Welcome to learning at Geebung
State School for 2020! It’s been
great to re-connect with our families
and welcome our new families to
our learning community. We have
some great things planned for the
year so there is great excitement.
Each and every member of our
school community believes that
each and every child can and will
achieve.
I’d like to welcome our new team members for 2020. Em-
ma Banks is the class teacher for Prep B and Bill Graham
is the class teacher for 4A. We also welcome back
Jodana Tarrant and Leigh Baker teaching 2A.
The entire teaching team have been planning and prepar-
ing for our students and it’s been a pleasure to see the
passion and effort from the teaching team.
We are DRIVEN in 2020! Today each family will receive a
magnet with the core priorities our team will be focusing on
to help maximise student achievement and personal
growth in 2020. We will use daily captures of information
(Data) to inform our teaching. We have shifted our ra-
dar to Reading and we want to develop all of our students
to be Inquisitive learners. We will teach and uphold our
whole Community Values. Our teachers use Explicit
teaching to make learning intentions clear for our students.
We will continue to Nurture the well-being of our students
and staff.
Homework provides a link between home and school.
Each year level is expected to participate in some form of
homework. When parents take a short time out to each
day to connect with their children doing homework this as-
sists in building a culture at home that supports effort and
desire to learn. You will find goals for your child in the
homework book that can give you a starting point for con-
versation as you talk about school, learning and their days
together as a family.
This week the P&C will meet. Leadership positions need
to be filled. The school has a strong working relationship
with the P&C and the P&C relies on people who are pre-
pared to step into these roles for ongoing success. Please
seriously consider and speak to Sandy McKenzie if you
want to know more information about any of the roles that
exist. Can I also again thank Sandy for her contribution to
the P&C over many years through a range of roles. The
school community is so appreciative of her and we wish
the McKenzie family every success in their next life chap-
ters.
A reminder that formal uniform is to be worn on Tuesdays.
Last week we conducted our first random uniform inspec-
tions. We sent home some reminder notices to assist par-
ents in meeting the correct uniform requirements. We will
continue to conduct these every two weeks on different
days. A reminder that correct uniform is one of the criteria
for the Geebung Flyer Awards offered each term.
A reminder to all parents that the school provides supervi-
sion for students from 8:30am. Students should not be
unsupervised earlier than this on the school grounds.
Thank you to everyone as we work together to provide a
safe space in and around the school whilst driving and
parking. Remember to only park in designated areas and
be mindful that there are hundreds of children about so
drive slowly thank you.

Welcome back to Geebung State School. I hope you enjoyed a wonderful break and are ready for the excit-ing year ahead. I am sure your children are excited about re-connecting with their peers, getting to know their new teachers and getting stuck into learning for 2020. I have really enjoyed getting into the classrooms these past two weeks. It has been fabulous to see students already engaged in rich learning tasks. When your students arrive home after school do you spend time talking about their day and what they did at school? When talking to your children after school the trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Support your children to move away from saying "fine" and "nothing" by asking your kids to de-scribe their world. It's also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Why not have a go at one of these conversation starters.
Parent Information Afternoon Parent Information Afternoon will be held on Tuesday 11 February 2020. We will be holding two ses-sions in every classroom. The first session starts at 3:15pm and will run until 3:45pm and the sec-ond session will run from 4.00pm until 4.30pm. This is a chance to: Meet your child’s teacher Listen to how they will run their classroom Discuss classroom rules, routines and behaviour expectations Learn about the curriculum your students will be learning in 2020 and Ask any questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you to these informative sessions. Swimming Swimming started last week for students in Years 1 – 6. All students need a signed permission form to be able to attend swimming this year. If you have not already returned your child’s permission note please do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions about this, please ring the office and ask to speak with Mrs Robb.
Reading Army
We will once again be calling on volunteers to be part of the Geebung State School Reading Army.
The Reading Army supports students to engage in regular 1:1 reading opportunities during the
school day. If you are interested in being part of the Reading Army this year, please email me
([email protected]) with your available days and times, even an hour makes a difference. All vol-
unteers must complete our Volunteer Induction with Mr Meharg or myself. Sessions will be running
Monday and Thursday, Week 3 at 9am and 2:30pm in the library. Also on Tuesday 18 February
2020 at 9am.

