SENIOR SCHOOLINGGold and Silver StudentsCongratulations to all Seniors who achieved a Silver or Gold award at this week’s assembly. Despite being one of the colder mornings of the school year, it truly was wonderful to see so many students walk across the stage to collect their certificates.I always look forward to knowing which Seniors are upholding our school values of Positive, Productive, Proud and Prepared and paving the way for other students to follow their example in effort, behaviour and achievement.Parent Teacher InterviewsThank you to everyone who took the chance to connect with teachers on Monday 10 August. Staff were available on site and also through Microsoft Teams or via telephone. Please do feel free to contact the school at any time to make appointments with our staff.Reports and the QCEIn Senior, it is important that students are passing every subject every semester in order to achieve their QCE. For Year 11, this generally means that students need to receive an A, B or C on their report cards to be considered ‘satisfactory’ and accrue QCE points.More information can be found here ->https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/snr_new_assess_qce_faq_student_families.pdfhttps://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/snr_new_assess_te_qce_factsheet_requirements.pdfThe QCE is Queensland’s Senior school qualification, which is awarded to eligible students usually at the end of Year 12. The QCE recognises broad learning options and offers flexibility in what, where and when learning occurs.Students who are on track to pass their QCE will be awarded their certificate at the end of Year 12. Interviews with Year 11 and 12 students to track their progress and set goals for QCE achievement will happen this term. All students who finish Year 12 receive a transcript of their learning account in the form of a Senior Statement, which is issued in December. After finishing Year 12, students who become eligible for a QCE will receive a Statement of Results; a cumulative transcript of their learning account. These will be issued every July and December.Year 10SET PlanningCareers Day on the 3rd of August was a great success followed by a well-attended information evening. Students now have the subject selection guide and line structure to choose their subjects going into 2021.

Year 7 In the last newsletter, I highlighted the wonderful academic, effort and behaviour results across the school in our Semester One report cards. This edition, I would like to congratulate our Year 7 students on their efforts. Despite commencing during a challenging year, they have made a wonderful start to their high school studies. Great work Year 7.

Student Learning and Wellbeing FrameworkWe currently have a team of teachers developing our school’s Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework. This will allow us to determine how to best align our student services and development programs to best support our students. In the coming weeks, we will be conducting a Student Resilience Survey to get a global picture of wellbeing in the school so that we can determine some priority areas. All data will be aggregated and anonymous. If you would like us to ensure that your child does not participate in this survey, please call the office or email [email protected].

ABSENCE REPORTING

If your child is absent, you can

Gold and Silver Awards

This week has been rather big for our Junior Secondary students, starting off with a wonderful celebration of outstanding effort and behaviour for Gold and Silver students at our Awards Ceremony on Monday. We had over half of our Junior Secondary cohort achieving these prestigious awards, with our Year 7s having their first opportunity to be recognised since commencing High School - well done students!Junior Secondary Transition

Our Junior Secondary Transition Program is underway this week too, kicking off with visits to our local primary schools to share with Year 6 students what life at high school is like. Special

thanks to Ms Luff (HOD HPE/ Junior Secondary) and our Junior Secondary Captains - Bree and Lachie Crighton - for helping to make these visits a success. Year 6 students learnt about the great opportunities available to them as they enter Year 7 at PSHS, discovered what our 4 Ps stand for (Proud, Productive, Prepared, Positive) and started thinking about their first official Transition Day with us on the 1st September 2020. Parent/Teacher interviews Thank you to parents/carers for attending parent teacher interviews earlier this week – in person, over the phone or via the link provided. We know that communication between school and home is hugely important to a child’s success in school. Parent/Teacher interviews provide a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your student’s success and focus on future learning goals together. Attendance By the time you receive this week’s newsletter, we will be halfway through Term 3. This means that your student should have been at school for 25 days so far. Pittsworth State High School aims for all students to average 95% attendance as a minimum by making “Every Day Count”. If your student is absent, whether it is a full day or part day, this absence must be approved with a valid reason through the office via a note or parent phone call. By missing one day of school a fortnight, your student misses 20 days a term, equating to four weeks per year and nearly one and a half years over their 13 years of schooling. Thank you for ensuring your student attends regularly.

