AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL From the Principal During the past two weeks, it has been lovely to have all of the children back at school again and almost back to normal. Whilst we are maintaining all the Covid-19 requirements of the Department of Education in regard to hygiene, cleaning and social distancing, learning and teaching is now back to being our key focus. The children have all made a very pleasing transition back to school but there is still much to be achieved this term. This week is National Volunteers’ Week in WA and today is also P&C Day WA. As such it is an opportune time to acknowledge the incredible work of the many volunteers who normally contribute their time and effort to our school and to the P&C. At the moment, things are a little different, however, each year, we are most fortunate to have a large group of parents and grandparents who are actively involved in their children’s school and education as volunteers. This involvement is seen in a wide range of activities including – assisting in the library, helping in the classroom, working on committees, organising and helping with fundraising, coordinating the book club, making things for the school, assisting in the canteen, representing parents on the School Board and P&C, assisting with sporting events, organising school uniforms, providing transportation, assisting on excursions and many more. Each one of these contributions is equally important to fostering a supportive school community, which is greatly valued and appreciated by the staff and the children of our school. It certainly makes an enormous difference and makes our school quite special and unique. Our P&C volunteers have contributed to our school for many years and continue to provide the children and staff with amazing resources. We thank them all sincerely for the tremendous work that they do and for the funds that they have raised over the years. Once again many thanks to all our volunteers for the wonderful contribution that you make to our school. The Annual School Report 2019 has been completed and is available from Administration or on the School Website. This Report provides information about the school’s performance, achievements and celebrations during 2019. Congratulations and thank you to all parents and students who support our school dress code by wearing our wonderful school uniform every day. This plays an important role in promoting a positive image of the school and maintaining our school culture. windcheaters, track suits and dark green trousers and school hats. Dark green scarves and leggings can also be worn during the colder months. Many visitors often comment on how well presented our students are in their school uniform. Special thanks must go to our Uniform Coordinator Seetha Karisnan, who does a tremendous job collating orders, liaising with manufacturers and assisting new families with uniform items so that new students will have them for the first day at their new school. It is important, however, to have all uniform items clearly labelled to avoid being lost, particularly items such as windcheaters and jackets which are often removed throughout the day.

Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension. Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Vocabulary refers to the words we must understand to communicate effectively. Vocabulary plays an important part in learning to read. Beginning readers must use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print. Children who hear more words spoken at home learn more words and will enter school with a wider vocabulary. Vocabulary is key to reading comprehension. Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. As children learn to read more advanced texts, they must learn the meaning of new words that are not part of their oral vocabulary. This is why it is important that when children bring home their weekly spelling words, they must not only practise how to spell the word, they must fully understand the meaning of the word. Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Children learn word meanings indirectly in three ways:

They engage daily in oral language

They listen to adults read to them

They read extensively on their own

Vocabulary at Home

Talking to and reading with your child are two terrific ways to help them hear and read new words. Conversations and questions about interesting words ("The book says, 'The boy tumbled down the hill,' and look at the picture! How do you think he went down the hill?") are easy, non-threatening ways to get new words into everyday talk. Sharing a new word with your child doesn't have to take a long time: just a few minutes to talk about the word and then focus back on the book or conversation. A good way to develop your child’s vocabulary is to keep a record book of new words learnt You can then refer back to these words in the future. Take the time to share new words and build your child's vocabulary. You'll be enormously glad you did!

Financial support provided by parents has always played an important role in the provision of resources and the school’s capacity to add value to children’s learning experiences. For example, parent voluntary contributions assist schools to provide resources for all classes and can include items such as reading books, puzzles and blocks for the littles ones, maths equipment, paint and craft supplies, dictionaries, at-lases, iPad, maths and sports equipment. Each year the School Board sets the contribution amount and for 2020 the schedule is:

Thank you to the many parents who have already paid their school contributions this year. It makes a significant difference and is greatly appreciated.

May is the national cystic fibrosis (CF) awareness month, and Friday 22 May is 65 Roses Day.

On 65 Roses Day, CF would usually paint Western Australia with beautiful fresh roses to raise funds and awareness for people living with CF. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, selling roses in the CBD and at shopping centres, schools and workplaces is not possible this year.

That’s why 65 Roses is going digital with a new virtual 65 Roses Garden! Visit www.rosegarden.org.au to send a rose to someone you care about this May. Your donation will help us continue to provide essential support services and support critical research funding for people living with CF in WA.

Wattle Grove Primary School Kindergarten student, Charlotte, lives with CF and is hoping to raise lots of money to support CF as they continue to provide support for those with CF. Virtual roses can be purchased via www.rosegarden.org.au with TEAM CHARLOTTE as the fundraising group name.

Room 33’s Demountable Classroom arrived. The students enjoyed watching the trucks unload their new room.

OsmanOsmanOsmanOsman Hello my name is Osman and I am in Room 11 with Mrs Lowther. I have attended Wattle Grove Primary School for six years. My family originally came from Eritrea and settled here long before I was born. I have three siblings, two brothers and a sister. I like to play sports, particularly soccer but I do try others. I participate in the P.A.C.E.S program as an extension to what I do at school. What I like about Wattle Grove Primary School is the quality teaching. The teachers make PowerPoints about what they are trying to teach and they are well made. The respectful students also are well-behaved and academically capable of amazing things. The events that the school runs are always a great experience and well handled. As a Student Representative, I want to develop myself so I can become a better public speaker and to organise something for others to do. I want to become the best that I can be so younger kids can look up to me. I am willing to help people behind on a subject and in the playground.

Ava Ava Ava Ava Hi, my name is Ava. I am currently in Room 11 with Mrs Lowther. I have attended this school ever since Kindy. I was born in Australia and have never lived in another country in my life. I have two siblings, one sister and one brother. In my free time, I enjoy playing on my tablet, painting with my mum, dancing on the weekends and I also do tennis lessons. This is an amazing school and I enjoy it because every day I get challenged with a new activity or task. The staff and parent helpers are extremely friendly and are always there to support you in your time of need. I enjoy school most of all because there are loads of fun events that happen, like sports carnivals and free dress-up days. I am looking forward to becoming a Student Representative now I’m in Year Six. This is a fabulous opportunity and I would like to help develop fundraising events, provide a strong voice for the students to bring concerns to the attention and of course serve as a positive role-model to younger students.