Medication
Does your child require medication during school hours?
The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. para-
cetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools
are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, op-
tometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-
counter.
Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware
of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of
the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is hav-
ing adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.
If your child requires medication while at school, please ensure you complete and sign an Administration of
medication record sheet available from the school’s office or download from our website.
You will also need to provide the school with the prescription – labelled medication in the original packaging
with clear directions for its use.
For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation
has been received.
Monday Munchkins Playgroup
Our Playgroup is community run and caters for children from birth to 5 years. We organize a range of activi-ties to suit the children’s developmental levels. Crafts, music, morning tea, age appropriate toys, sensory ses-sions are some of the activities we provide. Come along Monday's at 930-11.30am for a free trial.

Dear Parents and Carers Online Japanese class, NONAKA SENSEI's JAPANESE CLASS 2020 is open on the Learning Place (https://learningplace.education.qld.gov.au/) now! This site is a safe learning platform created by Queensland Government. Your child can:
Prepare Japanese lessons in advance
Review Japanese lessons after the class
Catch up Japanese lessons if your child missed or are new to the school
Learn basic conversations with animation
Enjoy origami with video instructions
Learn Japanese scripts and symbols with SCRATCH games, flashcards, etc.
Ask questions to Sensei
Do his/her homework! Your child is encouraged to access the Learning Place (https://learningplace.education.qld.gov.au/) for five minutes a day (at least). The more your child exposes him/herself to Japanese learning opportuni-ties, the more confidence your child can have! I have noticed that the students who often access the web-site last year showed a tendency to have higher achievements . That is why I would like to encourage your child to access the online course. The procedure: Go to the Learning Place (https://learningplace.education.qld.gov.au/) Click on eLearn (Blackboard) 1. Enter your username and password of when your child access the school computers.
2. Click on Nonaka Sensei's Japanese Class 2020.

Welcome Back!
Welcome back to school to all of our wonderful Geebung State School athletes and their families. I also
extend a very warm welcome to our new Geebung families. 2020 is gearing up to be an exciting and busy
year. I can’t wait to get started!
Term 1 Physical Education Program
This term Prep will be learning about movement through play and simple games. Students will engage in a
variety of activities that focus on developing movement concepts (space and body awareness, qualities of
movement and relationships), fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, skipping, galloping) rules
and safety (stopping on a signal and moving safely) and applying these skills in movement challenges.
Years 1 – 6 will be engaged in a swimming and water safety program. Students will learn to be safe in and
around water. Students will learn basic swimming strokes, personal survival techniques and basic rescues.
Students will need (CLEARLY NAMED):
Swimmers (one piece for girls, preferably speedos, football shorts or skins for boys)
Rash Shirt or t-shirt
Swimming Cap
Towel
Swimming Bag
Goggles are optional
HELP REQUIRED - I am grateful to any parents/ carers who feel they can volunteer in the pool during our
Swimming Program. Please contact the office to complete the Geebung State School Volunteer Induction.
The next induction will take place on Monday 10 February 2020 or Thursday 13 February 2020 at 9:30am
or 2:30pm. Also Tuesday 18 February 2020 at 9am.

Well done to all of our Geebung State School athletes who swam their way through our (extremely hot!)
Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals in term 4, 2019. I loved seeing the steely determination, team effort
and fabulous smiles on display from all of our students across the two days.
Thank you to all of the wonderful parents, grandparents and carers who attended the events and cheered
so well.
A special thank you to the fabulous Geebung State School Swimming Club for supporting our event and to
our beautiful staff who worked so very hard. A special thank you to Mrs Anderson and our amazing year 6
students who demonstrated such terrific leadership skills at the Junior Sports Carnival. You should all be
very proud.

All three houses were supported beautifully by the junior school who accumulated points by demonstrating
outstanding sportsmanship skills.
Congratulations to our age champions who demonstrated a high level of consistency across all 50m age

Bramble Bay Sport Trials
Throughout the year there will be district trials for a variety of sports for students born in 2008, 2009 and
2010. Thank you to those families who returned the expression of interest form for their child. Students will
be informed of when trials will be held. Students MUST have very good skills in the particular sport they
wish to trial in. There is a nomination fee of $12 to attend any Bramble Bay trial. Students MUST also take
the required forms to the trials.
NO FORMS – NO PAYMENT – NO TRIAL
Nominations will be submitted to the relevant sport manager by Mrs Robb.

Running Club is off and racing! We meet every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:00am – 8:40am.
Running Club is open to children of all fitness levels aged 8 and older.
Please ensure your child has returned their Activity Consent Form before attending any running club ses-
sions.

This year we are inviting our running club parents to actively participate whilst your children are training.
You don’t have to run - walking is a-ok! Why not bring along your sandshoes and accumulate some steps
before the day starts? You might like to grab a gang of Geebung Mums and Dads and have a chat as you
go?

