RAISING CHILDREN

http://www.raisingchildren.net.au/

The above website has a wealth of information including tipsand tricks on the sometimes difficult task of raising children. Iurge all parents to take some time to look at the informationprovided. The information below is taken directly from the“Behaviour management for your child” section.

1. Keep an update schedule – this can be done byusing various apps on phones or calendars

2. Work ahead –ensuring that as a parent continue totalk to the classroom teacher or administration onyour child’s progress, homework, assessmentrequirements, extra-curricular requirements etc.

3. Ensure your child is getting a good night’s sleep, eating healthy meals and exercising

4. Prioritise what is important when it comes to schoolwork, again checking in with your classroom teacher

5. Make time to relax and have fun with your student

• Set aside a regular time for reading to your childrenevery day

• Surround your children with reading materials

• Have a family reading time

• Encourage a wide variety of reading activities

• Develop the library habit

• Be knowledgeable about your child’s progress

• Look for reading problems

• Get help promptly for reading problems – by seekingsupport from the classroom teacher

• Use variety of aids to help your child readings

• Show enthusiasm for your child’s reading

Children’s behaviour – it can delight, stun, confuse, frustrate oreven anger you. When your child behaves in challenging ways,it’s good to have a range of behaviour management options.

About behaviour management

Behaviour management is about guiding your child’s behaviourso that she learns the appropriate way to behave.

A positive and constructive approach is often the best wayto guide your child’s behaviour. This means giving your childattention when he behaves well, rather than just punishing himwhen he does something you don’t like.

But it’s normal for children to behave in challenging ways atdifferent stages and in particular situations. So trying tounderstand your child’s behaviour is an important step inmanaging it. This way you can choose a reliable behaviourmanagement option that’s well matched to the causes of yourchild’s behaviour.

And if you use behaviour management strategies at the sametime as you nurture strong family relationships, you’re well onyour way to helping your child learn about appropriatebehaviour.

Understanding: the first step to child behaviourmanagement

Dealing with children’s behaviour is one of the most challengingaspects of parenting.

Understanding the causes of your child’s behaviour is the firststep in meeting this challenge. So before you choose behaviourmanagement options, it’s a good idea to check a few things.

First, if your child’s behaviour changes suddenly, checkwhether your child is healthy and getting enough sleep.Sometimes challenging behaviour is the first sign that childrenaren’t well. If you’re not sure, take your child to the doctor orchild and family health nurse for a check-up.

Next think about your child’s development. It’s good to keepin mind that different kinds of challenging behaviour are normalat different stages of development. For example, tantrums arevery common in toddlers and preschoolers, because at this agechildren have big feelings and not enough words to expressthem.

Third, consider whether there have been any changes in yourfamily life that might affect your child’s behaviour. For example,it’s normal to see challenging behaviour after the birth of a newbaby, starting school or a death in the family.

Understanding the developmental reasons and emotionsbehind your child’s behaviour doesn’t mean you can ignorechallenging behaviour, but it does help you work out how torespond. Also, knowing what’s typical at different stages and indifferent circumstances helps you know whether you need extrahelp with your child’s behaviour.

Word Inquiry: helping your children with spelling.Part 6

When children struggle to spell or read a word, an automaticresponse is often to suggest ‘sound it out’. When this doesn’twork, it can be frustrating for both the teacher and the student.Children need to build an understanding of how English wordsare built.

Words have stories.

Just as we use words to write stories, so do words have theirown stories? Investigating how a word came into our languagetells us why it is spelled the way it is. Have you ever wonderedabout why there is a <k> in words like knight? Well in OldEnglish the <k> was pronounced with the <n>: /kn/.

Gradually pronunciation changed but the spelling remained, notonly as a nod to history, but so it is easy to tell whether youmean knight or night, not or knot, no or know or even nit orknit. We all love hearing stories so find some stories to tell yourchildren about our words.

1C News

We started off our week with much excitement! 1C wasawarded the “cleaners trophy” for week 5. 1C have beenworking very hard to keep the classroom neat and tidy. 1Calso received a silver award for attendance. It was great tosee everyone in 1C at school. 1C will now go in the drawfor an end of term pizza party. We have our fingers crossedthat we will have many more days of 100% attendance beforethe end of the term. Many students have reached 700 dojopoints and enjoyed lunch with an adult of their choice. Weare amazed at our how well our class garden has grown.1C students are still very keen to water the garden, and thesearch for snow peas and strawberries happens daily. 1C havebeen busy learning about stories from the Dreamtime and havebeen retelling them through illustrations, orally and in writing. Ihave been amazed at the great use of describing words andinteresting verbs used in retells. 1C recorded the daily weatherfor a few weeks and discovered how the day sky can change. After a few nights of star gazing, it was discovered that the nightsky changes as well. 1C are now looking at the different typesof landscapes and the features of them. In the next few weeks,1C will be making a day time sky and landscape diorama. The mathematicians in 1C have discovered the concept oftime, o’clock and half past, making 2 digit numbers lots ofdifferent ways and what would be the best object for measuringcapacity. A lot of counting was involved when we made our 100bead strings.