Students are finding out more information about subject offerings throughout the week and planning their futures through a Vocational Interest Questionnaire. This tool looks at work interests, job recommendations and a career action plan so that we can start to focus on possible career paths and subject choices to help shape individual futures. We will also be hosting a SET Planning Day on 8th September where students select their subjects for 2021. Students in Year 10 will only be required to attend their interviews on the day of 8th September. No classes will be running for students in Year 10 on that day.Year 122020 External Assessment TimetableExternal assessments will run from Monday 26 October to Tuesday 17 November 2020 and students are reminded that attendance at these exams is essential. Students completing Certificate Courses, School Based Traineeships, Apprenticeships or TAFE study will also be required to remain at school to complete their modules from Monday 26 October until Friday 20 November. Families should not plan holidays etc during this essential assessment time.We will be supporting students within subjects to prepare for their assessment tasks, including hosting a mock-exam and intervention in Term 4 before External Assessment Exams occur. For more information, please access the QCAA website -> https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/external-assessment where you will also find information about how to apply for Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments should they be required.Students studying Essential Maths and Essential English will be required to write their Common Internal Assessment during the week commencing Monday 26th October.Tertiary Applications OpenAll Year 12 students are reminded that QTAC applications are now open. This process is for students wanting to study all post-secondary (Cert III and above) and tertiary level courses (Diploma and above). The QTAC website really is a valuable resource to investigate all kinds of study options for next year. http://www.qtac.edu.au/homeThere is an abundance of information about upcoming key dates, courses and common application questions on the site. We encourage all students to familiarise themselves with the website. QTAC Application processes begin in August and we will be working with students to ensure they remain informed throughout the term.USQ Visit

Two students from USQ attended Pittsworth SHS recently and spoke to some of our Senior students about university life, applications, scholarships and courses. This was a great opportunity, for those interested, to gain some insight on life at a university.

Positions Vacant Bell ShakespeareBell Shakespeare, one of Australia’s most respected theatre companies, joined us on Wednesday for a series of workshops on the Bard. Thom, our artist in residence for the day, worked with our Year 12s in the morning on the bloody tale of Macbeth before Ms McCulloch’s Year 10s benefitted from his expertise and enthusiasm for Romeo and Juliet. The workshops were highly interactive with students thoroughly engaged in dissecting the language, characters and themes of these canonical texts. One of our top Year 11s, Kirilly Mahon, was also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to audition with Bell Shakespeare for one of their coveted theatre scholarships. She presented a monologue from Luciana, working with Thom to take direction and present the fiery monologue in several different ways. We wish her all the very best with the audition process.

Due to the severe sensitivity of some of our community members, aerosol sprays are not permitted at Pittsworth SHS. Parents and caregivers: please ensure spray cans are not brought to school and that roll-on deodorants are substituted in their place. Assist in making Pittsworth State High School a safe place for all by checking your student’s bag for aerosol cans before they leave for school.

On Monday 3rd August, we held our annual Careers Day for Grade 10 students. 26 Millmerran State School students also joined us for the day. We had guest speakers from a broad range of career and educational pathways. Each presenter gave the students an insight into how they can achieve their desired goals for the future. The first of our speakers was Paul Keevers from McLean Farms who was able to give students some ideas on the career paths that Mclean’s are able to offer as well as some valuable tips on what employers look for in an interview. McLean Farms Pittsworth is run by third generation farmers whose family have been supplying Australia with eggs for over 50 years. Our second speakers were Steph O’Sullivan and Kate Price - both Nursing professionals. Steph is a Registered Nurse and Midwife. Kate is a Registered Nurse who works in the ICU. Both ladies were able to inform students on the different pathways you can study to become a Registered Nurse, as well as the different levels of nursing. It was obvious listening to each of them speak that they are both very passionate about their careers. Adam Cronin - a PSHS Teacher - gave students some information regarding studying a Certificate III in Fitness here at PSHS. When surveyed earlier in the year, the Fitness Industry ranked as one of the top careers of interest. The next session saw students rotate between four groups of presenters: Elaine from TAFE, Nick and Frances from Intergen, Alan from Busy@Work, Darren and Ben from Golden West Apprenticeships along with Simon and Lance from the Defence Forces. Each session offered valuable knowledge about the different careers paths and Vocational study options that can help achieve work goals. The Defence Force team also challenged some of the students to doing some push ups - well done! After lunch, we had the privilege to hear from locals - Chris from QLD Ambulance Service and Doug from QLD Fire & Emergency Services. It was great to hear the different pathways you need to take for each profession and what opportunities can be taken in each position. Our last session of the day was two young students from The University of Southern Queensland. They were able to provide