Junior Footy (Years 1 and 2)
This term, as part of our ongoing commitment to offering quality extra-curricular activities to the students of
Geebung State School, we will be running a before school AFL program for students in years 1 and 2.
Each session will incorporate skill activities, minor games and modified matches in a fun and safe environ-
ment. The weekly program will be coordinated by Mrs Robb (Foundation Coach - Youth) to ensure a quality
experience for all participants.
We hope all participants experience personal achievement in terms of competence, enhanced self-esteem,
social cooperation and skill development in a fun environment.
Junior Footy will run for 7 weeks from Friday 13th February – Friday 9th April 2020 from 8:00am – 8:40am at
no cost to families.
Please ensure your child has returned their Activity Consent Form before attending any Junior Footy ses-
sions.
AFL Schools Cup (Years 5 – 6)
I am very excited to announce that in 2020, Geebung State School will be participating in the AFL School’s
Cup! We have nominated to enter a senior boys team and a senior girls team. Students will be selected
from years 5 and 6.
Students will be participating in an interschool carnival competition at Zillmere Football Club on Wednesday
27th May 2020. In preparation for the carnival, we will be holding weekly training sessions during Thursday
lunch time run by Mrs Robb and experienced coaches from AFLQ.
Please return your Activity Consent Form as soon as possible if you would like your child to participate in the
AFL Schools Cup event. This will be sent home next week.

Hi and welcome back to another exciting year. I trust that you and your family had a nice break.
I would like to offer a warm welcome to those student & families new to the Geebung State School
community.
I have attached an article from kids matter with some ideas that may be helpful in settling children
into school.
Helping your child settle in
Many children experience some anxiety during the transition to school but in most cases it dissipates in the
first few weeks of term. Here, clinical psychologist Dr Celeste Merrigan looks at how parents and carers can
help their child adjust to the school day routine and shows you who to talk to for extra support.
Making a positive start to school is important for children. There is good evidence that a child’s readiness
for school and a positive transition has a very positive flow-on effect to positive adjustment in the school
setting and positives in their academic and social development.
It’s equally important to note that many children may feel some anxiety or challenge initially – this is normal
and in most instances these challenges will dissipate in the first few weeks. Educators are very skilled at
supporting young children and their parents at this time. So if a parent has any concerns, I recommend talk-
ing about it with your child’s teacher – they will reassure, guide or direct you to an appropriate source of
help.
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting children starting school. Children constantly look to
their parents as their guide in regard to any new experience. So it is important that parents exhibit a calm,
positive and matter-of fact response when a child is starting school. Children are sensitive to their parents’
anxieties, so even though it is normal for a parent to be a little anxious, try to keep this in check, otherwise it
can create unnecessary anxiety for a child.
Many parents worry that their child will not be able to cope in a larger playground or eat lunch without
prompting. Others are concerned the jump to school and long days will be tiring and that they are handing
their children into the care of others.

