Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, students and of course our special guests. It is very pleasing to have so many special guests here tonight, including my Primary colleague Casey Constantine. In particular could I please acknowledge Phillip Thompson OAM the Federal Member for Herbert, Scott Stewart MP the member for Townsville and Councillor Colleen Doyle? As the night progresses could I please ask you all to listen to the many places that our special guests come from, and the support that they give our school. GHD, James Cook University, Central Queensland University, Glencore, Lowes, Heron Todd White, AusIMM, TAFE, the Defence Forces to name just a few. What an amazing year our school community has had in 2019. As I was reflecting on the year so that I could write this speech, my first thoughts were of the floods that happened right at the start of the year. The school had some relatively small amounts of damage, and no power for eight days, but some students and staff had their homes devastated. What I then saw was an amazing sense of community as people rallied together to overcome adversity. Our school community played its part – parents providing stationery and uniforms to those in need (sometimes when they couldn’t really afford it themselves), students helping Oonoonba State School clean up. I have to tell you that I could not have been more proud of the efforts of the entire Townsville State High community through this trying time. And then life went on. Our Year 11s began the new Senior Secondary Curriculum working towards their QCE. Next year some of them will achieve an ATAR, as our current Year 12s are the last to receive an OP. Learning in lessons happened, sporting and cultural opportunities happened. We had amazing positives. In 2016 standing in this very spot I asked the politicians and Regional Office representatives for money to upgrade our school hall. (They don’t know it yet, but I’m going to ask them for more money in a few minutes). This year we saw the outcome of that 2016 request, and the advocacy of our P&C. Our Hall now looks like new. It has big fans and doesn’t have the mess from critters because they can’t get in any more. I would like to thank Scott Stewart for his support in making the funding happen. The Hall made for a wonderful location for another big positive for our school – we hosted a community breakfast with the Premier of Queensland and the Minister for Education. I was so very pleased to be able to do that. We managed to have more than 100 students who got the opportunity to create a memory that not everybody gets by meeting those high-ranking politicians. We were then very fortunate to have the Premier invite the seven students who performed to come and be part of the event she hosted to celebrate the Regional Parliament. More memories for some of our students. So now Politicians – the part you’ve been waiting for where I ask you for money. (Scott, you already know about this) I would like to put a large security fence right around the school. Here’s why. Townsville is getting close to opening the new Stadium. Our school is already going to benefit from it. We are working with Townsville City Council to access some of the treated water that will be piped to the new stadium to water our school oval. right thing. Some may celebrate too hard, or be terribly upset bya loss (I know that we never plan for the Cowboys to lose, butit happens sometimes), and the result can be some damage tosurrounding buildings. I’m concerned for our school. We’re verylucky that our school suffers very little vandalism compared toother places – and I have been told so far that’s the reason wecan’t get a fence. We don’t have enough damage yet. So whatI’m asking is for some help to find a way to be proactive andto protect our school before the damage happens. Please helpus avoid the situation where students are arriving to smashedwindows or where the buildings have been used as urinals.Please.

*At this point I ad-libbed and asked for a new STEM centre also

Anyway, back to more pleasant things. Most people in theroom would be aware of the strength of our Science programs.During the September holidays three of our staff, and two ofour students were given the opportunity to travel to Papua NewGuinea as part of the PNGAus Partnership Program. We willbe going back next year too, and they will send teachers andstudents here. We get to share the wonderful things we do inour school with an international audience. It is great recognitionof what we do here to be chosen for this opportunity.

I have always had reasons to be proud of the community wehave here at Townsville State High School. There are so manythings that set this school apart from others. The intangible, immeasurable things that build this community and sense ofbelonging. Our students involve themselves in activities like Hitthe Hill, Relay for Life, Shave for a Cure, NAIDOC Celebrations,Harmony Day, RUOK Day, they raise money for charities – butthere is something more here. There is a “Town High Spirit”or something that I can’t quite define. Visitors to our schoolmention it, the “feel” of the school. Suddenly I feel like I’m thatlawyer in the movie the Castle – it’s the vibe of it… I will tellanyone who will listen that this is the best school in Townsville. We get good results, yes, but our great school has studentsthat achieve so much more than that.

I’d like to congratulate all of the students who are honouredtonight. I hope that by being recognised in front of your peers, teachers, parents and community, you are inspired to continueyour efforts!

I acknowledge our Year 12 students who finish their schoolingin a couple of weeks. There are more speeches to come then, but for tonight let it suffice to say that I wish you every successin your future endeavours.

Finally I have chosen a quote to finish with. Lou Fosterspecifically asked me to include one this year, I’m not surewhy she asked because I always do, it wouldn’t be one of myspeeches without a quote. Since I’ve mentioned the strengthof our community quite a lot, and working towards the greatergood is something that I strongly believe in, this is the quotethat I’ve chosen. It is from Albert Einstein:

One should guard against preaching to young people thatsuccess in the customary form is the main aim in life. The mostimportant motive for work in school and in life is pleasure inwork, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value ofthe result to the community.

Ladies and gentlemen, thanks for being here and enjoy the restof the evening.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

From 1 January 2015, the Australian Government requires allstudents studying Vocational Education and Training (VET) tohave a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes studentswho are studying VET in schools. Townsville State High Schoolmust have a valid USI for a student before issuing a qualificationor statement of attainment.

What is a USI?

From 2015, anyone undertaking a Vocational Education andTraining course (eg: through TAFE or other training providers, but not University) will need to have a "Unique StudentIdentifier" (USI) - this is a bit like an account number made up ofletters and numbers and is allocated to you. It is used to identifyyou when undertaking any vocational training.

This USI allows you to login to your training account and seeall your training records and the results of all your courses. Youcan also print out all your results to take to an employer whenyou are applying for a job or to any training provider when youare doing any additional courses.

You should have this Unique Student Identifier before you cancommence any courses and must have it to obtain yourcertification or statement of attainment. If you don't alreadyhave one, you can create one at:

http://www.usi.gov.au/

At Townsville SHS we will be assisting students with theapplication for their USI. Students’ must provide suitableidentification through one of the following:

Each learner at Townsville State High School will either berequired to provide their existing USI (if not already on recordat the RTO) or apply for a USI. Students can access the USIFact Sheets from the school’s web page and also the school’scurriculum network.

Each student who enrols in a VET course will need to completethe following:

Action 1. The student applies for a USI at home

Action 2. The student applies for a USI at the school

• Driver’s licence

• Medicare card

• Birth Certificate (Australian) — please note a birthcertificate extract is not sufficient

• Australian Passport

• Visa (with Non-Australian Passport) for internationalstudents

• Certificate Of Registration By Descent

• Citizenship Certificate

• ImmiCard

• The school sends home information about the USIand what the process will be for application andprovision through Newsletters and Parent Informationletters

• Students obtain a USI at home via the websitewww.usi.gov.au

• The student provides the USI to the school using theUSI Collection and Verification form

Parades were held on the oval.

And the uniforms were green and white.

How do we know these snippets of our history? Late last term,we had a special visit from her Excellency Natasha Smith, theAustralian High Commissioner to Canada. She also happens tobe an ex-school captain (1989). Ms Smith joined us at paradewhere she shared memories of her time at Town High. Thiswas followed by a presentation where Ms Smith shared her