2020 Early School Leavers SurveyThe Queensland Government is seeking the support of our school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2019, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future. Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2020. For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

Year 10 Careers Daysome useful information regarding scholarships, Head Start Programs and different ways to gain University entrance. Thank you to our guest speakers for giving their time to speak with our students. They have no doubt gained some insight into what direction their future is heading and the pathway they are able to take to achieve their dreams.

Hey Yandillians! We hope you’ve all had an amazing week. As most people are heading into assessment time, we would like to remind you that ‘you’ve got this’. Please don’t stress, just hustle hard, and keep

going! It’s so, so, so important that you aren’t leaving your assignments unitl the last minute. Try to complete as much as you can at home, while balancing other activities like sporting commitments or outdoor activities. It’s also so important that you get enough sleep and are eating healthy. I know and completely understand how hard it is to do this while you are busy, but getting enough food is extremely important, especially if you want to ‘get things done’. Also, stacking enough zzzz is extremely important because you need to keep your energy levels up. We’d like to congratulate all Grade 12s for finishing their first set of assessments for this Semester, well done. We’re sure you are already starting to watch the clock. Also, make sure you are coming to school every day. We accrue much-needed house points for this, not to mention keep up with important assignment information.

Well, that’s all from us. GO YANDILLA!!!!

From your Junior Yandilla Leaders: Matt and Ella

G’day g’day wonderful people and welcome to the end of Week Five- halfway there! Well, have your SRC been busy over the last few weeks! Last weekend was the final stage of toilet beautification and we are more than delighted to say we are very impressed with

the finished product. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of the students and staff who assisted, whether it be by taking up rollers, having a crack at cutting in or drawing up our amazing quotes and stencils; we cannot express our gratitude enough. Without doubt, it was so inspiring to see all of those who got on board so happily sacrifice their weekends to lend a hand, making our school environment the best it can be for our students. In other news, we are pleased to announce that Cosy Day will be running Thursday next week, so chuck on those winter woolies and head down to the auditorium to purchase fresh pancakes as well as hot chocolates! All funds raised will be going back to the SRC so that we may continue to provide fresh ideas and projects for the school.

Have an awesome week everyone,Kirilly

CAPTAIN’S CORNERHey guys, hope you’ve all had a great week. Our fortnightly focuses are being positive and productive. We can achieve this in many ways. Firstly, get involved with events around the school and bring your friends. This is an easy way to generate and spread positivity. There are plenty of activities coming up in the next couple of weeks so keep an eye out for them. The SRC are running a Cosy Day on the Thursday of Week 6 so get organised and show your support for our amazing SRC. If you haven’t already checked out the Junior bathroom beautification, I encourage you to do so as so many people worked really hard to achieve this for our younger students. Secondly, as things are starting to get busier with assessment due, it is integral that we are being productive both at home and at school. Ensure you’re using your school planners to your advantage and write down all of your homework and upcoming assessment. Try and have a study schedule and stick to it. Put your phone away on silent and really focus to get the best out of the time you’re studying. If you’re focused, you’re going to get it done quicker and to a higher standard than you would with distractions. Once you’ve finished, then reward yourself and relax. Just remember that school is your priority so put it first. Have a great week all and don’t forget to stay positive and productive.

Thanks,Amy

Bella Girls

The Bella Girls program is thriving after the disruption of Term 2 and the return of presenter Kate Price. This term has seen the girls of 8C discover their beauty, value and purpose. They have particularly considered the impact that frenemies (i.e. friends that aren’t what they appear to be) can have on others and how they should be treating their friends. This week, the class learned the importance of looking after their skin and what they can do to make sure they are valuing themselves and their health. They finished off with fun, relaxing, COVID-safe mini-facials! Coming weeks will see this group engaged in learning and activities about social media and value of the body.

