You may remember that this blew down in the storm early last year, but at last the insurance claim has come through and we have a replacement – even better than the first one! Congratulations Mrs Ullrich Congratulations to Mrs Roseanne Ullrich who has been selected to take on the Principal position at Yealering Primary School during Semester 2, while Principal, Damien Lloyd is away. The expertise, skills and experience that Roseanne will gain in this leadership role will be invaluable on her return to East Narrogin Primary School next year. It is intended that Mrs Dale Hohipuha will replace Roseanne as classroom teacher of Room 5 Year 2/3 for Terms 3 and 4. Dale has a wealth of experience as a classroom teacher and has an excellent knowledge of our school’s policies, procedures and whole school approaches. All students in public schools from Years 1-7 will receive the same format for reporting and are allocated grades to indicate attainment of the Expected Standards for each year level. Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community

This week we have commenced our swimming lessons which will run until Friday, 22 June for students from P-7. Students in Rooms 4, 6, 8 and the off-site kindy are also very excited as their new interactive whiteboards are being installed this week. Thanks to our generous P&C we now have interactive whiteboards in EVERY classroom in our school! It’s also a good week for our early childhood centre children who will have been looking forward to playing in their new fort. samples. I have included a fact sheet in this newsletter to describe more about the ways that teachers allocate grades. I urge parents and caregivers to carefully read the comments also provided in the student report as these provide more information about each child’s approach to learning and specific support required to improve. Parents can also request an interview with the teacher to discuss further support for students. Reporting for children in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary also occurs each semester but the format differs from school to school and does not include the allocation of grades.

Reports will be sent home on Wednesday, 4 July in Week 11. Please talk to your child’s teacher if you have questions about reporting.

WAMSE Science and Society and Environment Assessment for Years 5 and 7 Next term in Week 3 (6-10 August), our Year 5 and 7 students will be tested in Science and Society and Environment as part of the Western Australian Monitoring Standards in Education (WAMSE) assessment for 2012. This testing will allow us to have some extra information to make judgements on how well our Science and Society curriculum is meeting the needs of our students. Results of these assessments will be known to us at the end of the year. A brochure will be sent home to families with children in these year levels with this newsletter.

Resiliency This week’s newsletter inclusion on Resiliency to support our health plan is the last for this term. This week I have included an At Home Activity Sheet, Raising Resilient Teenagers. More information can be found on the SDERA site at: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/sdera/detcms/portal/. Next term our health plan will focus on Road Safety.

YEAR 7 LEADERSHIP The leadership group welcomed Mrs Rachel Howe and Mrs Belynda Smith, Town Librarians to our leadership meeting this week. Belynda and Rachel spoke about their role as librarians in our community and how they have created a welcoming, comfortable place for the people of Narrogin to be informed, inspired and engaged. Rachel and Belynda are involved in regular special events, including author talks, writing workshops, Poet’s Cafe (in conjunction with Arts Narrogin), Saturday Stories for kids and more. On School holidays the library has regular events at 2pm Monday-Friday which includes activities such as cooking, gardening, craft and more.

Congratulations to Iszak Milentis Iszak has been selected to represent Western Australia in the 2012 State 12’s Hockey Team. This team will be competing at the National Schools Championships in Adelaide, South Australia from the 4 to 10 August 2012. State representation is an honour and often represents a signification stepping stone in the ultimate achievement of senior and national selection. We are very proud of Iszak’s achievement and commend him for the work he has done to attain this level.

It’s not too late to pay your school fees and win a great prize! We are again offering the chance for all those who have paid their voluntary contributions to win a wonderful prize. The winning ticket will be drawn out at the class

assembly on our last day of Term 2. All families who have paid their fees up to this date will go into the draw to win a complete Wii Fit package, kindly donated by WFI, Ballard Seeds and the Bradford Family.

Next year our school turns 50! If you would like to help coordinate our school’s 50th anniversary, please complete the slip in this newsletter and return it to the school office. Please pass this information on to anyone else who may wish to be involved.

