a timely manner before the holidays.

Internet Safety for our Kids We encourage the parents of our fourth and fifth graders to participate in a discussion about the topic of internet safety and cyber bullying. Rebecca Banach, Grove’s librarian, and Coy Walcott, Grove’s social worker, will address the topic and help you formulate decisions at home for your kids. This is an important topic that has important implications for your families. Join us! Thursday, November 3, 2011: 10:30 AM –Multipurpose Room (PTO Meeting) 7:00 PM – Music Room Cross Country On Monday, October 24 the spirit of hundreds of fifth grade runners from our district filled the autumnal air of Beese Park as these kids participated in the annual District 220 Fifth Grade Cross Country Meet. Our Grove teams did a wonderful job having prepared for this event for weeks by running distances not only on our school grounds, but also at area parks to get a feel for running on grassy surfaces, traditionally used for cross country events. I thank our adult coaches for encouraging a large number of fifth grade participants to enjoy this challenging sport. Our runners will again run in the spring when our boys and girls running clubs resume their workouts. The girls’ coaches include Amy Breidenbach, LaDonna Cavicchioni and Dawn Emrath. Our boys’ coaches are Josh Rollins, Coy Walcott and Todd Wiencek. Here are our illustrious runners: Boys Team Members include: Jake Ackard Mario Armocida Alex Boyajian Matt Boyajian Matthew Bischof Brian Diaz Xavier Fonseca Brian Hur Ryan Jackson Colin Kim Jake Kindzierski Andrew Kinsey Alex Menikoff Seiwa Murakawa Noah Olis Jason Owsley Max Pluta Joshua Pyon Matthew Rahfaldt Robert Tessarolo Marcus Tsukahara Cal Uhryniak Nick Valencia Chris Varghese Girls Team Members include: Naya Amin Brooke Carlock Ashley Chang Emma Dooley Emma Howell Maya Kurup Kelsye Pendzimaz Maria Pritchett Kelsey Recinas Hannah Rogers Grace Roper Iris Rosen Taylor Sewell Miranda Towler Amanda Valencia Lily Weidler Jessica Yu

Fifth graders at Grove Avenue School have had many opportunities and experiences since the start of the school year. We are proud of the growth that students

have made by taking on challenges with a positive attitude. Our recent trip to Timber-lee allowed students to leave their comfort zone for the sake of their team. Students made new friends, and these lasting relationships will lead to success throughout the school year. Looking forward, students now have an opportunity to take advantage of the many activities available to fifth graders. We would love to see students pick up a book and participate in Grove's Book Battles, grab a basketball and join the fifth grade basketball team, or memorize a script for speech tournament.

As your student grows during his or her fifth grade year, keep in mind that your parental support continues to form the base for strong organizational skills and confidence. We consistently ask our students to put forth their best effort on a daily basis.
