From the Principal … Welcome to Week 10 where everyone is looking forward to the holidays and a chance to recharge in preparation for the second half of the school year. This week we are holding parent-teacher interviews. Thank you to the parents who have already attended our parent/teacher interviews, as well as those parents who will be attending over the next 3 days. This is a great opportunity to discuss the strengths your child has demonstrated and any areas for future development. Please be aware of the interview time you have been allocated. It is important that parents arrive on time. If you arrive late, teachers will not be able to squeeze you in as it then impacts on the parents following, resulting in interviews running late. Late arrivals may need to be booked in for another day and time. If you are unable to make your interview time please contact the front office as soon as possible to avoid teachers waiting unnecessarily. This week sees two of our staff members finish their time at Governor. This Friday we say farewell to Ms Halabe after 29 years at Governor Philip King. Ms Halabe has made outstanding contributions to our school as the librarian and as an Assistant Principal. Yesterday our staff held a Madhatters Morning Tea to celebrate Ms Halabe’s time here at Governor. We wish her all the best as she retires and spends time with her family and beginning a new adventure. Miss Sami also leaves Governor at the end of this week after 19 years of teaching at our school. Miss Sami has taken a service transfer to a new school at the commencement of next term. We wish her all the best in the next phase of her career. Last week I had the pleasure of hosting this terms SRL Morning Tea. It is always wonderful to see our amazing students who continue to be great representatives of our school at all times. These students were then presented with their SRL certificates at our whole School Assembly. A huge thank you to Mrs Demiris who sent in some amazing cupcakes for our morning tea. Eva and her mum even decorated the cupcakes with our jigsaw puzzle pieces. They were amazing! Week 10 Term 2 2 July 2019

Welcome to Week 10 where everyone is looking forward to the holidays and a chance to recharge in preparation for the second

half of the school year.

strengths your child has demonstrated and any areas for future development. Please be aware of the interview time you have

waiting unnecessarily.

This week sees two of our staff members finish their time at Governor. This Friday we say farewell to Ms Halabe after 29

years at Governor Philip King. Ms Halabe has made outstanding contributions to our school as the librarian and as an Assistant

Principal. Yesterday our staff held a Madhatters Morning Tea to celebrate Ms Halabe’s time here at Governor. We wish her all

the best as she retires and spends time with her family and beginning a new adventure.

Miss Sami also leaves Governor at the end of this week after 19 years of teaching at our school. Miss Sami has taken a service

transfer to a new school at the commencement of next term. We wish her all the best in the next phase of her career.

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting this terms SRL Morning Tea. It is always wonderful to see our amazing students who

continue to be great representatives of our school at all times. These students were then presented with their SRL certificates

at our whole School Assembly. A huge thank you to Mrs Demiris who sent in some amazing cupcakes for our morning tea. Eva and

Week 10 Term 2

2 July 2019

During our whole School Assembly last week it was wonderful to see Mrs Power and Ms Halabe presented with their

Retirement Medals. Our Director, Education Leadership Ms Siokos presented both staff members with their Medals and

spoke about their contributions to both Public Education and our school. Congratulations to both Mrs Power and Ms Halabe

on amazing careers.

Thank you to Mr Sabato who, after reading the newsletter about losing our mandarins from the fruit trees, sent in bags of

mandarins from his own trees at home for our Stage 2 students to enjoy. It was such a very kind gesture and greatly

appreciated!

I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved rest over the holidays. As always I ask our students to be safe and smart during the

break. I challenge our students to pick up some books to read and enjoy as well as do some family activities that broaden

their knowledge and experiences. Please remember all student K-6 return to school on Tuesday 23 July.

Deputy Principal’s Message …

It is hard to believe that we have arrived at the halfway point of 2019. It certainly has been a busy term for members of

the GPK community.

Please remember that Parent-Teacher interviews have commenced and will go through until Thursday. We seek your

assistance that you arrive on time, appreciate that teachers have numerous interviews on the day and must adhere to the

15-minute allocation. If for any reason you are unable to attend the meeting, please have the courtesy to contact the office

so the teacher can be informed.

PSSA has finished for this term. It commences again in Term 3 on Friday 26 July. Training for Football and Y5/Y6 Netball

will commence on the first Tuesday back.

Activate Inclusive Sports Day

On Wednesday 26 June, five students travelled to Homebush to participate in the Activate Inclusive Sports Day. William

5KS, Zeyad 4IE, Meme and Sabinus 2ZL and Evan 3DY were the students who attended. It was a great day which included

tennis, netball, rugby league, soccer and wheelchair basketball.

“My favourite sport was the tennis where we got to verse each other.” (William 5KS)

“My favourite sport was the wheelchair basketball because I learnt how to use a wheelchair. I had fun dancing in the chair

too.” (Zeyad 4IE)

On Monday, the GPK staff held a morning recess to farewell two of our teachers. Ms Halabe retires after 46 years, 29 of

those at Governor. Ms Sami is moving on after 19 years to a new school after receiving a service transfer. We wish both of

them all the best in their next chapter.

We thank them for the contributions they have made to GPK during their time. You will be missed. We look forward to

hearing about their new experiences. Thank you to all the teachers and staff who helped set up the staffroom for the

morning tea, a great job.

Stage 2 Zoo Reminder

When we return in Term 3, Years 3 and 4 are straight into it. The whole stage will be having a theme day on Tuesday 23

July. The students may wear mufti and there will be a sausage sizzle provided at no charge. Students who do not wish to

have the lunch provided will need to bring their lunch.

Proceeding this day, those students who are off to the Zoo will leave in the afternoon. They need to make sure that they

bring all that is needed. Suitcases, sleeping bags and backpacks will be placed in classrooms in the morning.

NAIDOC Week

Due to NAIDOC Week falling in the term break, classes at GPK will be celebrating this week. NAIDOC Week celebrations

are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life. The

week is a great opportunity for students at GPK to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander community.

Hopefully when we come back in Term 3, NSW will be State of Origin Champions and Australia will have been victorious in

the Cricket World Cup.

Wishing all of our students and teachers a great holiday break. You have certainly deserved this one. Have a safe and

enjoyable holiday.

See you text term.

Values Education - The value for Week 10 is Consideration. Consideration is being aware of feelings, likes, dislikes and

needs of others and adjusting our manners and actions so as not to hurt or offend others. We all need to practice

consideration all the time. Students are taught to be considerate of others when walking around the school, when doing

work in class and when playing outside. Please encourage your child/children to practice consideration at home as well.

Goodbye from Ms Halabe

As you all know, this week is my last week at Governor Philip King. I have mixed feelings as I approach my

retirement. My teaching career has spanned 46 years at different schools in Sydney, but I have been blessed to

have worked at this wonderful school for 29 years. On Friday afternoon, I will be saying good bye not only to

colleagues but friends, both from the teaching staff and the parent community. During these years I have meet

some wonderful parents who I will never forget. I thank you for your time, your support and your help over the

years, and hope you continue helping the school whenever possible.

It has been wonderful to be able to get to know you and be able to teach the wonderful students who have

attended our school. I wish you all good health and happiness in all your future ventures.

Ms Jemeli Halabe