Teen Talk on Fridays 4pm – 12+ kids meet to discuss books, films and music Book Club – this book club meets on the second Friday of each month at 11am to discuss a book they’ve read. This free group is open to all – just bring a sense of humour and a willingness to try new reads! Parents’ Book Club – this baby/toddler friendly group meet on the fourth Monday of each month at 11am to discuss a book they’ve read. This free group is open to all – just bring along a sense of humour and your patience with interruptions from littlies, as well as a willingness to try new reads! Pizza and Paperbacks - a special teen program that runs bi-monthly on a Thursday evening. Contact Library staff for the next session’s theme, and consider dressing up! Parent Information Talks - talks for parents, ranging from babies to teens, and using some of the amazing resources and people we have here in Narrogin to present the information. Contact Library staff for details of the next talk. Narrogin Connects – a meeting for service organisations in Narrogin to help foster connections and interagency support. GOOD STANDING At the end of the term the Good Standing reward will be a whole school Numeracy morning. Any parent who offers their assistance will earn passport points on this day. ATTENDANCE UPDATE There is strong evidence in research showing high attendance equals stronger school results. It is important students maintain strong attendance patterns to support school achievement. We encourage all students to aim for 90% or higher with their personal

attendance rates. Two key Western Australian research studies by the Institute for Child Health Research have shown that a student’s level of school attendance has a major influence on their academic achievement. These studies concluded that :

• A child’s education is at risk if they frequently miss

more than half a day of school a week (less than 90 per cent attendance). Attendance above 90 per cent

is considered regular attendance.

• If a student’s attendance remains low, the pattern of absence can create gaps in their core skills such as literacy and numeracy.

• Students who are regularly absent are also less likely to fully participate socially or in the workforce. Some of the issues faced by these students can include long-term employment, involvement in the justice system and placing themselves at physical risk when they are not at school.

The real Impact of Missing school can mean: • if a child misses an average of five days a term (years

1 to 10), they miss out on approximately one year of school

• if a child misses one day a week of school (from years 1 to 10), they will miss almost two years of school

• if a child misses 1.5 days a week of school (from years 1 to 10), they will miss almost three years of school

• if a child misses two days a week of school (from years 1 to 10), they will miss almost four years of school

• if a child misses three days a week of school (from years 1 to 10), they will miss almost six years of school

• if a child misses five weeks a term (years 1 to 10), they miss almost five years of school

BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast club is open for all students every day of the week from 8.20am. If any parent would like to help out please contact the office. This will also earn passport points. Many thanks for the continued support our Year 7 leaders are providing each morning with setting up and making breakfasts. AUSSIE OF THE MONTH The Year 7 student leaders have developed a list of criteria for this award at each formal school assembly. Staff monitor students’ efforts in the playground using this guide to select Aussie of the Month.

GOOD STANDING This week is WEEK 2 of our Good Standing Cycle. We will have our Good Standing Reward in Week 11 on Friday, 6 July.

PASSPORT PROGRAM If there are any more families that are interested in joining our passport program please fill in the slip in this newsletter and send to Mr Johan van Wyk. Parents and students can earn points for their passport and these points can be redeemed for East Narrogin Dollars which in turn can be used to pay for excursions, lunches and also school uniforms.

WINTER LIGHTNING CARNIVAL In week 9 Friday, 22 June all our Year 5 – 7 students will participate in the Winter Lightning Carnival. The students will participate in round robin games in Netball, Hockey, Soccer and Football. All the games will be held at the Narrogin Leisure Centre. Consent and medical forms need to be back at school by Monday, 18 June

IN HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY We will have our Faction Cross Country on Monday, 25 June. This will only be for Year 5 – 7 students and they received a nomination sheet yesterday to nominate for this event. The nomination sheet needs to be returned to Mr Darvall no later than 22 June. We would like parents to encourage their children if possible to participate in this event. The District Cross Country will be held in Week 2 of Term 3 on Friday, 3 August at the Thomas Hogg Oval in Narrogin.

There isn’t much office space and it can get very crammed. What tips would you give someone starting in your

To be involved in the Spring Festival How did you become partners in your job? Rachel was acting in charge of the library before Belynda came to town. G’day parents! I pray all is going well. As it is soon coming up to Aussie of the Month time I would like to encourage you all to lead by example. During classes, recess, lunch time, breakfast club, before and after school the teachers and student leaders are looking out for students who stand out. Whether it is things like being well mannered, helping out another student with something, helping in breakfast club, playing well out in the playground or simply picking up a piece of rubbish and putting it in the bin rather than leaving it there. So encourage your kids and keep an eye out to see who gets the award. To the kids, I would like to encourage you all to start thinking about how can you make a difference? What can you do to make the school a better place? Take the first steps and be an example to others to follow. Who is going to be the next Aussie of the Month? Looking forward to seeing who gets it. See you around the playground