Remember that going to school is an important life experience filled with opportunities for growth, skill devel-opment and fun. Like any new experience there are challenges for both the child and the parents. Schools support children to cope with the playground, ensuring they are safe and they enjoy their snack and lunch. Many schools have modified timetables and practices to assist children to gain confidence and independ-ence in the social aspects of school. Parents and carers often have competing emotions at this time – joy that their child has reached the mile-stone of school entry, but maybe also a little sadness or anxiety as they have less time with their child. These feelings pass quickly for most people as they see their child adjusting and they experience time to-gether after school, on weekends and during holidays. It can be helpful to share these feelings with others and you may then realise they are very normal. If nega-tive feelings persist, speak with a trusted friend and perhaps your GP and they can help you decide if it would be helpful to speak with a mental health professional. Here are my top tips for parents and carers to help children enjoy the first week of school: Embrace the change as it’s an exciting and very positive step for your child and the whole family. Be matter-of-fact, calm and reassuring. Try not to talk about school too much as it can create anticipatory anxiety. If the subject comes up incidentally, be positive about it. Relax – there is nothing that can’t be managed. It’s okay if a problem occurs. In fact, it’s an opportunity to practice problem solving techniques. Below are a few other ideas that may assist your child the first few weeks at school: Try to drop off your child at school before the bell goes in the morning. Also pick your child up on
time. If you’re late it could make your child feel very anxious. Consider limiting after-school activities like swimming lessons for the first term, and stick to a bedtime
routine if you can. Your child is likely to be very tired after school for the first few weeks. Try to make after-school time a bit special, with a snack and time for the two of you to chat. Be patient if your child wants to blurt out every little detail about school, or clams up completely. Try to
respect your child’s response to this new experience. Try to be flexible with snacks and meals. Your child will probably be very hungry after school. He might
want to snack after school and miss normal dinner. Don’t expect too much too soon. If your child is happy and seems to be enjoying school, that’s a real
achievement. The rest will come later. When you feel your child is coping all right with after-school tiredness, think about setting up a play
date with one of her new classmates. This helps to strengthen the links between school and home. If your child doesn’t seem to be settling well, speak to your child’s classroom teacher. Welcome to the Library News for 2020! Geebung State School library has an interesting range of books for students to choose from, reaching across the worlds of information, novels, chapter books, jokes, poetry, art and picture books. We will help your child to find something exciting to read and introduce them to a range of authors, writing styles and information texts from historical to weird and wonderful! Classes have an allocated borrowing time each week but students can change their books before school, af-ter school and at big lunch if they are ready for something new or different. Preps to year 3 will need a library bag to keep their books safe and dry. It is a good idea to find a special place at home to put your library books so that they can be found easily on library day. It is great if parents can share the books with their chil-dren at home and encourage a love of reading at any age. Library times: 8.30am – 8.45am borrowing books/homework 1.15 pm – 1.40pm borrowing/ sharing books/ chess/computers/drawing/homework/writing 3.00pm – 3.15pm borrowing books We look forward to seeing you and your child during the term, especially the new families at Geebung State School this year. What is the P&C? The Geebung State School P&C Association is made up of a group of parents, grandparents and community members that are committed to helping provide the best education possible for all the students that attend Geebung State School. Geebung State School P&C run a variety of services: Outside School Hours Care, Tuckshop, Uniform Shop and Swim-ming Club. If you have any questions about these services, please contact the P&C office. P&C meetings are the second Tuesday of the month during school terms. Everyone is welcome to join us; they are a great source of information from the school administration and a great way to help our school community. We’d love to see you! Our first meeting for 2020 will follow the AGM on Tuesday 11th February 2020 at 7pm in the library. At the AGM, all executive positions will be made vacant, then nominations and voting will take place for a new execu-tive committee. All executive positions are not paid. If anyone is interested in becoming an executive member in the P&C this year, please forward any queries or interest to [email protected]. UNIFORM SHOP
Geebung State School has a smart, stylish and affordable school uniform which creates an identity for our
school. It also teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance.
UNIFORM SHOP HOURS: The uniform shop is fully stocked and open Wednesdays from 8.15am to
9.15am. However, if you cannot make it in Wednesday mornings, please just contact me and I'm sure
we can come to some arrangement.
Aside from new uniforms, the shop also stocks second-hand uniforms, hats, hair accessories, swimming caps
and sport’s house shirts. Please, pop in and check out our selection.
UNIFORM GUIDELINES are available from the school's office or on the school's webpage. Please read these
documents to familiarise yourself with the school's policy. Also, please remember to wear the formal uniform
on Tuesdays (Assembly Day).

P&C News
TUCKSHOP
Tuckshop has had a long-awaited upgrade during the Christmas break. Thank you to our schools P&C for applying and winning a grant to pay for the upgrade. We have installed a new commercial oven and dishwasher, induction cooktop and stainless-steel work benches and shelving. All these improvements will help Tuckshop run more efficiently and they will help make the valuble work that our volunteers do, easier.
We are always looking for volunteers to help, I cannot do it alone. If each family helped one day every month we would have it covered. We are hoping that with the growth of the school and more student & families using Tuckshop that we may need to employ another part-time staff member. Our first choice to fill this paid position would be for a regular and reliable volunteer.
For working families that would also like to help, Tuckshop is happy to accept donations of regularly used non-perishable food items. Ordering lunch can be done online at quickcliq.com.au or by the brown paper bag method and handed into tuckshop before 9am. Please note a separate bag for each break is required. We have bags at tuckshop for 10c each or you can use a bag from home. Tuckshop is open Wednesday, Thursday & Friday each week from 8am. Welcome to 2020 and what a start to the season. We kicked off Term 1 on Friday 31st January with an ex-
cellent turnout. And great support for the canteen by our members once again. Lots of progress over the
break on technology with our new TV and enclosure installed and tested this week. It will get its first use
this Friday night and then again at The Mole Invitational Carnival this weekend on Saturday the 8th February
2020.

The Salvation Army at Taigum is running the triple P parenting course with free child minding and free dinner! It’s starts Tuesday March 10th from 6pm - 8pm. And runs over 4 Tuesday nights (March 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st).
Please note that the child minding will have a Christian element to it.