Bella Girls Co-ordinator, Mrs Schultz Outside Auditorium, 1st and 2nd break

Pittsworth State High school attended their first ever Queensland Schools Cup Volleyball Championships at the Gold Coast over the weekend. With around 2000 students from all over Queensland attending, competition was tight.

The girls were placed in a tough pool and played really well narrowly going down in both of their Friday games with the final margins across each match being less than 5 points over 3 sets. On Saturday, the girls turned their fortunes around finding a way to win their tight matches ending the day with 6 wins and a draw from their 9 sets over 3 games. By the end of Sunday, we had actually scored more points than conceded across the whole tournament. The girls finished 6th place overall which was a fantastic result not only as their debut in this competition but for some, being the first time representing the school for any sport at all. By the end of the tournament,

Queensland Schools Cup Volleyball

our coaches had lost track of the number of positive comments about team performance and attitude both on and off the court.

Saturday 29 August 20208:30am - 11:30am

We are busy planning for National Science Week commencing Monday 17 August. The theme for 2020, Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans (which cover two-thirds of Earth’s total surface area). They constantly lap our shorelines providing us with not only enjoyment but create climates, absorb carbon dioxide and grow unique ecosystems, therefore it is impossible for us as citizens to ignore our oceans. The ocean theme enables students to discover and investigate how humans are affecting the delicate balance of these ecosystems along with Australia’s world-renowned contributions to marine science and innovations. So your child can fully participate in the activities, please remind them to bring leather shoes on their designated day. This Week @ Science - TW@S students have investigated exothermic reactions with elephant’s toothpaste, Zombie Walking in Physics and Rainbow Fizz in Chemistry.

Science Week Year 10 EnglishMiss McCulloch’s Year 10 English class have been working through an in-depth study of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Students have been enjoying acting out key scenes along with creating tableaux to both consolidate understanding of key events and commit the text to memory. We are working through the 5 Acts of Romeo and Juliet, one week at a time - also viewing Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation as we progress. We were excited to welcome Bell Shakespeare this week - Australia’s national theatre company specialising in the works of William Shakespeare. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to work with an expert in the field.

Hospitality HappeningsYear 8D Hospitality- School lunches

Southbrook MuralMrs Audrey Williams (Senior Art Teacher) and Mr O’Neill had the pleasure of being invited by Southbrook Central Principal, Mr Lars De Gier, to inspect the new mural installed at the school. We must acknowledge the wonderful work of our Year 11 Visual Arts in Practice students who created the 20 panels that make up the mural. They did a great job of ensuring each panel matched its neighbour thematically and still met their assessment requirements. The mural reflects the rural and agricultural nature of the Southbrook area as well as the joys of learning. It is wonderful to work so closely with our local schools. Well done students.

Sport newsMultiple sporting opportunities are coming up. Following our recent volleyball success, we have ramped up training for Year 9/10 Volleyball comps with over 30 students committed so far. This is a great step forward in raising the profile of sport at PSHS.The Queen of the Range Girls rugby league comp is happening in early September, with a meeting to be held first break on Monday regarding this. There will also be a multi sport Junior Gala Day closer to the end of term. Sign up sheets for this will be released next week. As always, these opportunities are dependent on nominations. If we don’t reach the required number of students interested, we will be unable to attend.Open Boys Rugby League: The team had their first win of the season in front of up to 100 supporters at Club Pittsworth this week. The boys bounced back from a tough game against Dalby with a 50-4 win over Centenary. The victory can be attributed to far better ball control than the previous match. Our forwards, led by Liam Ruhle and Otto Friedrichs, ran hard lines gaining field position, while our halves were able to coordinate across the field. This enabled our left edge to kick into gear very early, with Kyle Commens an ever present threat at left center scoring a couple of tries throughout the game. Overall a great team performance that coach Adam Cronin was very happy with. We have another home game Wednesday next week and we encourage as many people as possible to come down and support the boys.