Year 7 Leadership Interview

How long did it take you to be a librarian? Rachel is studying a graduate certificate. Belynda studied an arts degree and then a librarianship at university. Belynda commented that the librarian course was the hardest course she has ever done. What do you do to keep little kids engaged when

you read to them? Rachel is very good at playschool songs, nursery rhymes and playing different characters using different voices. The toddlers enjoy acting and singing the rhymes. What did you want to be when you were younger? We both wanted to be teachers. What are some highlights in your job? We both love helping people. It is great to see so many people enjoying the library. It is becoming a community hub. Do you have any goals for the library? Our strategic plan is for the library to be bigger. We would love to build a new library. What is the hardest part of working as a librarian? The hardest part is making sure staff are enjoying their work and ensuring we are catering for our community. We are always learning. Has leadership been an important part of your

role? Yes, definitely. We aim to be good role models in our community by offering a variety of support to everyone. Who is your favourite illustrator or author? Shaun Tan is an excellent illustrator. Our favourite authors for teens are Jackie French, Percy Jackson and the Dear Dumb Diary Series is very popular.

Our theme for Indonesian is ‘Vegetables and Fruit’. Last week the Year 2 to 7 students made three different types of fruit smoothies. Students were really excited about making the smoothies and they enjoyed drinking them. Most importantly, they also learned Indonesian at the same time and the importance of eating a balanced diet. FACT SHEET: SEMESTER ONE

REPORTING TO PARENTS in YEARS 1-7

Teachers allocate grades A-E when they report to parents at the end of each semester for students from Years 1-7. Standards will be reported in grades A-E with the Expected Standard represented by the C Grade. This is consistent with the Australian Curriculum approach with which teachers have been familiarising this year – in English, Maths, Science and History. The other learning areas (Health and Physical Education, LOTE, The Arts, Technology and Enterprise and parts of Society and Environment) will relate to the WA Curriculum Framework, until their implementation in future years.

For all curriculum areas teachers have clearly stated Expected Standards for the end of each year. When deciding on a grade at the end of Semester One, teachers take into account the progress a student has made towards those standards. To make this on-balance professional judgement, teachers: consider what a student can already do; consider the knowledge, understanding and skills taught up to that point in time; compare student achievement with the Expected Standards for each grade; take into account the student’s previous grades; consider other assessments; and allocate the grade that best matches what a student has achieved so far in relation to the Expected Standard.

VERY IMPORTANT POINT: *** Expected progress is the maintenance of a grade. If a student receives the same grade for two consecutive reports he or she has made progress.

GRADE DESCRIPTORS

A Excellent The student demonstrates achievement that has greatly exceeded the expected standard. Their achievement is well beyond what is expected at this year level. B Good The student demonstrates achievement that exceeds the expected standard. C Satisfactory The student demonstrates achievement at the expected standard. The student is able to progress to the next level of learning. D Limited Demonstrates achievement below the expected standard. The student demonstrates a quality of learning that is adequate for progression but will still need additional support or assistance to progress. E Very Low The student demonstrates achievement below the minimum acceptable for this year level.

A message from The Town of Narrogin HOMER STREET ROAD UPGRADE

From Tuesday, 5 June to Saturday, 30 June a major upgrade of Homer Street and its intersections will be undertaken. Sections of the road WILL BE CLOSED for short periods of time. Please refrain from using Homer Street during this time.

East Narrogin Primary School is now an accredited Centrelink Centrepay Business.

What does this mean? Families who receive payment from Centrelink may now purchase school uniforms, purchase items from school booklists, pay for excursions and school voluntary contributions. The nominated costs will be deducted fortnightly, at an agreed rate, from their payments.

Super Starters - A Kindy Readiness Group Southern Wheatbelt Primary Health is running “Super Starters” a Kindy Readiness Group in Narrogin in term three. The group gives children a chance to practice many of the skills they will need for kindy including cutting, turn taking, following instructions and motor planning. The group will run in Narrogin for six Tuesdays, commencing on 31 July 2012. All children who will be attending kindy in 2013 are welcome to attend with their parents. The group will be at Narrogin Primary Health and run between 9.30am and 11.00am. At each session there are three activities one which a speech and language focus, one with a fine motor focus and one with a gross motor focus. There are also mat sessions with stories, singing, dancing and discussions. Fruit will be provided for morning tea for the children. Each week will have a theme with some of the themes being :All About Me”, “The Farm” and “The Jungle”. The sessions will be facilitated by a Physiotherapist, Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist. Bookings are essential so please contact Anna Kempton on 9881 0385 to register your child.

New Enrolments for 2013

Enrolments for 2013 are now open for children starting Kindergarten. Please make sure you get your application for enrolment in by 3 August 2012. The following are required for enrolments:

• Immunisation Records

Children must be born between 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009 to enter into Kindergarten. Application to Enrol forms can be collected from the front office.
